Musk says he still wants to be Tesla CEO, will do less political spending
STORY: :: Qatar Economic Forum :: Elon Musk says he still wants to be Tesla CEO, will do less political spending in the future :: Doha, Qatar :: May 20, 2025 MISHAL HUSAIN, REPORTER: "Do you see yourself and are you committed to still being the Chief Executive of Tesla in five years time?" MUSK: "Yes." HUSAIN: "No doubt about that at all?" MUSK: "Well, not if I die." HUSAIN: "Ok, short of that." MUSK: "Let me see if I'm dead." // MUSK: "In terms of political spending, I'm going to do a lot less in the future." HUSAIN: "And why is that?" MUSK: "I think I've done enough." HUSAIN: "Is it because of blowback?" MUSK: "Well if I see a reason to, to political spending in the future I will do it. I do not currently see a reason." Musk made the comments via video call at the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha weeks after the electric vehicle maker's chair dismissed reports that the board had approached executive search firms about finding his successor. His comments could have large implications for next year's mid-term elections as he has been a Republican political mega donor. He helped Donald Trump get elected as U.S. President with a quarter of a billion dollars in donations and set up the administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which he is leading. The close involvement has given rise to doubts about his focus on the world's most valuable automaker in recent months. Having reasonable control of Tesla was the most important factor in staying on as head of the company, he said. Musk said at the event that Tesla had already turned around sales, and demand was strong in regions apart from Europe where the company has faced protests over his political views.

What is the best way to write a crossword clue describing Elon Musk?
Pity the constructor of American crosswords. A name appears in the news and it is made of four especially useful letters. It appears more and more throughout the 2010s and previously you would have clued it by making reference to a not especially well known university in North Carolina. But after a few good years, and assuming you want your puzzle to offer a refuge from the miseries in the rest of the paper, ELON becomes the last thing your solvers want to think about with their coffee. The ENEMA of the 2020s. With cryptics, at least you can have some fun at the expense of the wretched man. Witness this paper's Vlad: 26ac Joke – of kind – sees Trump getting irritated? (9,4) [ wordplay: anagram ('getting irritated') of KINDSEESTRUMP ] [ definition: a joke of just the kind Vlad describes ] … and enjoy at least the irritation. Likewise, the FT's Leonidas gives us … 28d Reform UK's master? (4) [ wordplay: anagram ('reform') of UKS & M ('master') ] [ definition: whole clue ] … MUSK as an entry but perhaps the most satisfying to imagine appearing on a desk in the White House is the sheer derision of Eccles's Independent clue … 30ac Half of Elon Musk's head is wood (3) [ wordplay: first two letters ('half') of ELON & first letter ('head') of MUSK ] [ definition: wood ] … for ELM. And the scandal that will inevitably be tagged Elongate is taking longer than many of us predicted. Meanwhile in our cluing conference for FRUIT, the runners-up are MannekenPis's cheery 'Benefit of healing union's first rift' and Andyyy1's world-weary 'Initially feeling romantic until it's time for a date, for example'. The winner is the not-unaudacious 'Apple I found in back lawn?' to which I have added a question mark. Mass firings begin as Trump, Musk purge U.S. government
STORY: :: February 11, 2025 MUSK: "So all of our actions are maximally transparent..." As U.S. President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk accelerate their purge of America's federal bureaucracy, mass firings at multiple U.S. government agencies have begun. That's according to union sources and employees who spoke to Reuters. In the past 48 hours, termination emails have been sent to scores of government workers at agencies including the Education Department, Small Business Administration, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, consisting mostly of recently hired employees still on probation. :: February 12, 2025 REPORTER: 'How soon do you want the Department of Education to be closed?' TRUMP: 'Oh, I'd like it to be closed immediately. Look, the Department of Education's a big con job.' The firings come as Trump has tasked Musk and members of his Department of Government Efficiency - or DOGE - to undertake a massive downsizing of the 2.3 million-strong civilian federal workforce and the potential shuttering of entire government agencies. The unprecedented cost-cutting initiative has sown panic among federal workers in the U.S. capital and sparked public protests. :: February 11, 2025 Maryland Senator Angela Alsobrooks: "...for anyone who's wondering, these jobs are not Republican jobs or Democratic jobs. They're American jobs." Trump has pressed ahead despite a barrage of lawsuits from labor unions and Democratic attorneys general According to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, about 75,000 workers have signed up for the buyout so far, which is equal to 3% of the civilian workforce.
