Kaspersky discovers multiple IoT devices targeted with a new Mirai botnet version
Kaspersky Global Research & Analysis Team (GReAT) researchers have found multiple IoT devices targeted with a new version of the Mirai botnet. The majority of attacked devices were located in China, Egypt, India, Brazil, Turkiye and Russia. Mirai remains one of the top threats to IoT in 2025 due to widespread exploitation of weak login credentials and unpatched vulnerabilities, enabling large-scale botnets for DDoS attacks, data theft and other malicious activities. According to Kaspersky research, there were 1.7 billion attacks on IoT devices (including those made with Mirai) coming from 858,520 devices globally in 2024. 45,708 attacks on IoT devices (including those made with Mirai) were launched from UAE in 2024, which is 54% more than in 2023. To explore IoT attacks, how such attacks are carried out and how to prevent them, Kaspersky set up so called honeypots – decoy devices used to attract the attention of the attackers and analyze their activities. In the honeypots Kaspersky detected the exploitation of the CVE-2024-3721 vulnerability to deploy a bot – it turned out to be a Mirai botnet modification. A botnet is a network of compromised devices infected by malware to perform coordinated malicious activities under the control of an attacker. This time, the focus of the attacks were digital video recorders (DVRs) – these devices are integral to security and surveillance across multiple sectors. They record footage from cameras to monitor homes, retail stores, offices and warehouses, as well as factories, airports, train stations and educational institutions, to enhance public safety and secure critical infrastructure. Attacks on DVR devices can compromise privacy, but beyond that, they can serve as entry points for attackers to infiltrate broader networks, spreading malware and creating botnets to launch DDoS attacks, as seen with Mirai. The discovered DVR bot includes mechanisms to detect and evade virtual machine (VM) environments or emulators commonly used by security researchers to analyze malware. These techniques help the bot avoid detection and analysis, allowing it to operate more stealthily and remain active on infected devices. 'The source code of the Mirai botnet was shared on the internet nearly a decade ago, and since then, it has been adapted and modified by various cybercriminal groups to create large-scale botnets mostly focused on DDoS and resource hijacking. Exploiting known security flaws in IoT devices and servers that haven't been patched, along with the widespread use of malware targeting Linux-based systems, leads to a significant number of bots constantly searching the internet for devices to infect. By analyzing public sources we identified over 50,000 exposed DVR devices online, indicating that attackers have numerous opportunities to target unpatched, vulnerable devices,' comments Anderson Leite, Security Researcher with Kaspersky's GReAT. To reduce the risk of IoT device infection, users should: • Change default credentials and use strong, unique passwords. • Regularly update DVR firmware to patch known vulnerabilities. • Disable remote access if unnecessary or use secure VPNs for management. • Segment DVRs on isolated networks. • Monitor for unusual network traffic to detect potential compromises. Toyota Math: 9 Million EVs Are Just as Polluting as 27 Million Hybrids
Akio Toyoda is a man who speaks his mind. He's been saying for years that forcing everyone to buy EVs isn't the way forward. Toyota's chairman is adamant that the transition can't be rushed and that going all-in on electric vehicles would have massive repercussions across the automotive industry. He believes millions of jobs throughout the supply chain could be at risk if the combustion engine is phased out too quickly. On the environmental front, Toyoda maintains that EVs are still much dirtier than hybrids. The grandson of Toyota founder Kiichiro Toyoda claims the company has sold around 27 million hybrids since launching the first-generation Prius in 1997. According to him, those hybrids have had the same carbon footprint as nine million fully electric vehicles. Put another way, a single EV is as dirty as three hybrids. He argues that the gap is even wider when EVs are charged using electricity from thermal power stations reliant on fossil fuels, as is the case in Japan. 