Final call for extended hours and free brush disposal at Barrie landfill
Saturday is the final day for Barrie residents to be able to dispose of brush and yard waste at the landfill free of charge. The City waived disposal fees for residential brush and yard waste following the ice storm in March to help residents manage the amount of debris that piled up, but that comes to an end tomorrow. Starting Saturday, regular disposal fees will apply once again to all materials. Also ending is the extended landfill hours, which was adjusted following the ice storm due to demand. Saturday will mark the last time the Ferndale Drive landfill will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., following May 31, it will return to its regular operating time of 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Residents are also reminded that the city is offering one last chance to pile storm-related debris at the curb for collection. Residents must have debris curbside no later than June 1 to guarantee pickup by crews making the rounds between June 2 and June 7.

Potsdam DPW asks residents to not put out entire trees for collection
May 15—POTSDAM — The village Department of Public Works is requesting that residents place only standard-sized piles of sticks, leaves and other yard waste at the curb for the annual brush pickup — not entire trees. At the April 28 village board meeting, DPW Superintendent Gregory R. Thompson said that in some cases, property owners have placed full-sized trees by the roadside, expecting that DPW crews would remove them. However, the crews are not equipped to handle such large debris as part of the regular pickup. "We started brush and garden waste pickup, with the intention of continuing this process through the month of May," Thompson told the Board of Trustees. "You know, we don't want any hard feelings, but we want all the land owners to realize that if they have someone come in and cut a tree down for them or several trees down for them in their yard, it's actually their responsibility to remove the tree." "Please don't bring it out and put it on the roadside and expect DPW to remove an entire tree or several trees," Thompson said. "The village is a good size and it takes us a month to get through it at least two times," he added. "So we really don't have time for those large projects. So we would ask everybody to keep their brush down to small diameter limbs, leaves, things of that nature, and this will go very well for all of us again." Thompson confirmed that brush collection will continue throughout May.

Spring yard waste pickup season kicks off Tuesday in Ottawa, here's what you need to know
The City of Ottawa says the spring peak leaf and yard waste season officially kicks off Tuesday. Throughout the season, waste collection operators will pick up separately set out leaf and yard waste at the curb until 8 p.m. everyday, said Shelley McDonald, the director of solid waste services in the city's public works department, in an email Friday. 'The peak season typically lasts for approximately four weeks but can be longer depending on yard waste quantities and the weather. All other times of the year, curbside waste, including leaf and yard waste is picked up by 6 p.m.,' reads the email. Residents are asked to take note of the changes regarding yard waste and leaf pickup, which are included in the 2026 Residential Curbside Collection Contract , the city says. According to the council-approved contract, operators will continue to pick up yard waste in 2026. However, residents will have to place their yard waste and leaves 'in brown bags or another suitable reusable container for collection, not mixed in with organic material in the green bin,' reads the email. The changes will allow operators to bring the waste to the Barnsdale leaf and yard compost pad at the Trail Waste Facility Landfill, the city says. It adds that the changes are more cost effective than bringing the waste to the contracted organics processing facility. The spring peak leaf and yard waste season takes place two times per year, in the fall and in the spring. More information about yard waste is available online.
