Shaboozey Defends 'Incredibly Talented, Hard Working' Megan Moroney After Viral Side-Eye Moment at 2025 AMAs
Shaboozey defended Megan Moroney following the viral side-eye moment during the 2025 American Music Awards on Monday, May 26 He appeared skeptical after she read the teleprompter, saying that the Carter family "basically invited country music" Shaboozey also posted on X about "the real history of country music"Shaboozey has nothing but respect for Megan Moroney. The "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" singer defended Moroney, 27, in the comments of her latest Instagram postm on Tuesday, May 27, after he gave her side-eye during the 2025 American Music Awards and the moment went viral. "Just want to clear something up: my reaction at the AMAs had nothing to do with Megan Moroney!" Shaboozey, 30, wrote. "She's an incredibly talented, hard-working artist who's doing amazing things for country music, and I've got nothing but respect for her." He continued: "I've seen some hateful comments directed at her today, and that's not what this moment was about. Let's not twist the message — she is amazing and someone who represented the country community in the highest light." No strangers to the world of country music, @_megmoroney and @ShaboozeysJeans are here to present the award for Favorite Country Duo or Group! #AMAs — American Music Awards (@AMAs) May 27, 2025 is now available in the Apple App Store! Download it now for the most binge-worthy celeb content, exclusive video clips, astrology updates and more! The social media love comes after Shaboozey's viral side-eye moment during the 2025 AMAs when he and Moroney presented the Favorite Country Duo or Group award at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas. Reading the teleprompter, Shaboozey acknowledged the late Charley Pride, who won the Favorite Male Country Artist award in the AMA's first ceremony, and was a trailblazer for Black country musicians. Moroney's line was: "That same year, Favorite Female Artist went to Lynn Anderson. And this award went to the Carter family, who basically invented country music." This prompted a skeptical reaction from Shaboozey, who glanced at Moroney and briefly laughed before continuing. The next morning, he addressed the viral moment on X while also referring to Black artists' influence on country music. "When you uncover the true history of country music, you find a story so powerful that it cannot be erased…" Shaboozey wrote. "The real history of country music is about people coming together despite their differences, and embracing and celebrating the things that make us alike." . Though the Carter family (made up of A. P. Carter, Sara Dougherty Carter and Maybelle Addington Carter) may be considered the first family of country music, they were influenced by Lesley Riddle. The Black guitarist helped A.P. Carter "gather song material" almost a century ago, and through the years, Black musicians continued to shape and influence the country music genre that fans know today. AMAs 2025: Shaboozey Goes Viral For Reaction To Megan Moroney Saying The Carter Family Invented Country Music
Shaboozey became a meme following a viral moment at the 2025 American Music Awards. The country star took the stage in Las Vegas next to fellow artist Megan Moroney to present the Favorite Country Duo or Group category. More from Deadline American Music Awards 2025 Red Carpet Photos: Benson Boone, Shaboozey, Ciara, Lainey Wilson, Nikki Glaser & More Janet Jackson Takes The Icon Award At The 2025 AMAs: 'I Don't Consider Myself An Icon' Billie Eilish Dominates American Music Awards With Success In All Nominated Categories - See The Full Winners List Shaboozey started by remembering that country music has been a part of the AMAs' history, recalling that the award for Favorite Male Country Artist went to Charley Pride. Things got awkward when Moroney took a turn reading off the teleprompter, saying, 'That same year, Favorite Female Artist went to Lynn Anderson, and this award [Favorite Country Duo or Group] went to the Carter family, who basically invented country music.' Shaboozey paused to process Moroney's words and let out a laugh before continuing to present the nominees in the category, which was ultimately won by the duo Dan and Shay. UPDATE: The Carter Family was an American folk music group known for songs like 'Wabash Cannonball,' 'Can the Circle Be Unbroken,' 'Wildwood Flower,' 'Keep on the Sunny Side,' and 'I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes.' June Carter — known as June Carter Cash after she married Johnny Cash — was portrayed by Reese Witherspoon in 2005's Walk the Line. Shaboozey may have had a more recent (Cowboy) Carter in mind. Indeed, Beyoncé won two AMAs during the ceremony. Watch his reaction in the video below. Jennifer Lopez hosted the 2025 AMAs live from the Fontainebleau Las Vegas. Some of the winners of the night included Eminem, who won his first AMAs in 15 years for Favorite Male Hip-Hop Artist and Favorite Hip-Hop Album, Billie Eilish won all seven of her categories, including Artist of the Year and Album of the Year, while Beyoncé took the Favorite Female Country Artist award and Favorite Country Album. Despite being nominated for six awards, Taylor Swift did not attend the ceremony and did not win any awards . Although, her fans made heavy speculations about the possibility of announcing her Taylor Versions for Reputation and her debut album. Earlier in March, during the iHeartRadio Music Awards, Swift accepted the "Tour of the Century" award via a pre-recorded message. In the video, she wore a snake necklace, a symbol heavily associated with her Reputation era, leading fans to believe she was hinting at the upcoming re-recording . Furthermore, the part about Reputation in the Eras Tour book started at page 62 and Reputation is Swift's fifth album. So, with the mirrorball effect, 26/5 should be the date of announcing Reputation TV. While no official announcement has been made, the combination of symbolic gestures and legal movements suggests that Reputation (Taylor's Version) may be on the horizon.
