Murder accused from MP caught through ICJS database in city
Jaipur: A 47-year-old murder accused from Madhya Pradesh, who was on the run since 2020, was arrested late Thursday night in Jaipur. He was found threatening commuters near the railway station and Sindhi Camp area with a dagger. DCP (West) Amit Kumar said the accused, identified as Inderaj Singh of Maholi village in Vidisha district, was nabbed during a night patrol by Sadar police station personnel under the Khalsa Kothi bridge. The police recovered a sharp dagger from him. "Local passers-by and pavement dwellers told our team that he often brandished the knife to extort money, especially from travellers in the vicinity," said a police officer. When questioned, Singh failed to explain why he was carrying the weapon and was taken into custody. The breakthrough came when police checked his details on the RajCop CCTNS portal, followed by a cross-check on the Inter-operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS). The integrated system flagged him as a wanted fugitive in a murder case lodged at Nateran police station in Madhya Pradesh. According to ICJS records, Singh is accused of killing a woman named Rati Bai in 2020 and is booked under IPC Section 302. Officials said that without the swift identification through ICJS—a national digital platform linking police, prisons, prosecution, courts, and forensics—the fugitive may have continued evading arrest. The Inter-operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) is a national platform integrating databases of police, prisons, forensics, prosecution, and courts. It enables seamless data exchange across agencies, improving investigation efficiency, tracking of criminals, and judicial transparency. Israel-Iran conflict to impact oil supply to India, increase export costs by 40-50%
Israel's attack on Iran and heightened tensions in the area pose significant risks to India in terms of curtailed supplies of oil and a 40-50% increase in the export costs, according to analysts and trade experts. Early on Friday (June 13, 2025), Israel said it had struck 'dozens' of nuclear and military targets in Iran, following which Iran reportedly retaliated with drone strikes of its own. Following these developments, global oil prices jumped about 8% in a single day, sparking fears that a sustained escalation could push inflation in India up, since it imports about 80% of its oil requirement. Problems for India 'The ongoing Iran-Israel conflict is likely to pose risks to oil supply even though India does not directly import large volumes of oil from Iran,' Amit Kumar, Partner and Energy & Renewables Industry Leader at Grant Thornton Bharat told The Hindu. 'India imports more than 80% of its crude oil needs. Hence, even if direct imports from Iran are minimal, global price spikes due to conflict will raise crude oil import costs.' Further, Mr. Kumar said that around 20% of global oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz, which is located between Iran to the north and the Arabian Peninsula to the south. 'Any disruption around the Strait of Hormuz may affect oil shipments coming from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE who are key suppliers for India,' he added. Disruptions in this area could also significantly hurt India's exports in terms of time as well as costs, according to Pankaj Chadha, Chairman of the Engineering Exports Promotion Council of India. 'The escalation of the conflict in the Middle East once again closes access to the Suez Canal and the Red Sea, which will have a huge cost and time escalation for Indian exports by ship,' Mr. Chadda told The Hindu. 'Going around the Cape of Good Hope will add about 15-20 days per ship and $500-1,000 per container, which effectively works out to a 40-50% increase in costs,' he added. Impact on prices While oil prices immediately surged following Israel's attack, they are expected to settle back down, according to Norbert Rücker, Head of Economics and Next Generation Research at Julius Baer. 'Our best guess is that this latest conflict eruption follows the usual pattern, with prices rising temporarily before returning to previous levels,' Mr. Rücker said. 'The oil market is very resilient today and supplies are unlikely at risk. Storage is ample, spare capacity plentiful, and exports grow outside of the Middle East.' The price of gold, too, surged to above Rs 1 lakh per 10 grams following the attack as investors flocked to 'safe haven' assets. 'In times of conflict and uncertainty, gold remains the go-to hedge for both institutional and retail investors,' Amit Jain, co-founder of Ashika Global Family Office Services said. 'What we're witnessing isn't just a knee-jerk reaction. It's a continuation of a broader structural uptrend driven by central bank accumulation, weakening fiat confidence, and long-term inflationary concerns.'

Chandigarh MC goes after encroachers, illegal vendors as crackdown gains steam
The Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC) has intensified its drive against illegal vendors and shopkeepers encroaching public space in markets by issuing as many as 5,046 challans to violators over the past two months. The crackdown is targeting street vendors operating without licences and shopkeepers displaying their goods outside their designated premises, encroaching upon footpaths and walkways, not even sparing walls and ceilings in some places. As per official data, in April and May 2024, MC had issued 2,885 challans to the violators, a number which has risen to 5,046 in the same period this year — a nearly two-fold jump. In April, 2,500 challans were issued, contributing ₹30 lakh to MC's revenue through fines, while May saw a further 2,546 challans, adding nearly ₹25 lakh to the civic body's coffers. Even in March 2025, MC had slapped 2,655 challans, generating over ₹32 lakh in fines. The crackdown is particularly focused on commercial markets in Sectors 15, 17, 19, 22 and 41. Apart from illegal street vendors, a substantial number of challans has been served to shopkeepers who routinely display their products outside their stores, effectively blocking public movement. In contrast, during the festive months of September to November 2024, when footfall in markets was naturally high due to Diwali and other celebrations, the challaning remained comparatively low. Only 1,393 challans were issued in September, followed by 1,216 in October and 1,284 in November—all well below the 2,500-mark seen in the recent months. Daily anti-encroachment drives 'On the orders of municipal commissioner Amit Kumar, we are conducting anti-encroachment drives daily and are challaning the violators. To bolster operations, we have decided to increase the strength of the enforcement staff, aiming to at least double the existing workforce. We have now deployed one dedicated inspector in Sectors 15, 19 and 22, each, so that violators can be fined,' said joint commissioner Sumit Sihag. Smart solutions to keep markets clean As a long-term solution to regulate street vending and curb the growing menace of illegal vendors, MC is also introducing a comprehensive monitoring system, starting with the issuance of smart identification cards to all registered vendors. This new initiative, designed to restore order to the city's vending system, brings together several cutting-edge technologies to ensure transparency and efficient enforcement, including hologram-embedded certificates, chip-based ID cards, geofencing of vending zones, a mobile tracking app and real-time CCTV surveillance. It is pertinent to mention that despite repeated enforcement drives by MC, unregistered vendors continue to occupy footpaths, road berms, corridors and even parking spaces, obstructing pedestrian movement and posing inconvenience to both shoppers and shopkeepers. Sector 17, which has been declared a no-vending zone, along with Sectors 1 to 6, since 2019, continues to witness unlicensed vendors operating with impunity.
