Williams International bringing $1 billion capital investment, 330 jobs to Okaloosa County

OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — A Williams International 'high-volume aviation gas turbine engine manufacturing facility' is coming to Okaloosa County, Florida, according to state officials. Greyhound just added a Mobile bus stop — and Escambia County is next According to a news release from Gov. Ron DeSantis' office, the State of Florida and anticipate a major capital investment exceeding $1 billion, marking one of the largest projects in Northwest Florida's history. 'This is a monumental project that will have a lasting impact on both Okaloosa County's economy and the entire region,' Okaloosa County Commissioner Paul Mixon said. 'We are fortunate to have been able to invest in the infrastructure at Shoal River Industrial Park to attract an aerospace industry leader like Williams International, and I am thankful to One Okaloosa EDC and Florida Commerce for their hard work and support in this effort.' Aerospace and aviation manufacturer Williams International began a multi-state search for a location in 2023. That search is now complete, as the new facility will be located in the Shoal River Industrial Park and will be constructed in three phases. 'This billion-dollar investment is a major win for the Free State of Florida and for Floridians,' Gov. DeSantis said. 'Williams International's investment in the Florida Panhandle will create more than 330 jobs, and is a success story of the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund in Northwest Florida.' DeSantis used the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund to award $3.2 million to Okaloosa County in 2022. Construction is scheduled to begin on the 250,000-square-foot facility later in 2025, with completion expected by late 2026. More facilities are planned to be built in 2028; a final 500,000 square foot facility is scheduled for completion in 2035-2036, according to state officials. A release from the Gov. DeSantis' office said FloridaCommerce partnered with CareerSource Florida, Florida's Great Northwest, Space Florida, Okaloosa County, and Triumph Gulf Coast to secure the project. Severe weather in Mobile: When it rains, it pours Greyhound has announced that they will extend the Birmingham–Montgomery line to Atmore starting June 4, 2025. An additional stop has been added to Mobile, and that service has already started. The expansion means that Mobile is now connected to Birmingham, Montgomery and Atlanta, and Atmore will be connected as of June 4, 2025. According to the news release, this also means that Alabama will now be connected to several large cities in the South — Jacksonville, Miami, and Houston. 'Expanding service in Alabama reflects the rising demand for affordable, convenient travel in the South and beyond,' said Karina Frayter, head of communications at Flix North America. 'From students and young professionals to families and commuters, travelers are prioritizing value and reliability in intercity travel—and this added service helps us meet that demand in a rapidly growing region.' Two people died and nearly 40 people were injured in a Greyhound bus crash on a western Tennessee highway, according to first responders. Lt. Christopher Hosick of the Tennessee Highway Patrol confirmed the two deaths in a statement on May 27. "The collision involved a passenger vehicle and a large passenger bus," Hosick wrote in an email. "I can confirm two fatalities and multiple others with injuries. The investigation is still ongoing." Highway patrol declined to say how the collision happened but said the department will release a preliminary information report when it is available. The incident happened May 26 around 6:48 p.m. on Highway 70 eastbound in Madison County, according to Madison County Fire Rescue, near Jackson, Tennessee. Fire rescue authorities said 39 people were injured, and ambulances took 27 of them to facilities for treatment. Thirty-two passengers, one bus operator and one relief driver were on board, the spokesperson told USA TODAY on May 27. "Thirty people were hospitalized, and most have already been released," Greyhound said. "Our team is actively investigating the situation and providing necessary assistance to our passengers, the driver, and law enforcement. As the investigation is ongoing, we have no further comments at this time." There was no word yet on whether the five other people who were injured were from a separate vehicle or vehicles. USA TODAY is reaching out to authorities for more information. Cause of crash unknown Fire rescue did not say exactly what happened. According to fire and rescue, multiple agencies responded to the crash, including the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Madison County Sheriff's Office and MedCenter EMS. When contacted on May 27, the sheriff's office referred USA TODAY to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. MedCenter EMS did not immediately respond. 'We ask the community to please avoid the area for the next several hours to allow emergency personnel to safely manage the situation,' fire rescue posted online. 'Our thoughts are with all those affected by this incident, and we remain committed to providing the highest level of care and support.' As of May 28, THP Critical Incident Response Team and Motor Carrier Safety Division have reportedly completed their preliminary investigation, but will continue collecting facts, witness interviews, and analyzing evidence in the next phase of the investigation. The incident occurred near Coast Highway in the area on Memorial Day, May 26, just before 3:00 p.m., per local police. It involved a 15-year-old driver with a permit and an adult male passenger in the vehicle. A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver "traveled from the upper parking lot" of a supermarket and "breached a fence barrier and continued down an embankment before coming to rest" on the highway, police said. USA TODAY has reached out to the Laguna Beach Police Department for more information. Nashville-bound Greyhound bus crashes: 2 dead, 39 injured According to the Laguna Beach Police Department, the man died at the scene. The driver was hospitalized with significant injuries. "It appeared to be on a permitted driver ... with her father out essentially in a driving lesson sort of situation," Lt. Jesse Schmidt told KCAL News. "Gas pedal-brake pedal confusion and tumbled over a 40-foot cliff onto Coast Highway." Outlets have reported that the teen is in stable condition and will survive her injuries. An investigation is ongoing.
