The best rpg of 2024 heads to Game Pass this month

Ash Parrish is a reporter who covers the business, culture, and communities of video games, with a focus on marginalized gamers and the quirky, horny culture of video game communities. Metaphor ReFantazio — a game that combines innovative turn-based combat with a story timely for our current political moment — is coming to Xbox Game Pass later this month. In fact, the Game Pass line up for the rest of May is actually pretty sweet. Metaphor, Atlus' best RPG since Persona 5, arrives on Game Pass next week on May 29th. Another fave, Tales of Kenzera: ZAU, an afro-futuristic metroidvania that deals with grief and loss and a heaping helping of African folklore, is also heading to Game Pass tomorrow on May 22nd. I'm also really excited to see that To a T, the quirky and cute new game from Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi, is launching day and date on Game Pass on May 28th. Venturing outside the realm of RPGs, Tom Clancy's The Division 2 arrives on Game Pass on May 27th and if you just gotta have something new to play today, there's Monster Train 2, a deckbuilding roguelike from Devolver Digital, out right now. Check out the full list of late May Game Pass additions here and there's also a list of games coming to the Cloud Gaming Beta too so may be something will catch your interest.

Games Inbox: Was GTA 6 Trailer 2 a disappointment?

The Wednesday letters page is very impressed by the graphics in GTA 6 Trailer 2, as one reader approves of Devolver Digital's counterprogramming for May 2026. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@ Minor information If that trailer was for anything other than GTA 6 I'd have some serious concerns right now, because after a year and a half I don't think I learnt anything new about the game. It looked amazing, obviously, but even if you call it a story trailer, we have no idea what the story was, other than Jason and Lucia are out being bank robbers. You don't need to know the plot to be interested in GTA, but I do feel that GTA 4 had a much clearer premise and GTA 5, while also basically 'people do heists', had an unusual set-up with the three characters. The whole Bonnie and Clyde thing isn't off-putting, but it is kind of basic and something that's been done a lot before, even if not in games. I wouldn't say Trailer 2 was a disappointment exactly but I can't say it really left much impression on me, because now I'm right back to wishing I knew more about the game. I think everyone's been mostly positive about it, that I can see, but this feels like a bit of a minor update, compared to the nuclear bomb that will be the next trailer, or whenever they open up about the gameplay. I can only imagine the range of things you'll be able to do. But thinking back to GTA 5 trailers I'm not sure they ever did a 'this is what you can do' type trailer. Maybe Rockstar feel they don't need it. They're probably right. Tolly Worth the wait Just watched GTA 6 Trailer 2 and you gotta be honest, the graphics look out this world and in a way I'm glad they have delayed it. I want GTA 6 to be perfect and if they need another year to do that, I'm fine with that. When GTA 5 came out and the online came out it was a nightmare. Half the time you couldn't get on. If you did, within 20 minutes it would kick you out; it wouldn't save your progress, took them months to sort it. So I think if they need 12 months from now I'm more than willing to wait. David Cheap at half the price Phenomenally electrifying. Marvellously astounding and terrifyingly delicious. Those are the words I will use to describe that second trailer. For Grand Theft Auto 6. It looks absolutely perfect. From the sun-soaked beaches, to the outlook of Vice City. To even the numerous characters. I wager that this is why a delay was announced. Rockstar are maestros at perfection and if this is the quality we can expect, 2026 will be a magical year for us gamers. I've also been pondering if I'll break my two secret rules. So, I basically in silence promised myself, two things and so far I've stuck to my word. The first was that I would never pay £70 for a title. So far, I've kept to that, but this will be a special experience for me. So I'll pay double that. Because I'm snagging the Collector's Edition. The second was that I'd wait for the right game to spend over £150 for a special edition, laden with extra content. It's arrived at last. I'd also like to ask GC, if Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is worth it's price. I'm considering purchasing it on PC, via CDKeys. Is it worth £25? Shahzaib Sadiq GC: It's worth much more than that. Email your comments to: gamecentral@ 4D chess Like many, I haven't had an Xbox since the 360 era and have not felt the loss of those once exclusive games and franchises on Microsoft's subsequent machines. Could that therefore be the purpose of their current multiplatform approach: to give non-Xbox gamers a taste of what they've been missing? There's certainly a lot more buzz and interest in their games and franchises recently than if they had stayed single format. Perhaps it's a clever long-term strategy to get people interested in buying an Xbox next gen when the plan is that those games and franchises which are currently multiplatform become exclusive again. I'm probably bestowing undeserved credit where it isn't due, as a coherent strategy of any kind from Xbox would be out of character based on their actions for many years now. ameisa (PSN ID) GC: We think you've answered your own question with that last paragraph. Till all are one Years ago, when my son was young, we used to spend hours upon hours on Minecraft, but as he grew up he moved on to Fortnite and then other games and sadly we neglected Minecraft. I just saw this Transformers world and am tempted to splash out on some minecoins to download it. Sorry if it's old news but it was a surprise to me. Mark Matthews GC: It says it's seven months old, but we've never seen it before either. The first variant So, the Switch 2 release date is creeping closer but let's look a little further ahead. What does everyone think will be the first new model? We all know there'll be one. Nintendo always does them, there were three for the Switch and something like 100 for the DS. The obvious guess is an OLED model but that is going to end up being very expensive, around £500 or more I would imagine, and that is a lot of money. I'm pretty sure that would be the most expensive Nintendo console ever, even accounting for inflation. The other obvious guess is a Switch 2 Lite, which I do think is a bit more likely. As far as I know the original Switch Lite sold well, so I don't see why you wouldn't want to do that as soon as possible. Something tells me Nintendo won't be that obvious though, so I wonder what else they could do? One that isn't portable, saving money but doing away with the Joy-Cons? That was always one of the rumours for the original, but it never happened. I hope it's something I can't guess at though, that'd be cool. Pakyard Force yourself I would just like to agree with your comments on Star Wars Outlaws. I'm not even that big a Star Wars fan but I really enjoyed it and you're right that it does some different things for a Ubisoft open world game. I've played Assassin's Creed Shadows too and I feel Outlaws makes more of an attempt to move things forward. It's true that most of the characters are a bit wet, and they probably should've put the whole heist thing more front and centre, but I overall thought it was a good game. Good graphics, decent action, lots of variety in worlds and missions, and the space combat was pretty good. I felt the Force was with it. Leibniz No competition I'm not sure I understand why publishers are panicking quite so much about GTA 6 and its release date. Obviously, it's going to be huge, the biggest thing ever. But not everyone likes GTA. I can take it or leave it and while I'd pick it up if it was cheap-ish there's no way in the world I'm paying £80+ for it. So there's a missing sale there. That's not exactly an unusual perspective, I wouldn't have thought. There's nothing in the world that absolutely everyone enjoys, not even chocolate. The question is what kind of game would make good counterprogramming, as I believe they call it. Obviously, you wouldn't dream of anything set in the real world or anything open world, because that's going to set up comparisons you couldn't possibly win. Even if you focused on action, and were better than GTA 6 (which isn't hard, knowing the series), I don't think that's a good idea. You don't want anything that's going to make someone just say, 'I might as well just get GTA 6 instead.' A role-playing game, particularly a turn-based Japanese one, would be about as far as you could get from GTA but even that's a risk, since it's probably quite long and a major time investment – just like GTA 6. Devolver Digital is an indie developer, so my suggestion would be something short, or that can be played in short bursts, like a puzzle or strategy game. Something like Into The Breach, for example. A game like that, that's really good, could even be bought by people that are playing GTA 6, as something to play in-between, especially if it's on Switch. That's my advice anyway. Knowing Devolver, it'll just turn out to be some dumb joke and they won't release anything, but they probably should. Klinger Inbox also-rans Those Switch 2 side panels look so dangerous, and you can guarantee Nintendo will never fix them if they find you've used them. I recommend nobody tries to fit them. Whistler I'm not sure what a remaster of a Mega Drive game really means? If they're going to redraw the graphics or use one of those ugly smoothing filters, I really don't see the point. Would be interested in a new game though. Devolver Digital boldly challenges GTA 6 with same-day game launch in May 2026

