This week was a big one for the gaming industry with major announcements made out of a combination of in-person and digital events, including Summer Game Fest and IOI Showcase in Los Angeles, Unreal Fest in Orlando, and Xbox Games Showcase streaming live. All of this occurred amid the Thursday release for the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 console, creating an added layer of timeliness and excitement for gamers and the devs and execs catering to them. Per the description, the 'Atomic Heart' followup is 'an action-adventure role-playing game that brings you back to a retrofuturistic universe, full of new dangers. The sequel features a living world rich with possibilities and places a heavy emphasis on story, role-playing elements, and player freedom. The story unfolds in an alternate-history world, with events now expanding to a global scale.' * 'The Cube' is a a new multiplayer RPG shooter set in the 'Atomic Heart' universe. * Drinkbox Studios ('Guacamelee!') has revealed new Metroidvania Action-RPG 'Blighted,' where players 'battle their way through a psychedelic western nightmare to reclaim the memories of their people.' * 'Relooted' is an Africanfuturist heist game from South Africa-based developer Nyamakop ('Semblance.') * 'ILL' is realistic first-person action horror game that takes you into a dark fort overtaken by a mysterious entity, per developers Mundfish and Team Clout. It's 'a grim story, unpredictable monsters, a visceral dismemberment system, and realistic physics create an atmosphere of relentless terror.' * Annapurna Interactive announced heist game 'Snap & Grab.' Resolution Games and Hasbro's Wizards of the Coast unveiled the gameplay trailer for 'Demeo x Dungeons & Dragons: Battlemarked.' The news comes a week after the announcement that Atomic Heart has surpassed 10 million players worldwide. The reveal of the two Atomic titles mostly highlighted Atomic Heart 2, but still provided a solid outlook of what The Cube will be about. ILL is a survival horror game Mundfish and Team Clout are bringing to life, inspired and made from visionary horror experts too! Atomic Heart 2 is described as a 'spiritual successor' to the first game, while The Cube is an MMORPG shooter. 'Atomic Heart 2 is an action-adventure role-playing game that brings you back to a retrofuturistic universe, full of new dangers. The sequel features a living world rich with possibilities and places a heavy emphasis on story, role-playing elements, and player freedom.' Much like its predecessor, Atomic Heart 2 is set in an alternate-history retrofuturistic universe. In this utopian world of science and technology, humans lived in harmony with their loyal and fervent robots. Unfortunately, what was meant to bring about an era of peace and prosperity at the hands of advanced robotics and AI, has now spiraled into chaos. Atomic Heart 2 picks up with a world on the brink of collapse. It's up to the player to prevent it—however, beware, as the truth runs deeper than anyone may realize. Here are some of the highlighted features of Mundfish's sequel title: Realistic graphics that depict a dystopian, retrofuturistic setting. An expanded RPG system that immerses players in a living game world filled with various activities. The story continues: a gripping plot with mysteries and high stakes, where beloved characters return and new ones help the world unfold from completely different sides. An enhanced, explosive combat system that lets the player use both hands simultaneously—combining glove abilities with a wide array of melee and ranged weapons. The spin-off title is described as such: 'The Cube, a new multiplayer RPG shooter with unique world-building, an intriguing story, exciting quests, and constant progression, is shaking the Atomic Universe. A giant, levitating Cube with rotating edges appeared, hiding a deadly equation inside. Can you survive another turn?' Atomic Heart 2 is currently in development for PC and consoles. No release window/date is listed yet. Set in a mysterious research fort, ILL is a realistic first-person action/horror game that plunges players headlong into an immersive, atmospheric body horror narrative. From a development team that has worked with renowned film directors and designed monsters for horror films, and featuring innovative gameplay mechanics like a cutting-edge dismemberment system, binaural audio implementation, and realistic physics. ILL is both a love letter and an evolution of the survival horror genre. The title is built on the belief that games can go where films cannot get under the skin. To make the player not just witness fear, but experience it. Pain, dread, and disorientation are delivered straight into your hands with no escape, unlike in movies, where characters move you through the terror. The horror survival title is developed by horror experts who worked on films and series such as V/H/S/Beyond, Longlegs, IT: Welcome to Derry, Azrael, and various Sony Pictures horror projects. You can wishlsit the game now, but no release date/window was announced.

‘Atomic Heart 2' Is Confirmed, And Its Trailer Is Unmissable
Fresh off the back of celebrating 10 million players for its breakout hit Atomic Heart, Mundfish has finally marked the occasion in the way we hoped: by announcing Atomic Heart 2. At 2025's Summer Game Fest, it dropped its first trailer, and let's be honest — it's one of the best we've seen in a long time. Weird vehicles! 3D-printed whales! Surfing 'humans' with seethrough skin! Parachutes! Horizon Zero Dawn-style mechs! Grapple-hook wall running! Strip clubs with slides! Massive, meaty monsters! And, of course, the return of those sexy Soviet robots — all to the tune of Don't Stop Me Now by Queen! Are you not entertained? Atomic Heart 2, which still lacks a defined release date, will return the action-FPS to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Sharing the same retrofuturistic alt-history dystopia as its predecessor, it aims to be bolder with its approach to exploration, narrative, RPG elements, and — ironically — freedom. Most importantly, Atomic Heart 2 aims to showcase the impact of its tech-first, morality-second Soviet Union on a global scale. The utopian world promised in the early stages of the OG Atomic Heart, which was arguably home to the most gorgeous FPS art direction in recent memory, is shattered, but still somehow stunning. Humans no longer live in harmony with the robots and AI they created, giving way to abject chaos — naturally, only you can stop worldwide collapse. Finer details are next to non-existent, save for the exhilarating morsels provided by the trailer. Mundfish promises enhanced combat, allowing players to use both hands simultaneously by combining glove abilities with melee and ranged weapons — a massive boost to the original, and one that'll hopefully be complemented by more balanced and fair combat. Look, I wasn't the biggest fan of Atomic Heart when it landed in 2023. That won't stop me being thoroughly reinvigorated by the Atomic Heart 2 trailer, which is one of the most hilariously bats*** things I've seen in a long time. Promise is one thing, and execution is another — here's hoping that Mudfish capitalizes on feedback.
