Dembele explains big changes he's made to put him on road to Ballon d'Or glory

Ousmane Dembele was in danger of failing to realise his potential but has just produced a career-best season as PSG claim Champions League glory - which now has him in the hunt for the Ballon d'Or Ousmane Dembele believes a more professional approach to life has changed his career as the PSG star is tipped to win the Ballon d'Or after proving a leading light for a PSG side that finally won the Champions League. The Frenchman has flourished since leaving Barcelona and a positional switch made him a key cog in Luis Enrique 's all-conquering team. Dembele's numbers skyrocketed, especially post-Christmas, as the 28-year-old went on to score 33 times. ‌ His exploits on the European stage have put him in pole position to claim football's most sought after individual prize. Dembele has long been tipped for big things but had struggled to realise his potential at Barcelona and, before that, Borussia Dortmund. ‌ Now the forward has confessed that a mindset shift really helped him with his approach to fitness and recovery allowing him to reach new heights - which is in stark contrast to his attitude previously. He told France Football, via Mundo Deportivo: "Now I'm a little more professional. I was already professional, but now I'm even more so. Now, even on my days off, I like to go to the training centre, recover, work with the physios. Before, I would go home, play NBA 2K, watch a bit of TV. I was also younger, it's normal. "But, in the end, you pay a high price, and I saw that especially at Barcelona . I arrived there young, I played from 20 to 26, and I had a lot of physical problems. I learned a lot, and it helped me. Now I know my body much better, and that's why I get injured less. I know when I'm good, but also when I need to slow down, pace myself in training." Dembele has been installed among those most likely to claim the Ballon d'Or. Often the player who lands the award has claimed one of the major trophies that year, which is why the PSG star is the hunt alongside the likes of Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal. "To begin with, I hope to be among the 30 nominees", he told France Football about his own chances of winning the Ballon d'Or. "I have had difficult years with injuries, poor performances as well. This season I think I have been consistent, so we will see what happens. ‌ "It would already be exceptional to have my name on the list. And being one of the favourites is already a great victory, although I hope to win it someday." The last Frenchman to win the Ballon d'Or was Karim Benzema, who did so back in 2022. Lionel Messi is the only player from PSG to have claimed the gong.

PSG forward Dembele chasing the ‘holy grail' of Ballon d'Or

PA Media/dpa London Champions League winner Ousmane Dembele is chasing the 'holy grail' of the Ballon d'Or. The forward's performances were integral to Paris Saint-Germain's inaugural triumph in Europe's premier club competition but having conquered that challenge, the 28-year-old is looking to emulate his idol and former Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi. 'Winning a Ballon d'Or when you're a footballer is obviously the holy grail on an individual level. It's something you dream of as a child,' Dembele, who said he 'hoped to be among 30 nominees', told France Football. 'I've had difficult years with injuries, weak performances as well. This season I think I've been consistent, so we'll see what happens. 'It would be exceptional to have my name on the list and to be one of the favourites is already a great victory, although I hope to win it one day.' For a long time Dembele was criticized for not fulfilling his potential and his spell in Barcelona was seen as a major disappointment, albeit affected by injury. However, as he has matured, he has realized he had to change his lifestyle. 'I was already a professional, but now I am a little more so. Now, even on rest days, I like to go to the training centre, recover, work with the physios,' he added ahead of PSG's Club World Cup opener against Atletico Madrid in Pasedena. 'Before, I would go home, play NBA 2K, watch a little TV. I was also younger, it's normal. But, in the end, you pay dearly, and I saw it - especially in Barcelona. 'I arrived there young. I played from 20 to 26 years old, I had a lot of physical problems. I learned a lot. Now I know my body much better and that's why I get injured less.' Dembele is unlikely to feature in the opening game as he was injured in France's Nations League semi-final against Spain and is currently training individually. PSG are favourites to win the game but Atleti will not be concerned by their underdog status. 'We know PSG's quality; they've shown it this year, but we compete against anyone and we're going to compete,' defender Robin Le Normand told reporters. 'It's part of our heritage and our game. We struggle, but we know how to do it.'

OKC Thunder rally to beat Indiana Pacers, level NBA Finals at 2-2

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander shoots the ball against the Indiana Pacers during the first half of Game 4 of the NBA Finals. PHOTO: REUTERS INDIANAPOLIS – Shai Gilgeous-Alexander said that it was a 'dog fight' as his Oklahoma City Thunder side rallied for a gritty 111-104 road victory over the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Finals on June 13. The point guard scored 15 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter, helping his team level the best-of-seven series at two games apiece. Frustrated for much of the game by Indiana's relentless defence, NBA Most Valuable Player Gilgeous-Alexander found a way to fight through. He followed a three-pointer with a pull-up jumper to give the Thunder their first lead since the first half with 2min 23sec remaining. They did not trail again, with their star man adding six free throws in the final 44 seconds. 'It's a dog fight,' Gilgeous-Alexander said after another intense, physical battle between the two teams. 'Every time you step on the floor, on both ends of the floor they make you work.' Jalen Williams added 27 points, Chet Holmgren added 14 points and 15 rebunds and Alex Caruso chipped in 20 points off the bench for the Thunder. Pascal Siakam scored 20 points to lead Indiana, adding eight, rebounds, five assists and five steals. Tyrese Haliburton scored 18 points and Obi Toppin added 17 off the bench and the Pacers led by 10 late in the third quarter. But Oklahoma City – who have yet to drop back-to-back games in the play-offs – clamped down defensively in the fourth, determined not to fall in a 3-1 hole. 'We knew it when we woke up this morning – 3-1 is a lot different than 2-2 going back home,' Gilgeous-Alexander added. 'We played with desperation to the end the game and that's why we won.' He also said the Thunder must 'maintain the same desperation' when they host Game 5 on June 16. One aspect they must improve in is their three-point shooting. Oklahoma City were 34 of 38 (89.5 per cent) at the line but were just three of 17 (17.6 per cent) on three-point tries. The Thunder had not hit fewer than seven three-pointers in any game during the 2024-25 regular season or post-season. Meanwhile, Pacers coach Rick Carlisle did not hide his disappointment after the loss. 'An inability to get key rebounds, an inability to get stops was part of it, and we got stagnant,' he said. 'But give them credit. They kept attacking, kept attacking, and their defence was great down the stretch. This was a big disappointment. But there's three games left.'
