Listicle: 10 restaurants that serve bugs and grubs
Papa's, Mumbai. Chef Hussain Shahzad's 12-seater restaurant is known for many things: Being on Time Magazine's World's greatest places list, for its mad rush when reservations open, for its hard-to-categorise Indian food. And for Bugs Bunny: Wild rabbit marinated in red weaver-ant chutney, delicately sauced with black pepper, cumin and sumac. The chutney, which has a GI tag, comes all the way from Odisha. Delish, at least that's what we've heard. Papa's Bugs Bunny comprises wild rabbit in red weaver-ant chutney. (INSTAGRAM/@PAPASBOMBAY) Quintonil in Mexico City serves avocado tartare with a side of ant larvae. (INSTAGRAM/@REST_QUINTONIL) Quintonil, Mexico City. Mexican food is more than just tacos, nachos, and quesadillas. Why not try an avocado tartare with a side of ant larvae? Or a salsa made of stink bugs? Or fish barbecued in a grasshopper marinade? These are the stand-out insect-themed dishes that chef Jorge Vallejo serves at his two-Michelin-star restaurant. Rumour has it that the food is so good, it brings diners to tears. Takeo in Tokyo has a waterbug cider ice cooler on the menu. (INSTAGRAM/@ Takeo, Tokyo. At first glance, it's like any other Japanese café – cosy, lit by warm lights, and impossibly well-styled food displays. Look closer. The shelves are stocked with packets of ready-to-eat crispy locusts, bamboo worms, and chocolate-covered black crickets. From the menu, you can order bee lemon sodas, a waterbug cider ice cooler, cricket pastas, and grilled silkworm sausages. They also advise you how to whip up your own edible insect meals. High-key sounds good. Inoveat in Paris serves gourmet dishes with organic, farm-grown bugs. (INSTAGRAM/@ Inoveat, Paris. This French restaurant prides itself on presenting bugs gourmet style. So, chef Laurent Veyet serves his special bao made with ground cricket flour, puffed worm cocktails, and cranberry cookies studded with insects. The bugs come from French farms and are fed organic produce. Veyet says his goal is to prove that consuming insects is a healthy, sustainable choice. And it can be haute cuisine too. The menu at Fura Bar, Singapore includes spicy, mealworm margarita. (INSTAGRAM/@ Fura Bar, Singapore. Who hasn't, at some point, craved a jellyfish-and-quail martini, or a 90-day fermented pumpkin and pineapple wine, right? The bar serves both, but the big draw is the spicy, mealworm margarita. 'We want to create new ways of eating and drinking that make sense of the climate we have now,' founder Sasha Wijidessa says in promo interviews. After the Singapore Food Agency approved a range of insects for human consumption in 2024, the pickings have been easier. Fire ants have become a signature item on the menu at Farmlore. (INSTAGRAM/@ Farmlore, Bengaluru. Fire ants, which are part of Kodagu and Coorgi cuisine, have become a signature item on the menu at Farmlore. They adorn a meringue and salad, and are blended into a sorbet. Their taste, locals believe, differs according to the trees they're collected from, which are usually mango or lemon trees. Protein-rich, they add just the right amount of citrusy punch to a dish. At Akkee in Bangkok, you can enjoy shiny, soft ant eggs in curries. (INSTAGRAM/@ Akkee, Bangkok. At the Michelin-starred restaurant, the starters are pretty epic: Crunchy coconut worms, nutty-tasting baby cicadas, roasted subterranean ants, crispy cockchafers. Shiny, soft ant eggs are dunked into curries, tossed into stir-fries, and ground into an omelette. They taste creamy, silky, and tart, diners say. Thai chef Sittikorn Ou Chantop hopes that more people discover insect cuisine. At D.O.M., Amazonian leaf-cutter ants are served on a thick slice of pineapple. (INSTAGRAM/@ D.O.M., São Paulo. Alex Atala, one of Brazil's most famous chefs, has been promoting entomophagy for a decade. At D.O.M., Amazonian leaf-cutter ants are served on a thick slice of pineapple as a starter in the tasting menu. They taste gingery, according to the chef, who discovered them when he was visiting tribals deep inside a remote region in the Amazon. In the culinary world, that pineapple-topped-ant is legendary. At Philadelphia's Cantina La Martina, you can enjoy worm tacos. (SHUTTERSTOCK) Cantina La Martina, Philadelphia. When Philly diners step into Dionicio Jiménez's restaurant, they ask for the 'special tacos', made with agave worm, a Mexican specialty. There's also a braised pork shank served in cauliflower ant puree, and steak served with chimichurri-drizzled chapulines. Jiménez recalls how his mum would swap apples for the addictive, salty chapulines at snack time. Time to rethink those Lays. Alchemist in Copenhagen serves cheese covered with live bugs and edible butterflies. (INSTAGRAM/@RESTAURANTALCHEMIST) Alchemist, Copenhagen. Here, food meets science, art, and technology… and some shock value. The tasting menu, which takes hours to get through, is dramatic: Cheese covered with live bugs, edible butterflies on nettle leaves, frozen honey with a single ant inside. They've also served ray jellyfish and freeze-dried lamb cranium. But that's another list, for another day. From HT Brunch, June 28, 2025 Follow us on

Trump calls for Netanyahu to be pardoned, corruption trial canceled
