Robotaxi news sends Tesla stock price surging

Buckle up. Tesla stock (TSLA) surged roughly 8.2% on June 23 following its Robotaxi launch during the weekend. The electric vehicle maker on Sunday deployed a small group of self-driving taxis picking up paying passengers in Austin, Texas. CEO Elon Musk called the event the "culmination of a decade of hard work" in a post on X, noting that "the AI chip and software teams were built from scratch within Tesla." Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives attended the Robotaxi event and said he was "very impressed." Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter "We took a route through a park with dirt roads and traffic cones, yet the car was able to navigate perfectly and picked us up right at our exact location," he described. "The interior features two touchscreen panels: one in the front and one in the back row above the AC vent. The back row panel is able to integrate with the user's Tesla account and sync with their Robotaxi app and automatically loads the user's content onto a suite of apps including Apple Music, Netflix, Spotify, Hulu, Disney+, and more." The self-driving experience may feel futuristic, but the need to buckle up hasn't changed. And the same goes for how investors view Tesla stock. Goessman/Bloomberg via Getty Images Tesla is the world's most valuable automaker, but its investors had a tough time earlier this year. EV sales slowed in key markets like Europe, China, and California, while Musk drew criticism for focusing more on politics than the company's core business. In April, Tesla reported weak earnings earlier this week, including a 20% year-over-year decline in automotive revenue and a 71% plunge in net income. Related: Tesla's robotaxi finally launches, but there's a twist Many Wall Street analysts now believe that much of Tesla's sky-high stock value rests on its ability to deliver robotaxis and humanoid robots. Musk said his goal is to expand the service to many U.S. cities by the end of this year, with "millions of Teslas operating fully autonomously in the second half of next year." Still, the company could face major challenges in scaling up the Robotaxi service quickly. Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed legislation on June 20 requiring a state permit to operate self-driving vehicles, effective September 1. However, compliance in Texas remains far easier than in some states, notably California, which requires the submission of vehicle-testing data under state oversight, according to Reuters. Year-to-date, Tesla stock is down more than 13%. Wedbush reiterated a price target of $500 and an outperform rating for Tesla stock, according to a research report published on June 22. Ives said the experience exceeded expectations and "lit the spark for autonomous driving." Related: Analyst unveils surprising Nvidia stock price target after nearing record high "The key takeaways are that it was a comfortable, safe, and personalized experience. The ride itself was completely smooth, and it was indistinguishable that the car was driverless as there was never a moment in the vehicle where we felt as if it did something irrational," Ives wrote. Ives said this is the beginning of a "$1 trillion autonomous journey." "Today's successful Robotaxi launch is really just the beginning of the Tesla AI story. The Robotaxi's we experienced today were foundational, and there is a path for the future where these Robotaxis may also have Grok integration, interior customization, and a much more user-centric focus as there's no longer a need to focus on the driver experience," Ives added. More Tesla: Tesla robotaxi launch hits major speed bumpTesla claims rival startup is built on stolen trade secrets10,000 people join Tesla class action lawsuit over key issue Wedbush's price target on Tesla is the highest among Wall Street analysts. UBS analyst Joseph Spak also raised the price target on Tesla to a more cautious $215 from $190, maintaining a sell rating on the shares, reported. The analyst warned in a research note that the autonomous ride-hailing opportunity is already priced into the stock. According to TipRanks, Wall Street analysts have an average stock price target of $287 for Tesla, representing a 17.7% downside from the last price of $348.68. Tesla stock pops 8% after 'foundational' robotaxi launch in Austin

