Apple Leaves Behind Another MacBook Air
Newly redesigned MacBook Air laptops are seen displayed during the WWDC at Apple Park on June 06, ... More 2022 kicked off the annual WWDC22 developer conference. (Photo by) With the next version of macOS expected to debut during WWDC 20205 in June, Apple will leave behind several older deskbound Macs and the MacBook Air. That will leave a handful of Intel-powered Macs still able to run the latest version of macOS. This is expected to be the MacBook Pro models from 2019 onwards, iMacs from 2020 onwards and Mac Pros from 2019 onwards. Naturally, all of the Apple Silicon-powered Mac hardware remain current. It's worth noting that while the professionally focused Intel Macs remain inside the support window, Apple has removed the consumer-focused MacBook Air. Given the comparatively low processing power of their Intel Core chipsets and the heavy demands being placed on modern computing thanks to generative AI and other processor-intensive artificial intelligence techniques, the MacBook Airs have finally passed the point where they simply can't accommodate Apple's vision of a modern operating system. Even the 2020 MacBook Pro laptops will be struggling and owners should expect this to be the last update they will see. This speaks to Apple's decision to introduce Apple Silicon across the full range of Mac hardware. Back in 2020, the increased power and performance of the M1 saw the entry-level MacBook Air leap ahead of the Intel-powered competition. That advantage has been clawed back now, but it allows Apple to fully support those older machines with the upcoming version of macOS. It has taken time, but Tim Cook and his team are close to ending their dependency on Intel and the excess resources required to support two platforms in macOS. One more year, and the focus can be 100 percent on its own proprietary platform and leverage all the advantages that this offers. Now read the latest MacBook Air, MacOS and iPhone headlines in Forbes' weekly Apple news digest...

macOS 26 leak: Apple's next update could spell the end for these Macs
MacOS 26, yep, 26, not macOS 16, is likely going to be the next macOS version that Apple will release in the fall. The new OS is rumored to drop support for some older Intel-based Mac models that are currently supporting macOS Sequoia. The report comes from uncited sources familiar with the matter, who spoke with AppleInsider. These sources claim that the following Macs and MacBooks will not be supported for the new macOS version this fall: MacBook Pro (2018) iMac (2019) iMac Pro (2017) Mac mini (2018) MacBook Air (2020, Intel-based) These models are the oldest models of Macs that were supported by Apple's current macOS, macOS Sequoia. The fact that those models are said to have been omitted during the development of the new operating system indicates that they may not be in the supported list when macOS 26 drops. If this is true, it would mean that for a second consecutive year, Apple is narrowing support for Macs running on Intel processors. The Cupertino tech giant is also delivering the full feature set primarily to Apple devices powered by its own, homegrown Apple Silicon. If this rumor is true, here are the models that would support macOS 26: MacBook Pro (2019 and later) iMac (2020 and later) Mac Pro (2019 and later) Mac mini (M1 and later) Mac Studio (all models) MacBook Air (M1 and later) Reportedly, macOS 26's first developer beta may exceed 17GB in size. This is more or less 2GB larger than the first beta of macOS Sequoia. Rumors indicate the new operating system will be heavily inspired by visionOS's design language. So, expect translucent materials and rounded window elements. This would be the most significant visual update to macOS in years if this turns out to be true. Meanwhile, the naming scheme is worth a comment. Rumors say Cupertino will be shifting the naming system for its software platforms to match the year. The change is also said to happen for iOS (iOS 26) and all other Apple OSes. Apple's WWDC 2025 is coming soon, starting on June 9 with a keynote. During this conference, Apple will reveal macOS 26 as well as iOS 26 and other software. The first developer beta of the new macOS is said to be released immediately after the keynote ends, while the stable, public version will be released sometime in the fall.

Apple is no longer a premium brand in my eyes
Since the early 2010s, Apple has enjoyed a very enviable status in most of the world: that of a 'premium' brand. This was especially controversial back when the company still used Intel processors on its computers and really weak hardware on the iPhone, while still costing as much or more than the the advent of Apple silicon, especially the M-series chips for the MacBook and iPad, the company's products became a lot better. It seemed that Apple was finally earning the status it had previously been awarded on a silver platter. I thought it made sense now that the iPhone was so popular in the U.S. and across other then it all came crashing down. Promised Apple Intelligence features for the iPhone 16. | Video credit — Apple Let's be honest: a MacBook is a spectacular feat of engineering. It feels super nice to the touch and looks brilliant. The same goes for most iPhone models nowadays. Apple is still nailing its products in the design department. The problem is the point of a modern electronic device, that you've paid over a thousand Dollars for, if it doesn't work right. In fact, what's the point of paying those thousand Dollars if the device doesn't even give you what it advertised. I am, of course, talking about the Apple Intelligence fiasco that has been going on since the launch of the iPhone 16 last year. But so much has been said about Apple's take on AI that I'm going to skip that. I'd like to bring your attention to the latest iOS update that the company has released: iOS 18.5. With iOS 18 .5, there have been reports of people's iPhone overheating, freezing, and lagging like crazy. So what's the big deal about one bad update? The fact that it's not just one bad update. When iOS 18 first came out, it brought with it battery life problems to the iPhone. iPadOS 18 bricked M4 iPad models, prompting the company to halt the rollout when the problem became too prevalent to ignore. The Apple Vision Pro, a supposedly premium MR ( Mixed Reality ) headset, delayed its most promising features after launch. It seems apparent that Apple has been staggering its way through the last two years, hoping no one would notice. Apple is now interested in robotics but, to no one's surprise, that's now delayed as well thanks to the company's problems with AI. WWDC 2025 will be a subdued affair. | Image credit — Apple I've been saying over and over again that Apple just needs time, that the company will figure something out soon. I don't believe that is the case anymore. Apple employees revealed some extra information about the failings of its attempts at AI recently, and it painted a very clear picture. The company is running on outdated ideas and fails to see the importance of emerging technologies until it's too late. Apple has been hyping up incremental improvements each year at its WWDC ( Worldwide Developers Conference ) events. This ultimately reached its natural conclusion last year: when Apple promised fantastical AI tools that it has yet to deliver, drawing much-deserved criticism. Consequently, this year's WWDC event will reportedly be a much more subdued affair, focusing on more achievable promises. The Samsung Galaxy S25 series is great, and so is the Google Pixel 9 lineup. Those phones do AI right, and they've got software that works properly. Chinese competitors like Xiaomi and Huawei have also ramped things up with super powerful phones featuring new battery tech. That is what a premium brand is, something you don't feel cheated by after dropping a grand on. A brand that provides you with devices that you can be sure will remain functional after a standard software update. The iPhone 16 , the M4 iPad, and the Vision Pro are not that, and with the way Apple is going, I fear that the MacBook will follow suit really soon. Apple is no longer a premium brand in my eyes, it is a shell of its former self. Broken software, bad updates, stagnating innovation, and no clue on how to move forward. I hope that the company finds a way out of this rut, and soon. Else, Apple executive Eddy Cue's recent statements about the iPhone being irrelevant a decade from now will come true. Unfortunately, the AI device that Cue believes will replace the iPhone will not be made by Apple if it continues on like this.