President Trump on Wednesday called for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to be pardoned and his corruption trial canceled. 'I just learned that Bibi has been summoned to Court on Monday for the continuation of this long running, (He has been going through this 'Horror Show' since May of 2020 – Unheard of! This is the first time a sitting Israeli Prime Minister has ever been on trial.), politically motivated case, 'concerning cigars, a Bugs Bunny doll, and numerous other unfair charges' in order to do him great harm,' Trump said in a Truth Social post late Wednesday. 'Such a WITCH HUNT, for a man who has given so much, is unthinkable to me. He deserves much better than this, and so does the State of Israel. Bibi Netanyahu's trial should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero,' he added. In the trial, according to The Associated Press, Netanyahu is accused of taking tens of thousands of dollars' worth of cigars and champagne from a Hollywood billionaire for personal and business help. The Israeli prime minister, in an effort to secure positive coverage for himself and his family, allegedly pushed beneficial regulations for powerful individuals in the media, the outlet reported. According to the AP, Netanyahu has denied the allegations of misconduct. Trump's post also comes after recent U.S. involvement in a conflict between Israel and Iran, with American forces participating in a strike against Iran over the weekend. The president went after the Israelis and Iranians on Tuesday, expressing his displeasure at fighting that went on between the regional rivals after the president had announced the parameters of a ceasefire Monday. 'We basically — we have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don't know what the f‑‑‑ they're doing,' Trump told reporters at the White House Tuesday. Trump Calls For Immediate Cancellation Of Israeli PMs Trial; Says US Will Save Netanyahu
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has called for the "immediate" cancellation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ongoing corruption trial, denouncing the proceedings as a politically motivated "witch hunt" by the Israeli judiciary, noting that it will be the US that will 'save' Israeli PM. In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday (local time), the US President expressed his shock over the continuation of the trial against Netanyahu, despite what he described as one of Israel's "greatest moments in history" referring to the recent Israeli strikes on Iran's nuclear and military infrastructure. "BREAKING NEWS... I was shocked to hear that the State of continuing its ridiculous Witch Hunt against their Great wartime Prime Minister! Bibi and I just went through HELL together, fighting a very tough and brilliant longtime enemy of Israel, Iran, and Bibi could not have been better, sharper, or stronger in his LOVE for the incredible Holy Land," Trump wrote, hailing Netanyahu as a "warrior" for his leadership during the recent military campaign. He also credited the Israeli PM's leadership for what he claimed was a "complete elimination" of Iran's near-term nuclear weapons capability. "Bibi Netanyahu was a WARRIOR, like perhaps no other Warrior in the History of Israel, and the result was something that nobody thought was possible, a complete elimination of potentially one of the biggest and most powerful Nuclear Weapons anywhere in the World, and it was going to happen, SOON!" Trump added. According to Trump, the charges against Netanyahu, which include bribery and fraud in multiple cases, are politically motivated and based on trivial allegations, including "cigars, a Bugs Bunny doll, and numerous other unfair charges". He characterised the case as a "horror show" that has dragged on since 2020, making Netanyahu the first sitting Israeli Prime Minister ever to face trial while in office, as per Anadolu Agency. "Despite all of this, I just learned that Bibi has been summoned to Court on Monday for the continuation of this long running, (He has been going through this "Horror Show" since May of 2020 - Unheard of! This is the first time a sitting Israeli Prime Minister has ever been on trial.), politically motivated case, "concerning cigars, a Bugs Bunny doll, and numerous other unfair charges" in order to do him great harm. Such a WITCH HUNT, for a man who has given so much, is unthinkable to me. He deserves much better than this, and so does the State of Israel. Bibi Netanyahu's trial should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero, who has done so much for the State," Trump declared. "It was the United States of America that saved Israel, and now it is going to be the United States of America that saves Bibi Netanyahu. THIS TRAVESTY OF "JUSTICE" CAN NOT BE ALLOWED!" he added. Israeli PM Netanyahu is currently on trial for three separate alleged corruption charges, known as Case 1,000, 2,000, and 4,000, involving allegations of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, as reported by Anadolu Agency. However, Netanyahu had consistently denied all accusations, dismissing them as "fake". His trial, which began in May 2020, marks the first time a sitting Israeli prime minister has taken the stand as a criminal defendant and under Israeli law, Netanyahu is not obligated to resign unless convicted by the Supreme Court, Anadolu Agency reported. In addition to that, the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague had also issued arrest warrants against the Israeli PM, accusing him of "crimes against humanity and war crimes". The charges include allegations of targeting civilians and enforcing policies of starvation in Gaza.

