Delivery Orders In Saudi Arabia Surge To 290 Million
Delivery service providers in Saudi Arabia recorded over 290 million orders in 2023, marking a major milestone, according to the Transport General Authority (TGA). Riyadh accounted for the lion's share with a record 45.3 per cent growth, followed by Mecca with 22.7 per cent, the Eastern Province with 15 per cent, and Medina with 4.3 per cent growth. TGA highlighted the growing reliance on smart apps, noting they have become an essential part of daily life in the kingdom. This surge in demand is being met by more than 50 licensed delivery companies operating across Saudi Arabia. The sector has experienced consistent growth, with over 200 million deliveries carried out in 2023 alone. In a major development, drone delivery services are expected to launch in Saudi Arabia later this year. Matternet, a California-based drone delivery company, became the first operator to receive official approval from Saudi civil aviation authorities. Once operational, the service will bring ultra-fast, zero-emission delivery to businesses and residents in Riyadh.

Drone Delivery Service Set To Soar In Saudi Arabia This Year
The drone delivery service is expected to kickstart in Saudi Arabia later this year after a US company has become the first such operator to obtain an official approval to deliver the service in the kingdom. Matternet, a California-based developer of commercial drone delivery systems for urban and suburban environments, said the company has been approved by Saudi authorities to operate its M2 drone there, becoming the first operator to receive such approval. The approval was granted by Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) after the latter determined that the M2's Federal Aviation Administration Type Certification issued by the US met GACA airworthi-ness standards. The company noted that its M2 drone delivery system became the first to achieve FAA Type Certification in September 2022. 'We are proud to have received this acceptance from GACA and are hon-oured that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia recognizes our dedication to safety and operational excellence,' Andreas Raptopoulos, the founder and CEO of Matternet, said in a statement. 'The Middle East is an exciting region for drone delivery and Saudi Arabia represents the largest economy. Riyadh will have autonomous drone deliv-ery as a new layer of city infrastructure, enabling ultra-fast, cost-efficient, zero-emissions delivery for its businesses and residents,' Raptopoulos. In 2021, the company entered the Middle East market through a partner-ship with the Abu Dhabi Department of Health to provide city-wide medical delivery. 'We have seen rapid growth in the development and population of cities such as Riyadh,' Matternet Chief Financial Officer Jason Secore said. 'This will create a greater need for delivery, and lead to mounting pressure on the current infrastructure to keep up with demand. Drone delivery will play a key role in managing these challenges in a timely and scalable man-ner,' he added. The delivery business has thrived in Saudi Arabia in recent years. More than 200 million delivery operations were performed in the kingdom in 2023, according to official figures.

US drone delivery firm Matternet gets nod to operate M2 drone in Saudi Arabia
Matternet, the California-headquartered developer of the world's leading urban drone delivery system, announced that it has received approval to operate its M2 drone in Saudi Arabia. It is the first operator to receive such approval granted by Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), the company said. The approval was granted after GACA found that the M2's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Type Certification issued by the US met the Saudi regulator's airworthiness standards, Matternet said.
