File Photo by Angelina Katsanis/UPI | License Photo June 21 (UPI) -- The New York stage musical, Dead Outlaw, has announced it will play its final performance on June 29. The show -- which has music and lyrics by David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna -- opened at Broadway's Longacre Theatre on April 27. David Cromer directed the production and Itamar Moses wrote the book. "Elmer McCurdy was an ambitious, turn-of-the-20th-century outlaw whose death at the hands of a Western posse ended a life of failed crime and alcoholism and began a brilliant career as a mummified side-show attraction that traveled the USA for decades," a synopsis said. Even legends get laid to rest. Join us at the Longacre before #DeadOutlawMusical plays its final performance on Broadway June 29. DEAD OUTLAW on Broadway (@deadoutlawmuscl) June 20, 2025 "By the time this journey ended, his name had been forgotten and his desiccated body was hanging in a house-of-horrors ride at an amusement park in Southern California, spray-painted a day-glo orange. Then one day, a grip for the Six-Million Dollar Man TV show jostled what he thought was 'just a dummy' and an arm fell off, revealing a human bone and beginning a hunt for the origins of this enigma." At the 2025 Tony Awards, the show was nominated for Best Musical, while cast members Andrew Durand, Jeb Brown and Julia Knitel were mentioned in the acting categories. Dead Outlaw was shut out, however, winning none of the races it competed in. A version of the show will be released as an Audible Original in October. ‘Dead Outlaw' Musical to Close After Disappointing Run on Broadway
'Dead Outlaw,' a hard-driving musical about a bandit whose mummified body became a curiosity, announced Friday evening that it would close June 29 after a disappointingly brief run on Broadway. The show announced the closing just 12 days after the Tony Awards. It was nominated for seven prizes, including best musical, but won none. It is the third new musical to post a closing notice since the awards ceremony, following 'Smash' and 'Real Women Have Curves.' The show began previews April 12 and opened April 27 at the Longacre Theater in Manhattan. The show's running costs are modest, but so are its box office revenues; it grossed $449,666 during the week that ended June 15. At the time of its closing, it will have played 14 preview and 73 regular performances. The musical is based on the true story of Elmer McCurdy, a turn-of-the-century figure who robbed trains and banks — often ineptly — and died in a shootout with law enforcement. His unclaimed body was preserved and then exhibited for years before being stashed in a California amusement park, where it was rediscovered in the 1970s. The show was first staged Off Broadway at the Minetta Lane Theater, which is operated by Audible; it is the first Audible show to transfer to Broadway. The reviews were quite strong, both downtown and uptown; in The New York Times, the critic Jesse Green called it 'the feel-good musical of the season, if death and deadpan feel good to you.' The musical was capitalized for up to $10 million, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. That money — the amount it cost to finance the show's development — has not been recouped. 'Dead Outlaw' features a score by David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna and a book by Itamar Moses; it is directed by David Cromer. The lead producers are Lia Vollack and Sonia Friedman. In a statement they said, 'Despite glowing reviews and a loyal following, the commercial momentum just wasn't fast enough in a crowded season. As the show reminds us, sometimes the most incredible lives are cut short.'

Tony Awards 2025: Audra McDonald Called Biggest Snub, Death Becomes Her Deprived of Any Wins and More
The 2025 Tony Awards dazzled with star power and standout performances, but it was the night's upsets and omissions that left the theater world abuzz. Chief among them: Audra McDonald's highly anticipated win never materialized, and fan-favorite Death Becomes Her barely registered on the winners list. All eyes were on Audra McDonald as she vied for her record-setting seventh Tony Award for her searing turn as Mama Rose in Gypsy. Critics hailed her performance as one of the season's finest, and the production was widely seen as a top contender in multiple categories. Yet as the night wore on, Gypsy failed to secure a single win, with Sunset Boulevard sweeping key categories instead. Another shock came with the underperformance of Death Becomes Her, the lavish musical adaptation that entered the night with 10 nominations and high expectations. While the show scored a win for costume design, it was otherwise completely shut out in major categories — a result that left its devoted fanbase disappointed and puzzled. In contrast, fellow new musicals Maybe Happy Ending and Buena Vista Social Club enjoyed multiple wins. While the night's biggest snubs dominated conversation, there were also plenty of moments that caught audiences off guard in the best way. Nicole Scherzinger, whose Best Actress chances had seemed uncertain after late-season controversy, clinched a major comeback win for Sunset Boulevard, besting frontrunner McDonald. Darren Criss added to the night's unexpected outcomes by taking home Best Actor in a Musical for Maybe Happy Ending, prevailing over the heavily favored Jonathan Groff. The ceremony itself kept the energy high, with key awards and show-stopping performances packed into the opening hour — including a lively Best Play win for Purpose. Meanwhile, beloved critical darling Dead Outlaw ended the evening without a single trophy, and Eureka Day staged an upset in the Best Revival of a Play category, beating Yellow Face. Even the commercial breaks joined in the surprises, as a live backstage ad featuring Criss caught viewers' attention and added a playful, meta flourish to the telecast.
