Three dead in wrong-way crash on I-85 in Spartanburg Co.
SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Three people were killed early Sunday morning after a driver went the wrong way down Interstate 85 in Spartanburg County. According to the state highway patrol, at around 12:15 a.m. the driver of a Honda sedan was traveling south on the northbound side of Interstate 85 near mile marker 75 when it struck a Toyota sedan head-on and then a Ford SUV. The highway patrol said the driver of the Honda, as well as the driver and a passenger of the Toyota died at the scene. Occupants of the SUV were uninjured. The wreck is the latest in a growing number of traffic fatalities in Spartanburg County. The county currently leads the state in traffic fatalities. The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office said it is working to identify the people killed in the crash and notify their families. 'I believe everyone is keenly aware that we have experienced other fatalities this weekend that we have already reported on. This just adds to the high number that we are experiencing currently in Spartanburg County,' said Charles Clevenger, Spartanburg County Coroner. 'I cannot stress enough that all of the motoring residents and visitors of Spartanburg County should obey all traffic laws, pay attention to every element of their responsibility while driving, wear their seatbelt and drive defensively. Law enforcement is present on our roads. It is how we drive when they are not present that may make the difference!' Horrified drivers on the A9 near Pitlochry were forced to watch in disbelief as the white Honda Jazz accelerated into oncoming traffic on Thursday. 4 4 4 Footage shared online by shows the vehicle speeding against the flow of traffic. It's understood the driver may have taken a wrong turn at a nearby slip road but continued on, posing a serious risk of a head-on collision on the busy trunk road connecting Perth and Inverness. Social media users have since slammed the dangerous manoeuvre. One wrote: 'Where do these idiots get their licences from?' Another commented: 'You would think they'd have the sense to immediately turn around rather than risk a head-on collision that could wipe out a family - maybe even themselves. "It doesn't bear thinking about the carnage if a couple of bikers, blood delivery riders, or emergency vehicles had been coming the other way. "I've driven that stretch hundreds of times in lorries, vans and cars - this is a wake-up call for every driver, every car hire firm, every parent who wants their kids to stay alive. "Thank the Lord no one was hurt this time.' A third added: 'Scary to think this wouldn't have happened before dualling. "There needs to be a process to review signage at junctions - not to mention clearing overgrown bushes that obscure direction and speed limit signs. Terrifying moment car dangles precariously over sheer cliff drop sparking frantic mission to save occupants inside "There's not much hope otherwise.' A fourth said: 'OMG, I hope they got stopped. Motorist who went wrong way on expressway says he "took the wrong road"
The motorist allegedly responsible for leaving a trail of destruction in his wake as he drove the wrong way along a central Japanese expressway has reportedly told police that he realized he "took the wrong road." Rossi Cruz John Elias, a 34-year-old Peruvian, is accused of driving against the flow of traffic on the Shin-Meishin Expressway in Mie Prefecture on Sunday and colliding with two other vehicles before fleeing the scene. Police arrested him on Monday. The incident separately caused a pile-up among a group of cars that were trying to avoid the suspect's vehicle. Four people were injured. Police say it appears the suspect was initially driving west along the expressway before making a U-turn and driving against the traffic. Investigators say that before his arrest, the suspect explained his actions by telling them he realized he "took the wrong road." Police say the man's cousin was also in the car and that the pair were heading for Yokkaichi City in Mie Prefecture. They say the suspect obtained a Japanese driver's license more than five years ago by converting a license he obtained overseas.

Wrong-way car drove for 10 km on central Japan expressway, causing accidents
Police in central Japan say a car that caused multiple accidents drove the wrong way for at least 10 kilometers on an expressway on Sunday. The driver of the small car is still at large one day after the accidents on the Shin-Meishin Expressway. Police are looking for the car and its driver on suspicion of causing hit-and-run accidents. The blue car is said to have driven in the wrong direction on the expressway's west-bound lanes in the city of Kameyama, Mie Prefecture. The wrong-way car bumped into two vehicles at around 11 a.m. and caused more collisions as drivers tried to avoid it. The accidents injured four women in their 40s to 60s. Police and the expressway operator say eyewitness accounts suggest the car continued to travel in the wrong direction to near the Suzuka parking area, about 10 kilometers to the east.
