West Lothian student urges others with disabilities to 'go for it' at college or university
Aaron has cerebral palsy, autism, oral motor ataxia, cerebral visual impairment and other issues An inspiring West Lothian College student with disabilities is sharing his education journey story to encourage others to 'go for it' and achieve whatever they want to. Going onto further or higher education, such as college, university, or an apprenticeship, comes with unique challenges for students with a disability, but a growing network of support is available Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS) offers tailored funding and inclusive college or university resources designed to help disabled students thrive during their studies. Aaron, a multi-disabled HNC Social Services student at West Lothian College, has shared his route to further education. 'I have cerebral palsy, autism, oral motor ataxia, cerebral visual impairment, and a host of other small, little, niggly disabilities that make up the legend that is me,' said Aaron. 'I am a glass half full kind of guy, and like to say that everything kind of works, just not very well. 'I actually started college on an Assisted Programme, which, in a nutshell, teaches people with disabilities vital life skills and is a key stepping stone in considering what we want to do with our future. 'I've guest lectured for Napier University's learning disability nursing course on my lived experience with nurses, and social care in general. This motivated me to learn more about Health and Social Care, as I wanted to understand more about the policies and practices that affect my everyday life.' West Lothian College's Student Support Team work with students across the college in all centres, providing help with all learning needs. Kate Fleming, Health and Social Care Lecturer at the college, said: 'Aaron has grown so much during his time at college. He is a driven student who overcomes any barriers he faces with his learning. 'It has been a pleasure to teach Aaron. He approaches every task with a positive attitude and a real desire to learn and improve. We're proud of everything he's achieved, and we're excited to see where his journey takes him as he progresses at the college.' Aaron added: 'My disabilities make daily college life a bit of a challenge when it comes to class lectures, work placements and accessing areas on campus, but I have had support since day one, and the level of attention and consideration that the college has put in to help me achieve my goals of studying has been amazing. 'I get help several times a week from Student Support who assist me with everything from scribe support, open and closed book assessments, guidance and time management planning. I honestly have had the best experience and feel valued as a student.' Aaron receives the SAAS Disabled Students' Allowance, a specialised support package that eligible students receive throughout their college and university studies at HNC, HND and degree level. The allowance supports students who have extra costs because of their disability. 'It's quite simply the case that without the extra support, I could not achieve my goals,' Aaron admits. 'The extra funding from SAAS means I can pay for a scribe to help with my coursework assessments, have the technology needed to help me with note taking in lectures, and additional student support to be there for me when it comes to my assessments and exams.' Aaron has a message of encouragement for any young person with a disability considering their options when they finish school. He said: 'Go for it! The sky is the limit, and the only thing holding you back is you.' To hear more about how the team at West Lothian College can help, email supportlearning@

Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers' ‘awareness' blasted by analyst
The post Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers' 'awareness' blasted by analyst appeared first on ClutchPoints. Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was blasted by Colin Cowherd on Thursday his lack of awareness. Pittsburgh has its answer under center for the 2025 season, signing the future Hall of Famer to a one-year deal. It was not easy for the Steelers to add Rodgers, but the franchise hopes their new quarterback can propel them up the AFC ladder. Advertisement As Aaron acclimates to his new teammates, a recent report came out of the four-time MVP blasting his former team, the New York Jets. Cowherd addressed Rodgers' criticisms of the Jets in an episode of The Herd on Thursday. 'For Aaron to be upset with the Jets' run game and dysfunction, bro, the Jets have been dysfunctional for a decade and a half. You chose them. This goes to the heart of what I've said about Aaron. I'm not saying he's not smart, and I'm not saying he's not talented, but I don't love his decision-making. 'Robert Saleh was on the hot seat. You chose him. Nat Hackett was a disaster in Denver. You chose him. He just lacks an awareness that feels so obvious to me for a smart guy. Aaron led the league as a quarterback in non-football stuff seeping into the locker room. Awareness.' Fortunately for the Steelers' new quarterback, he is not heading into a dysfunctional situation in Pittsburgh. Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season during his 18 years in charge, and Pittsburgh's run game is on another level compared to the Jets. Advertisement While Russell Wilson certainly was not bad last season, the quarterback position has not been a clear strength for the Steelers since Ben Roethlisberger was under center. Tomlin and company hope that Rodgers can kick the offense into a new, explosive gear, especially since the AFC contenders going into 2025 all share one thing in common: elite quarterback play. However, Rodgers will have to turn back the clock a bit in order to live up to expectations. The 41-year-old had an uneven season with the Jets and certainly is not what he used to be with the Green Bay Packers. It's certainly a gamble the Steelers decided to make when signing Rodgers. But his arm is still lively, and according to reports from minicamp, he seems to be in good shape. Overall, Pittsburgh is once again trying to take that good-to-great step. The AFC North will be its usual competitive self as the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals have their own Super Bowl expectations. That said, with better quarterback play, the Steelers have the talent to compete with anyone in the league. 'Abysmal Aaron' Rodgers Strikes Again In Finger-Pointing Move from Jets To Steelers
'Abysmal Aaron' Rodgers Strikes Again In Finger-Pointing Move from Jets To Steelers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Aaron Rodgers was once assigned the task of leading the New York Jets with an emphasis on focus and class, putting an end to the building's gossipy leaks. Advertisement It didn't work. It still isn't working. And the Pittsburgh Steelers probably need to stay on their toes here. The former starting quarterback of the Green Bay Packers won four MVPs there and was expected to bring some of the same to New York when he engineered his trade move. It didn't work on the field, as the Jets last year had him for the entire 17-game schedule and finished 5-12. To our eyes and ears, it didn't work off the field, either — and new coach Aaron Glenn, in jettisoning the QB off his roster this offseason, obviously agreed. Now the future Hall-of-Fame signal-caller is in charge in Pittsburgh, and the Steelers' hopes are pretty much the same as the Jets' hopes once were. Advertisement Also similar: The Jets changed most everything to his liking — and the Steelers have clearly done some of the same to tailor things in an Aaron-friendly way. And yet ... Aaron keeps gossiping and Aaron keeps leaking. As noted by Jets X-Factor, offensive lineman-turned-media guy Mark Schlereth is saying he recently visited with Rodgers. And? 'Aaron and I had a conversation about when he was with the Jets, how abysmal their running game was and how schematically it made no sense,' Schlereth said on the "Stinkin' Truth Podcast." 'I started the conversation, and then Aaron went on for about a 25-minute diatribe on just their run game.' Advertisement Yeah, but ... The entire "scheme'' was all about Rodgers, right down to the offensive coordinator and play-caller being his personal pal. What so the Steelers think they are getting here? A lock Hall-of-Famer who has the intellect to overcome his faded physical skills at age 41. What they need to recognize they are not getting? A guy who when the going gets tough ... seems to habitually choose finger-pointing as a way of making himself happy ... while still coming away with that familiar "Abysmal Aaron'' feeling. ‘Does not bode well': The 3 toxic phrases you should never utter your partner, according to experts
Sticks and bones may break my bones, but words can destroy a romantic bond. Psychologist and author Jeffrey Bernstein has revealed three 'toxic phrases' that people should never say to their partner if they want to keep their relationship strong. 'When we first meet, and during the embryonic stages of loving relationships, we tend to be on our best behavior,' said the mind doc while writing for Psychology Today. 'Yet, way too often, over time, we let down our guard and allow ourselves to respond to our partners in ways that don't feel good.' If these phrases become habitual, one's relationship is likely 'doomed to fail,' he said. According to Bernstein, the three verbal turnoffs are 'you're overreacting,' 'it's no big deal,' and 'you're too sensitive.' 'Even if you're trying to calm things down, such responses can feel dismissive and lead to your partner feeling judged,' said the psychologist who outlines these romance-eroding expressions in his book 'Why Can't You Read My Mind?' Dr Bernstein, who is also a counselor, cited the example of how one relationship was killed by these discouraging phrases. 'A few years ago, Lisa came to see me because she was struggling in her marriage with Aaron,' he explained. 'She said, 'In the earlier days, Aaron would tell me he was crazy about me, but in the last couple of years, all he does is tell me I'm crazy when I try to talk to him about important things in our relationship.'' Their relationship ended several months later. Another surefire way to jeopardize one's relationship? 'Keeping score,' according to Bernstein, who defined this behavior as mentally tallying things like 'who apologized last, initiated intimacy, or picked up around the house.' This reportedly 'breeds resentment and power struggles,' he said. Bernstein also warned couples off of 'stonewalling' or shutting down and refusing to communicate. 'Given that the hallmark of any healthy relationship is the ability to have calm, constructive conversations, stonewalling does not bode well for any relationship's future,' he warned.