Tesla (TSLA) stock popped as its robotaxi test kicked off smoothly on Sunday, with investors and Tesla enthusiasts breathing a sigh of relief — at least for now. 'The @Tesla_AI robotaxi launch begins in Austin [Sunday] afternoon with customers paying a $4.20 flat fee!' CEO Elon Musk posted on X, confirming the start of the test in Austin, Texas. Following Musk's tweet, numerous posters on X claimed they were able to hail and ride Tesla Model Ys emblazoned with 'Robotaxi' graphics in Austin, with one claiming he rode on 11 separate trips alone. Tesla stock closed up 8.2% on Monday. Read more about Tesla's stock moves and today's market action. Tesla is starting off with 10 to 20 Model Y SUVs running as robotaxis in a geofenced area of Texas, with not only safety teleoperators able to control the vehicle in case of emergency but also a Tesla employee sitting in the passenger seat who can turn the vehicle off in case of an issue. Only select invited Tesla users were invited to test the robotaxi service in Austin. Scaling a robotaxi business that could take on industry leader Waymo (GOOG, GOOGL) would take thousands of vehicles operating without safety operators, as well as creating the infrastructure to clean and service the robotaxis. While some see the robotaxi launch as the start of a new era, others think the scale issue will be a big one. "We believe the much better question ahead is on the path of scaling, which we believe will be long, and we caution against overoptimism," Barclays' Dan Levy wrote in a note to clients Monday morning. Levy has an Equal weight rating (the equivalent of Hold) and a $275 price target. In addition to scale, there is a big concern over safety. Other players, like GM's Cruise (GM) and Uber (UBER), had to cease operations following high-profile accidents, with an Uber test leading to a pedestrian death. Earlier on Monday Reuters reported that Tesla said answers to regulator NHTSA's questions regarding safety of its robotaxi operations was confidential business information, and should not be made public. Nonetheless, Wall Street bulls were cheering Tesla's early success. 'We took two approximately 15 minute rides around Austin and the key takeaways are that it was a comfortable, safe, and personalized experience,' Wedbush analyst and Tesla bull Dan Ives wrote in a note published late Sunday. Ives has an Outperform rating on Tesla and a lofty $500 price target. In a particularly tense moment, Ives said, the robotaxi drove up a hill on a narrow road with cars parked on both sides, oncoming traffic, and people opening their car doors into the road, but the robotaxi 'masterfully maneuvered with patience and safety among this chaos.' The ride also lets users sync their Tesla accounts with the robotaxi, allowing streaming apps like Netflix, Spotify, Hulu, and Disney+ to load with users' content ready to be played, Ives said. 'The Robotaxis we experienced today were foundational, and there is a path for the future where these Robotaxis may also have Grok integration, interior customization, and a much more user-centric focus as there's no longer a need to focus on the driver experience,' Ives said. Tesla hasn't revealed its next steps or when the general public will be allowed to summon a robotaxi in Austin. Musk has said he expects 'millions' of robotaxis to be driving around by the second half of 2026, but the CEO has a history of making highly speculative predictions that have not come to fruition. Huda declared 'I'm a mommy' on 'Love Island USA.' The internet reacted in the best way.

"I'm a mommy." Pet moms, nannies and parents of actual human children are all taking to social media to declare that statement, thanks to a now-viral clip from the latest season of "Love Island USA." On the show's June 12 episode, Season 7 cast member Huda Mustafa tells fellow islander Nic Vansteenberghe that she has a 4-year-old daughter. Rather than simply saying that she has a daughter, Mustafa described herself as "a mommy," which seemingly confused Vansteenberghe. The chat, which was subsequently posted to the official "Love Island USA" TikTok, has since gone viral, garnering more than 22 million views and two million likes as of June 23. Mustafa, who is a single mother of a 4-year-old, told the other girl islanders but not the guys about her daughter. After telling Jeremiah Brown, who she was coupled up with at the time, that she has a daughter, Mustafa chose to confide in Vansteenberghe. Huda is mommy to her daughter… Mamacita to Nic. 👶 #LoveIslandUSA @hudabubbaaa @Nicolas Vansteenberghe During the conversation, Vansteenberghe appeared to slowly process the information, leading to the now-viral exchange. "I'm a mommy," Mustafa told Vansteenberghe. "Mommy," he replied. "I'm a mom," she reiterated. "Mamacita," he said. "No, I'm a mommy," she said for a third time. "A mom of what? A dog?" he asked. "I have a daughter," she finally said. "Like in real life?" he asked. "Yeah," she said. "Like a daughter, like a real baby?" he asked. "Yeah, like a human child," she said. People were quick to react to the conversation on social media. "Bye why is he so lost," one person said. Another said, "'mom of what' is fryingggg me." When mother meets mother. 😍 #LoveIslandUSA #HotGirlSummer The audio of the conversation has been used on more than 3,000 TikTok videos since. While some — like Demi Lovato and Megan Thee Stallion — have lip-synced over the clip to make new versions, others have taken their own spin on the audio. Pet owners, pregnant women and nannies have declared themselves mommies. The conversation has also been recreated for cakes, songs and artwork. Even Megan Thee Stallion, who entered the villa to host a challenge on the June 19 episode, said the conversation was her favorite moment of the season so far. "Why would Nic be like, 'Mommy? Mamacita?'" she said. "I was like, 'Friend, you good?'" Watch it here: Streaming your favorite shows on Disney+, Peacock, Sling TV, more "Love Island USA" Season 7 is currently premiering on Peacock.
