Call issued for Swindon and Wiltshire people to get Covid-19 booster
Vulnerable people in Swindon and Wiltshire are being urged to get their Covid-19 booster vaccine. The call is aimed at those most at risk of becoming seriously ill from the virus. This includes all adults aged 75 and over, and those over six months old with weakened immune systems. Older adults living in care homes will also be offered the vaccine. Read more: Old Town café set to reopen after being closed for months The booster is considered the most effective form of protection for those more susceptible to the effects of Covid-19, especially as immunity from previous vaccinations fades over time. Gill May, chief nursing officer at Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board, said: "Covid-19 is a particularly nasty virus, and has the potential to make some of the most vulnerable people in our communities very poorly. "The effects of the virus, which is just as prevalent during the spring and summer as it is in the colder months, can often be life-threatening for those who are older or already living with a long-term health condition." She added: "Although the height of the pandemic may seem like a distant memory for many, hospitals in our region still find their wards occupied by people who have fallen seriously ill with Covid-19 and need urgent intervention. "Getting vaccinated is an added layer of protection against Covid-19, and ensures that eligible people whose immunity may have dropped can approach the summer months with a renewed confidence regarding their protection against the virus." Vaccination appointments can be booked over the phone by calling 119 or online at Invitations to book a booster vaccine are being sent out to all who are eligible, either by text message or letter. However, people do not need to wait until they are contacted by the NHS before booking their appointment, with thousands of slots now available at GP practices, pharmacies, and other community locations. Details of where and when these clinics are taking place can be found on the national NHS website at During the most recent Covid-19 booster drive, which took place between October 2024 and February 2025, more than 9.8 million vaccinations were administered across the country, including approximately 218,000 across Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, and Wiltshire. This total put the local region among some of the highest-performing health and care systems in the country for overall vaccine uptake.

NHS dental practice in Cornwall announces closure leaving patients 'so sad'
Patients of a community dentist in Cornwall have shared their sadness following an announcement that it is due to close permanently at the end of next month. My Dentist, the umbrella company for the Trewirgie dental practice in Redruth, has sent a letter to patients stating that from May 30, the practice will cease providing dental services and close permanently on that date. The letter states that "difficulties experienced in recruiting dentists to the area" and "increasing running costs" have prevented the practice from "operating sustainably." 'The decision to close the practice has not been taken lightly,' the letter said. 'Unfortunately, difficulties experienced in recruiting dentists to the area and increasing running costs have prevented the practice from operating sustainably. 'We understand this will be disappointing news.' The practice is now urging current patients who are undergoing dental treatment to complete this by May 30. My Dentist is also advising Trewirgie patients on the next steps once the practice is closed. They said: 'To help you to find another NHS dental practice, at the point you need your next routine dental check-up, you can search using the NHS website located at If you have an urgent dental need, please contact 111.' The letter ends with a touching note to past and present patients. It says: 'We thank you for entrusting the practice with your previous dental needs, and we wish you well with your future dental health. 'We are sorry that we have had to take this decision, and we thank you for your support to the practice during your time as a patient with us.' However, the announcement has left some of its patients upset by the news. One person said: 'For those still trying to get appointments at Trewirgie dentists and failing dismally, this is why. (I) think we all knew it was coming though! 'So sad, I've been registered there my entire life. Ms Milne was my dentist for about 25 years, just the best. '(My) fathers just told me it's the only dentist he's ever been at too! Makes it even sadder!' A spokesperson for My Dentist told the Packet: "In common with many dental practices in Cornwall and across the UK, we continue to face recruitment challenges due to an acute shortage of dentists. "As a result, unfortunately, we have been forced to make the difficult decision to close our practice on Trewirgie Road in Redruth on 30th May. "We are writing to all our patients to inform them of this and to provide advice on alternative places where they may be able to access dental care following our closure.'
