The annual event took place on Saturday in the city of Foshan. The race was organized by the Consulate-General of Japan and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Guangzhou. A record number of more than 630 people took part this year, including Japanese and Chinese employees of Japanese affiliated firms and their families. A crew of about 20 people on each dragon-shaped boat competed for time. The crews rowed with all their might over a distance of 200 meters. A Japanese participant said he had not expected to feel such a sense of unity, adding that he wants to take part with his colleagues again next year and win the race. Security at the venue was tight after an incident last September in which a male student at a Japanese school was fatally attacked with a knife in Shenzhen in Guangdong Province. Japanese Consul General Kijima Yoshiko said that local people can see participants enjoying dragon boat races, and it will help promote exchanges.