Trump demands an end to Israeli PM Netanyahu's 'witch hunt' corruption trial, says ‘the US saved Israel, and now is going to save Bibi'
US President Donald Trump has publicly demanded the cancellation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's corruption trial, calling it a politically motivated 'witch hunt' unworthy of a wartime leader. 'Bibi Netanyahu's trial should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero, who has done so much for the State (of Israel),' Trump posted on Truth Social on Wednesday. 'It was the United States of America that saved Israel, and now it is going to be the United States of America that saves Bibi Netanyahu.' The Israeli prime minister, Trump said, had been 'summoned to Court on Monday for the continuation of this long-running, politically motivated case, concerning cigars, a Bugs Bunny doll, and numerous other unfair charges.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If You Eat Ginger Everyday for 1 Month This is What Happens Tips and Tricks Undo — TrumpDailyPosts (@TrumpDailyPosts) Praise for Netanyahu's wartime leadership Trump's comments came shortly after a US-backed ceasefire took effect following 12 days of deadly conflict between Israel and Iran. The president did not hold back his praise. Live Events 'Bibi and I just went through HELL together, fighting a very tough and brilliant longtime enemy of Israel, Iran,' he said. 'Bibi could not have been better, sharper, or stronger in his LOVE for the incredible Holy Land.' He added, 'Bibi Netanyahu was a WARRIOR, like perhaps no other Warrior in the History of Israel, and the result was something that nobody thought was possible, a complete elimination of potentially one of the biggest and most powerful Nuclear Weapons anywhere in the World.' Despite the ceasefire, Trump had criticised Israel the previous day for launching fresh strikes on Iran almost immediately after the truce was announced. 'Israel, as soon as we made the deal, they came out and they dropped a load of bombs, the likes of which I've never seen before,' he said. 'I'm not happy with Israel.' Still, by Wednesday, Trump had returned to defending Netanyahu, saying, 'Such a WITCH HUNT, for a man who has given so much, is unthinkable to me.' Netanyahu is currently standing trial in three criminal cases—Cases 1000, 2000 and 4000—each involving allegations of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. He was indicted in 2019, and the trial formally began in May 2020. The charges range from receiving luxury gifts—cigars, champagne, and jewellery worth over $260,000—from wealthy associates, to allegedly trying to secure favourable media coverage by offering regulatory favours. He has consistently denied all accusations, calling them 'fake' and insisting he has done nothing wrong. Cross-examination in the ongoing trial resumed on 3 June in a Tel Aviv court and is expected to last up to a year. According to reports by Anadolu Agency, this is the first time in Israeli history that a sitting prime minister has taken the stand as a criminal defendant. Trump's defence echoes his own legal battles Trump, who is himself facing a wave of legal challenges and criminal indictments in the United States, drew parallels between Netanyahu's case and his own. 'BREAKING NEWS... I was shocked to hear that the State of Israel... is continuing its ridiculous Witch Hunt against their Great wartime Prime Minister!' he wrote, again using his familiar language to discredit the prosecution. He added, 'This is the first time a sitting Israeli Prime Minister has ever been on trial… He has been going through this 'Horror Show' since May of 2020—Unheard of!' Pardon not likely, says Israeli President Despite Trump's call for a pardon, Israeli President Isaac Herzog has clarified through media statements that no such request has been received and that a pardon is 'not currently on the table.' Under Israeli law, Netanyahu is not required to resign unless convicted and the conviction is upheld by the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, international legal scrutiny continues. The International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague has issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu, accusing him of war crimes and crimes against humanity for alleged actions in Gaza, including targeting civilians and using starvation as a tactic. The renewed public backing from Trump adds another layer to an already complex situation. Netanyahu's political standing is increasingly tied to his image as a wartime leader, especially after Israel's aggressive campaign against Iran's nuclear and military sites. The United States had reportedly joined that effort, striking two Iranian facilities with bunker-busting bombs and launching guided missiles from a submarine. Trump's comment—'It was the United States of America that saved Israel, and now it is going to be the United States of America that saves Bibi Netanyahu'—underscores just how tightly he has tethered Netanyahu's fate to Washington's influence. But whether words from Washington will influence legal proceedings in Tel Aviv remains to be seen. For now, the Israeli judiciary appears to be moving forward—with or without America's blessing.