Source: Rockstar Games While the gaming community is reeling from the fact that Grand Theft Auto 6 has been pushed back to May 2026 , one publisher is not afraid to be in the limelight. Devolver Digital , which is famous for its quirky and unapologetic style of game publishing, has doubled up on its earlier assertion: to launch a game on the same date as Rockstar's much-awaited title. Devolver Digital takes a bold stand against the GTA 6 behemoth with same-day release plans — devolverdigital (@devolverdigital) While most studios are hesitant to go head-to-head with GTA 6, Devolver Digital is headfirst into the fight. On Twitter and other social media platforms, the independent publisher announced one of its forthcoming titles will release on May 26, 2026, the same day Rockstar's next major blockbuster enters stores. While the title itself has not been officially announced, the action is quite obviously a calculated and brazen reaction to the announcement of GTA 6's delay. Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo This move solidifies Devolver's reputation for going against the tide. The majority of publishers intentionally avoid releasing games alongside major titles like this, fearing they'll be overshadowed and drowned out by the surrounding media frenzy. Competition, however, apparently is half the fun for Devolver Digital. A risky approach to counter industry trends Big game launches have historically sent shockwaves throughout the industry. Developers tend to pivot release schedules to steer clear of huge titles, such as the 2008 debate surrounding GTA 4 and the first Iron Man movie. Devolver, however, thrives on controversy. It has established a niche based on critically well-received indies like Gris, Cult of the Lamb, and Ape Out, prioritizing creativity and originality over mass appeal. This is not the first time a weird release has coincided with a big one, 2023's "Barbenheimer" trend is a recent pop culture reference. Devolver may be shooting for an equivalent moment in 2026: a lower-profile, aesthetically risk-taking game that gets noticed via contrast with gaming giant. By sticking to its guns and embracing the chaos of launching alongside GTA 6, Devolver Digital is making a statement about creative independence and fearless marketing. Whether this gambit results in massive success or a niche victory, one thing's certain, the May 2026 showdown is shaping up to be unforgettable.
