WNBA Commissioner Facing Backlash After Paige Bueckers' Decision

The WNBA draft will soon hit screens across the country, showcasing the next wave of talent to impact the league. Last season, the WNBA brought in arguably the most influential rookie class in league history, led by Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Kate Martin and Cameron Brink. Advertisement This season, a couple of the biggest stars include Paige Bueckers and Hailey Van Lith. While there's a flurry of talented prospects coming into the league, Bueckers has been the focal point. She's coming off a four-year career with the UConn Huskies, having led Geno Auriemma's team to the national title this past season. Following the national championship for Bueckers and UConn, the WNBA draft prospect made an interesting career move. Bueckers signed a three-year deal with the 3-on-3 Unrivaled League. According to Kendra Andrews at ESPN, Bueckers will be making more in a 10-week period playing for the Unrivaled league next season than the entirety of her four-year WNBA contract. Advertisement While her salary for the Unrivaled league is undisclosed, Bueckers could be making around $78,000 in her first WNBA season, if she were to be selected with the No. 1 overall pick. After Bueckers signed the lucrative deal with Unrivaled League, some fans took to social media, throwing shade at WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert. "Im starting a conspiracy that cathy is sabotaging the wnba on purpose," said one fan. "cathy needs to be far away from the wnba," said another fan. "now media people from unrivaled on the clock app talking about the lack of coverage of the draft from the wnba… cathy we won't forgive you for embarrassing us like this," mentioned one fan. Advertisement "Cathy Engelbert needs to be fired/let go! She is hurting the WNBA with the lack of publicity and promotion of the women's league! Barely any post/promotion the upcoming daft class," commented one fan. "I need cathy engelbert fired as wnba commissioner by the end of the week," said one fan. "What exactly does Cathy do for the WNBA?GENUINELY," said another fan. Some fans believe Engelbert is hurting the WNBA, mentioning that Bueckers signing with another league prior to the draft is "embarrassing."
