Moncton gym emphasizes mental health benefits of exercise

True Training, a Moncton gym owned by Craig Hatto, emphasizes the mental benefits of workouts like CrossFit and Hyrox. 'There's a lot of benefits to it. It definitely reduces anxiety and those types of things a lot of people experience these days, so it's very important to get in and be active every day,' said Hatto. Hatto's personal transformation and experiences led him to compete in a Hyrox competition in Houston. 'There is a group of four of us that went down, and we signed up, trained for about four or five months before that. I was about 40 pounds heavier and could run, you know, maybe 200 meters. This race involves running about nine kilometers overall,' he explained. Pushup A person exercises at True Training in Moncton. It's work, busy life's busy, kids keep you busy. It's nice when I walk in here…if your physical fitness is just important, your mental fitness, they go hand in hand, and take care of your body, take care of your mind, the rest takes care of itself,' he said. Jeff Leach also attests to the impact of the gym on his mood and productivity. 'I've gone times without coming to the gym, and I find that my mood isn't nearly as good. I'm kind of more down. I don't have the same amount of energy. I'm not as productive at work,' he said. Hatto is proud of the supportive community at True Training. 'Just how everybody supports each other, how we all want to do better and keep ourselves and other people accountable, you know, as we go through these journeys, there's always highs and lows, but you know, it's great for to be able to share with people and have them support you at the same time,' said Hogan. 14-year-old wants to become world's strongest teen

A Christchurch 14-year-old is vying to prove she is the strongest teenager in the world at the global teenage CrossFit Games. Tahlia Vosaki will fly to Ohio in the United States in August for the competition, which is reserved for the top 30 fittest teenagers in her age group. CrossFit involves high intensity interval training, which builds strength and conditioning through weightlifting, gymnastics and cardio. The 14-year-old said she had a rigorous training schedule, and switched to homeschooling last year to help her achieve her goal. "I train five days a week, and I have two rest days and on one of them I swim and do a recovery," she told RNZ's Afternoons. "On my training days I train once in the morning which would be about one-and-a-half to two hours, then I go home and do my schoolwork, and then in the afternoon I would go back to the gym and have a two to two-and-a-half-hour session." Tahlia Vosaki, 14, will represent New Zealand at the global teenage CrossFit Games. Photo:Tahlia Vosaki Vosaki's personal bests included lifting 160kg in the deadlift and 85kg in the snatch lift (lifting a barbell from the ground to overhead in one smooth motion). She said she got into CrossFit through her parents. "They would take me and my sister with them to the gym and I remember watching them do their CrossFit classes and wanting to do them," she said. Competing at the world games had been a long-held goal, she said. "There were two different steps to qualify for the games. The first one was the CrossFit open where a bunch of teams sign up and it was one workout a week for three weeks, then the top 200 move on to the semi-finals which was over a weekend, we had five workouts, and whoever qualified from that the top 30 goes to CrossFit Games," Vosaki said. "I hope to keep doing this and make it to the adult games when I'm older."

Rowe taking to international stage

Ella Rowe is competing at the Torian Pro in Brisbane this weekend. PHOTO: PETER MCINTOSH Ella Rowe is used to doing the heavy lifting. She will need to draw on all of her strength in her latest challenge at the Torian Pro — labelled as Oceania's premier CrossFit event — in Brisbane this weekend. The Bayfield High School athlete completed four online workouts earlier this year and needed to be in the top eight in Oceania in her grade to qualify for the competition. The 17-year-old made the cut and is the only Kiwi selected in the 16-17 years division. "I'm really excited," Rowe said. "I haven't actually gone to an international competition before. It'll be a really cool experience." Rowe will compete across three days — starting today — and complete two gruelling workouts each day. It will be a whole new experience for the up and coming lifter, but one she is very much looking forward to with her family and coach Ben Thompson by her side. "I have no idea what to expect. I'm just looking forward to the chance to compete." Rowe started lifting after calling it quits after 11 years as a competitive gymnast. The former Otago representative went out on a high, representing New Zealand in a tour team to Hawaii before walking away at the start of 2023. Her gymnastics coach suggested Rowe give CrossFit and weightlifting a go, so she headed along to Southern Peak CrossFit gym and never looked back. She linked up with Thompson, who had been a big support system for her. "He's very motivational and he can get me up early in the morning to train. "He's really good with people. We have a teens class at CrossFit and it's grown so much, but I think mainly people go because they like the people." That is one of the key reasons Rowe has stayed involved. "I love the people — that's my first thought. They're so supportive and cool. "I just like being strong. Some of my friends have started and they're like 'I'm going to be strong like you one day'." Rowe has further weightlifting competitions on her horizon. She qualified for the national weightlifting championships in the senior division later this year and will also compete at the New Zealand secondary school weightlifting championships, where she won a national title last year. She has also helped start a small weightlifting club at Bayfield with more students getting into the sport.
