‘Call of Duty: Black Ops 7' to Star Milo Ventimiglia, Kiernan Shipka and Michael Rooker; New Game Follows David Mason in Year 2035 (EXCLUSIVE)
Microsoft's Activision is shaking up its long-running 'Call of Duty' franchise with a break from tradition and some A-list stars. At the conclusion of Xbox Games Showcase 2025 on Sunday, 'Call of Duty: Black Ops 7' was unveiled as the next planned 'CoD' game from Treyarch and Raven Software. With the debut of 'Call of Duty: Black Ops 6' just last fall, this marks the first time ever that two 'Black Ops' installments have been released back to back in the life cycle of the 'Call of Duty' franchise. Ventimiglia will play David Mason, a protagonist previously introduced in 'Black Ops 2,' while Shipka has been cast as Emma Kagen, and Rooker is reprising his 'Black Ops 2' role of Mike Harper. Though the casting news comes amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike against major video game publishers, including Activision, Variety has confirmed 'Call of Duty: Black Ops 7' is not a struck title and work on the game has not been impacted by the actors union's work-stoppage. Activision marketing chief Tyler Bahl described casting Ventimiglia as David Mason (who will receive a subtle makeover so the character is more to Ventimiglia's likeness) as the right fit for 'an iconic character from the franchise and one of the fan favorites' from 'Black Ops 2.' 'And then we brought in Kiernan Shipka, which we're super excited about and is red hot right now, to play this character called Emma Kagen,' Bahl told Variety. 'It's a new character, and she is a CEO of this organization called The Guild, and we think her performance will really blow people away. And then finally, Michael Rooker, is returning to the franchise reprising his role as Mike Harper from 'Black Ops 2,' and I think our fans, you know, will be excited to see him, you know, come back and return to the franchise, you know, because he hasn't been here in a while.' Per the game's description, 'In 'Call of Duty: Black Ops 7,' Treyarch and Raven Software are bringing players the most mind-bending 'Black Ops' ever. Developed as the next evolution of 'Black Ops,' this is the first-ever consecutive release within the series, set more than 40 years after the events of 'Black Ops 6.' The year is 2035 and the world is on the brink of chaos, ravaged by violent conflict and psychological warfare following the events of 'Black Ops 2' and 'Black Ops 6.' Wielding cutting-edge technology, David Mason and his team must fight back against a manipulative enemy who weaponizes fear above all else.' The game is a co-op campaign and, like 'Black Ops 6,' will include round-based zombies. 'Call of Duty: Black Ops 7' will be released across Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and on PC via Xbox PC, and Steam. The game will be available at launch through Xbox's Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscriptions. 'Usually at this point in time, we would have teased everything that's coming out. And I think in a lot of ways we're setting this up more like a Beyonce album dropping; nobody's going to know about it, or nobody's going to see it coming,' Bahl told Variety. 'The whole goal was to really do something different, and for us to zag and show up in a unique way. While other Call of Duty games tend to focus on certain eras of warfare, such as World War II and the Iraq War, the Black Ops series focuses on secret missions typically conducted by the US and range from the Cold War era to more modern and even futuristic times. Black Ops 2 took place in 2025, while Black Ops 6 was set in 1991. All the Black Ops games have certain storyline ties with returning characters and antagonists. In the trailer, David says "Menendez," which is likely Raul Menendez, the villain of Black Ops 2. In that game, he was a Nicaraguan drug lord and leader of the terrorist group Cordis Die. At the end of the game, players ultimately decided whether to spare or kill Menendez, which raises the question of whether Mendez is alive or if this is some hallucination by David. No official release date for Black Ops 7 has been announced, but if it follows the same release pattern as other Call of Duty games, expect it to come out in October. As Microsoft owns the rights to the Call of Duty franchise, the game should be available on Game Pass when it's launched on PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles. Call Of Duty Black Ops 7 reveals story details but not Nintendo Switch 2 version
The Xbox Games Showcase has unveiled this year's new Call Of Duty game and as rumoured it's a direct sequel to 2012's Black Ops 2. Last year the big showcase reveal for Xbox, that got half an hour all to itself at the end of the main livestream, was Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6. This year It's The Outer Worlds 2 and Grounded 2 that was given the slot, but that didn't mean that this year's Call Of Duty wasn't announced anyway. That implies that from now on each year's new game will probably always get unveiled at the Xbox Games Showcase, although the reveal for Black Ops 7 was mostly just a pre-rendered trailer and for most of the time it wasn't obvious it was Call Of Duty at all. The fact that this year's game is Black Ops 7 was leaked some time ago (as was next year's game) with insiders suggesting that it's a direct sequel to 2012's Black Ops 2. Activision has now confirmed that, with the trailer showing that you're playing as David Mason from that game, with villain Raul Menendez also making a return. Black Ops 2 was set in both the 1980s and 2025 (which was the near future at the time) but Black Ops 7 takes place in 2035, which is 40 years after the events of last year's game. It's not entirely clear what's going on with the plot but apparently you, as David Mason, are fighting 'a manipulative enemy who weaponises fear above all else.' Black Ops 2's plot revolved around deadly cyberattacks, which has only become more relevant as time has gone on. There's very little concrete information on the gameplay, with a full reveal promised for later this summer. However, it's confirmed that the story mode will feature campaign co-op and that there'll be a lot of 'near future weaponry' and brand new maps in 'a signature multiplayer experience'. A new round-based version of Zombies will also be included, continuing the Dark Aether storyline – which means little hope of a revamp for the mode this year. More Trending There's no real explanation for why we're getting two Black Ops games in a row, other than it's being developed by Treyarch and Raven Software, who also made Black Ops 6. Usually, Activision's developers take it in turns, so the real rarity here is the same studio releasing any game back-to-back. What's also interesting is that there's no sign of a Nintendo Switch 2 version. Not that fans have ever been desperate for one, but Microsoft made a big fuss about bringing Call Of Duty back to Nintendo formats, when making their argument as to why thy should be allowed to buy Activision Blizzard. Thus far though, they haven't announced anything for the new format, with Black Ops 7 only confirmed for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. There's no release date but new Call Of Duty games are usually released around late October. Since Activision do now belong to Microsoft, the game will be available day one on Game Pass. The next main entry in the blockbuster Call of Duty series has been announced. Players can look forward to Black Ops 7, which is described as a direct sequel to Black Ops 6. The upcoming FPS doesn't have a release date yet, but if history is any indicator, it will be out around October. During Xbox's big Summer Game Fest event, the company ended the whole thing with a final trailer which ended up being Black Ops 7. Here's the trailer, which confirms a new zombies mode will be included. The game will include a co-op campaign, near-future weaponry, and a new round-based Zombies map. Interestingly, Call of Duty Black Ops 7 will not be skipping last-gen machines. Xbox confirmed that the big sequel will be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, alongside Xbox Series X/S, PC, PS5, and Game Pass. It's wild to see Call of Duty sticking around on such old hardware for this long, but at this point, it seems like the tech powering these recent games works fine on the older consoles. So I guess Activision and parent company Xbox see no reason to leave money off the table... yet.
