Facebook parent Meta divides its AI teams, chief product officer explains change in internal memo: 'Our new structure aims to...'

Meta has reportedly reorganising its artificial intelligence (AI) teams to expedite the development and deployment of new products and features. This internal restructuring, announced in a memo by chief product officer Chris Cox, aims to enhance the company's competitiveness in the evolving AI space, where it faces significant rivalry from entities like ChatGPt-maker OpenAI, Google and Microsoft. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to a report by Axios, Cox said in an internal memo on Tuesday (May 27) detailed the new organizational framework. As per the memo, there will be two distinct units: an AI Products team and an AGI Foundations unit. While Connor Hayes will lead the AI Products team, the AGI Foundations unit will be co-led by Ahmad Al-Dahle and Amir Frenkel. "Our new structure aims to give each org more ownership while minimizing (but making explicit) team dependencies," Cox stated. This also marks a similar effort to a previous AI team reshuffle conducted by Meta in 2023, which also aimed to expedite development. How new AI teams at Meta will work The AI Products team at Meta will be responsible for the Meta AI assistant , Meta's AI Studio, and the integration of AI features across core Meta platforms including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. The AGI Foundations unit's will work on a range of underlying technologies, including the company's Llama models, alongside initiatives to enhance AI capabilities in reasoning, multimedia and voice. Meta's AI research unit, known as FAIR (Fundamental AI Research), will reportedly maintain its independent status outside this new structure. However, a specific team within FAIR focusing on multimedia will transition to the new AGI Foundations team. Company executives confirmed to the publication that no departures or job cuts are associated with these changes. Some leaders from other divisions of Meta have been integrated into the new AI structure. This call will steal your money: "Family Scam" working & how to protect yourself!

Meta reportedly splits its AI team to build products faster

Meta is dividing its AI department into two new teams, according to a report from Axios. Now, the company's AI personnel will be assigned to an AI products team, or an AGI Foundations unit. No jobs appear to have been cut. The AI products team will focus on consumer-facing efforts like the AI features within Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, as well as Meta's new standalone AI app. The AGI Foundations unit will focus on more of the bigger picture efforts, like improving its Llama models. As companies like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic make moves, Meta is trying its best to stay neck-and-neck with the competition. The company recently launched a Llama for Startups program to encourage early stage companies to use their products for generative AI applications. Meanwhile, much of Meta's LlamaCon event in April was geared toward showing that it can compete with OpenAI. This article originally appeared on TechCrunch at Sign in to access your portfolio

Exclusive: Meta shuffles AI team to compete with OpenAI and Google

Meta is restructuring its AI teams to speed up the rollout of new products and features, Axios has learned. Why it matters: Meta faces stiff competition in the AI race, including from OpenAI and Google as well as Chinese rivals such as TikTok parent ByteDance. Driving the news: In an internal memo sent Tuesday and seen by Axios, chief product officer Chris Cox laid out the new structure, which will see efforts divided into two teams: an AI products team, headed by Connor Hayes, and an AGI Foundations unit, co-led by Ahmad Al-Dahle and Amir Frenkel. The AI products team will be responsible for the Meta AI assistant, Meta's AI Studio and AI features within Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. The AGI Foundations unit will cover a range of technologies, including the company's Llama models, as well as efforts to improve capabilities in reasoning, multimedia and voice. The company's AI research unit, known as FAIR (Fundamental AI Research), remains separate from the new organizational structure, though one specific team working on multimedia is moving to the new AGI Foundations team. Between the lines: No executives are leaving as part of the changes, nor are any jobs being cut, though the company has moved in some leaders from other parts of the company. Meta hopes that splitting a single large organization into smaller teams will speed product development and give the company more flexibility as it adds additional technical leaders. The company is also seeing key talent depart, including to French rival Mistral, as reported by Business Insider. What they're saying: "Our new structure aims to give each org more ownership while minimizing (but making explicit) team dependencies," Cox said in the memo.