'But if we were to have made nine million BEVs in Japan, it would have actually increased the carbon emissions, not reduced them. That is because Japan relies on thermal power plants for electricity.' Proving Naysayers Wrong Toyota's reluctance to fully embrace EVs has sparked criticism, with some even questioning the company's future. You've probably seen comments predicting Toyota's downfall for lagging in the electric race, but that hasn't happened. In fact, the opposite is true. In 2024, Toyota was the world's largest automaker for the fifth year in a row. Sure, its EVs may trail the competition, but Toyota more than makes up for it with its hybrids and the remaining ICE models it still sells. The latest gas-powered car to receive the hybrid treatment is the Aygo X , the firm's smallest model outside of the kei cars, which are sold exclusively in Japan. Toyota claims the dinky hatchback has the lowest CO₂ footprint of any non-plug-in car on the market. Akio Toyoda once said EVs would never exceed a 30% market share and argued that the industry should focus on hybrids and synthetic fuels. Although it has admitted the Mirai has been a commercial failure , Toyota remains committed to hydrogen and sees potential in combining it with combustion engines. At the same time, it's helping BMW launch its first series-production hydrogen vehicle in 2028. Toyota Can Do It All As the automotive powerhouse it is, Toyota has the financial and industrial muscle to improve its hybrids while also developing better EVs. It has made the bZ more appealing and added the bZ Woodland and C-HR to its growing electric lineup. Its luxury brand Lexus recently launched the ES electric sedan and upgraded the RZ. According to a new Bloomberg report, two more EVs are coming to the U.S. by 2027. While the spotlight is on hybrids and EVs, Toyota hasn't forgotten the joy of driving. The company's CEO, Koji Sato, was recently quoted as saying, 'A car is not a car if it's not fun.' In the coming years, expect a new Supra, a revived Celica, and possibly a new MR2, judging by the mid-engine prototype shown earlier this year. Lexus, too, will launch a GT3-style road car, likely with a V-8. All told, Toyota appears to have just about every base covered. The impending return of the FJ Cruiser would further cement Toyota's reputation for offering one of the most comprehensive lineups in the automotive industry. Manoj Manchu breaks silence after brother Vishnu accuses him of involvement in Kannappa hard drive theft
The family feud within the Manchu family has been public for some time. Amid this ongoing rift, actor Vishnu Manchu recently spoke out about the case involving the stolen hard disk from Kannappa. He allegedly suggested that his brother Manoj might be involved, citing past issues between them. Now, the Mirai actor has broken his silence on the matter. What did Manoj Manchu say about the Kannappa theft case? During the success meet of his latest film, Bhairavam, Manoj Manchu was asked about the allegations made by his brother. He appeared hesitant to respond and refrained from giving any direct answers. As quoted by Telugu Cinema, he said, "I don't want to answer that. I still wish the best for Kannappa." What were Vishnu's allegations? While speaking at a promotional event, Vishnu Manchu addressed the issue surrounding the stolen Kannappa hard disk. He explained that the film's VFX work was being carried out across several cities, including Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai, London, and Dubai. The actor shared that a VFX-related hard drive had been sent from Mumbai. As usual, it was delivered to his father Mohan Babu's residence in Film Nagar. He mentioned that all three siblings used the same address for their packages. Their managers typically picked them up from there. According to him, this particular hard disk was handed over to two individuals named Raghu and Charitha. He revealed that both of them have been missing since then. In his words, "You all know what happened within our family. We tried to reach Manoj through our friends, but to no avail. We don't know if they stole it or acted upon someone's orders. It was after these attempts we filed a police complaint." Details about Kannappa hard drive theft case Vishnu revealed that the Kannappa hard disk was secured with a strong password. He estimated that there was only a one percent chance of bypassing the protection. Even if someone managed to leak the footage, he urged the public not to watch it. The theft reportedly occurred in Film Nagar, Hyderabad, about a month before the film's release. Following the incident, his team issued a statement suggesting that the act might have been motivated by sabotage and personal grudges. Meanwhile, the movie, starring Prabhas, Mohanlal, Kajal Aggarwal, Akshay Kumar, and several others, will release on June 27, 2025.
