5 simple rules to winter-proof your skin
Whatever your skin type, there are a few small changes you can make to adjust your skincare routine to help it adapt to the change in season.
Here are five simple steps to adopt:
1. Make simple product swaps
We don't mean a whole product overhaul. If you've already got a good grip on your skin type and are managing it, small, easy and inexpensive changes to 'winterise' your ritual is all you need. Add in a richer moisturiser or layer oil. Swap out your usual serum for a hydrating one.
2. Be intentional with ingredients
Products with lipid-layer repairing benefits will be your best friend across all seasons. Particularly in winter, look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and ceramides – all work to support your skin's barrier, retain hydration and lock in moisture.
3. Make exfoliating a habit
Perhaps it seems counterintuitive to exfoliate already tight, dry s kin, but it will result in a healthier and brighter complexion. Not only will exfoliating twice a week slough off those dead skin cells that clog the pores, it will also help your hydrating products to work better. Just stay away from harsh scrubs that can do more damage than good.
4. Make friends with retinol
The powerhouse of ingredients, retinol, is a miraculously transforming derivative of vitamin A and helps skin cell regeneration, assists in collagen production and unclogs pores, to name a few benefits. It is important to allow your skin to build up a tolerance so if you're a newbie, slowly and gently integrate it into your routine. Remember to use it only at night and always use an SPF every day, too.
5. Don't stop the SPF
Speaking of sunscreen, keep applying it religiously. Yes, even if you're not technically seeing the sun, you'll still want to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays.
