Texas DPS: 6 apprehended after pursuit near UTEP

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Six people were apprehended after a failed traffic stop ended in a pursuit involving the Texas Department of Public Safety troopers on Tuesday morning, May 27, near the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). The preliminary investigation shows that shortly after 9 a.m. on Tuesday, a Texas DPS trooper spotted a black Nissan Versa on Paisano Drive and tried to pull it over for a violation. However, the driver didn't stop and fled from the trooper, DPS said. During the pursuit, the rear tire was disabled with stop sticks, but the car continued toward Loop 375, DPS said. DPS said another trooper used the Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT), causing the car to hit a concrete barrier before stopping on Loop 375 near Spur 1966. That's alongside UTEP. All occupants were apprehended. The driver was taken into custody by DPS, and U.S. Border Patrol took the five other passengers, suspected to be undocumented migrants, DPS said. The investigation is ongoing. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Sebi issues Rs 2.1 cr demand notice to absconding diamantaire Mehul Choksi

Markets regulator Sebi has sent a notice to absconding diamantaire Mehul Choksi asking him to pay Rs 2.1 crore in a case of violation of insider trading rules in the shares of Gitanjali Gems Ltd and warned of attachment of assets as well as bank accounts if he fails to make the payment within 15 days. The demand notice came after Choksi failed to pay the fine imposed by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) in January 2022. Choksi, who was the chairman and managing director as well as part of promoter group of Gitanjali Gems, is the maternal uncle of Nirav Modi . Both are facing charges of defrauding state-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) of more than Rs 14,000 crore. Choksi and Modi fled India after the PNB scam came to light in early 2018. Last month, Choksi was arrested in Belgium following an extradition request by Indian probe agencies. He was located in Belgium last year when he went there on the grounds of getting medical treatment. He had been staying in Antigua since 2018 after leaving India. In a fresh recovery notice dated May 15, the Securities and Exchanges Board of India (Sebi) directed Choksi to pay Rs 2.1 crore within 15 days. This included a penalty of Rs 1.5 crore and an interest of Rs 60 lakh. In the event of non-payment of dues, the market regulator said it will recover the amount by attaching and selling his moveable and immovable properties. Besides, Choksi faces attachment of his bank accounts and arrest. Live Events In its order passed in January 2022, the regulator imposed a penalty of Rs 1.5 crore on Choksi and restrained him from the securities market for one year. Sebi had found that Choksi communicated UPSI to one Rakesh Girdharlal Gajera, who sold his entire shareholding of 5.75 per cent in Gitanjali Gems in December 2017 with the intention of avoiding loss ahead of any event which may lead to disclosure of fraudulent issuance of LoUs (letter of undertaking)to Gitanjali Group and its magnitude in public domain. It was noted that fraudulent LOUs were issued on behalf of entities belonging to the Gitanjali Group, including GGL. "Noticee no. 1 (Choksi) was found to have communicated UPSI (unpublished price sensitive information) to Noticee no. 2 (Gajera) without any underlying legal obligation or any legitimate purpose," Sebi had said in its final order. Through such activities, the two persons had violated the provisions of PIT (Prohibition of Insider Trading) rules. In May 2023, Sebi had sent a notice to Choksi directing him to pay Rs 5.35 crore in a case pertaining to fraudulent trading in the shares of Gitanjali Gems.

Georgia trooper hurt in crash while assisting Waycross police during pursuit

A Georgia State Patrol trooper was injured in a crash Wednesday night while he was assisting the Waycross Police Department in a pursuit. GSP said Waycross officers were trying to stop a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Tracy Hilliard, 47, on Swamp Road near Gilmore Drive. GSP said Trooper First Class Justin Jones 'became the primary position in the pursuit' and worked to disable Hilliard's vehicle with a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver. Jones' patrol car and the Tahoe both left the road, and the patrol car ended up 'overturned and partially submerged in a canal,' GSP said. Hilliard's vehicle ended up on top of Jones' patrol car, and Jones had to be rescued from the car by WPD officers. [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] The Waycross-Ware County Development Authority said in a Facebook post that Jones was airlifted to Memorial Trauma Center in Savannah. 'As a community, we stand in support of Trooper Jones and his loved ones during this difficult time. We're all wishing him strength, healing, and a full recovery,' the Authority said in its Facebook post. GSP said Jones expects to be released from the hospital soon. Homelessness increased in Northeast TN, according to 2025 PIT Count

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – In January, the annual Point in Time (PIT) count surveyed the number of unhoused people in Northeast Tennessee. Now, the results are in and show homelessness has nearly tripled since 2020. In 2020, the PIT count found nearly 400 people without housing. This year, the number is over 900. The annual survey is required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in order for organizations and local governments to receive federal funding to combat homelessness. Volunteers and social service agency members spend a night finding unhoused individuals and interviewing them to try and analyze trends. PREVIOUS: Northeast Tennessee PIT Count organizer discusses importance of taking census on homelessness Opal Frye-Clark is the President of the Unity Housing board. She believes there are more unhoused people than the survey found. 'This is a snapshot within a 24-hour period of time that you go out into the community, and you try to physically count the number of individuals experiencing homelessness,' said Frye-Clark. 'While there was a specific number that yielded results from this year, it doesn't necessarily encompass everybody that's experiencing homelessness.' Terry Burdett is the Homeless Management Information Systems Manager at the Appalachian Regional Coalition on Homelessness (ARCH). He said there are multiple reasons the number has increased, including rent hikes. 'We have an affordable rental housing problem, and our older folks that are on fixed incomes, they're struggling in our communities,' said Burdett. 'I'm not saying that we've got this huge increase on elderly homeless, but our demographics are aging just a little bit every year.' In Johnson City, rent has increased from 12% to over 17%, according to the 2025 Housing Needs Assessment. Report details changes in Johnson City housing Burdett also noted that 10% of the respondents said they are homeless due to Hurricane Helene. Both Frye-Clark and Burdett said the public can help by donating or volunteering at local homeless assistance centers and shelters. 'If you're going to get involved, I would check out the organizations that are already doing things,' Frye-Clark said. 'Support your local government in making decisions to increase the amount of housing opportunities for local individuals in the area.' 'A lot of our grants help with rental assistance,' said Burdett, 'but then we have the issues with 'how about kitchenware?', you know, dining stuff, a bed to sleep on, a couch to sit on. So those are things that are difficult to pay with the grants, but funding outside the grants system can help us.' The PIT count also showed an increase in unhoused people with severe mental health and substance abuse issues. 40% of those surveyed struggled with one or both of those factors. Burdett said he thinks there is no reason to believe these solely contribute to homelessness. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Bad news for Mukesh Ambani as SAT rejects Reliance plea against...., may have to face penalty of...

Bad news for Mukesh Ambani as SAT rejects Reliance please against.... In a big worry for Mukesh Ambani, the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) dismissed Reliance Industries' appeal against a Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) order imposing a Rs 30 lakh penalty for violating Prohibition of Insider Trading (PIT) Regulations. In its June 2022 adjudicating order, SEBI found RIL in breach of PIT Regulations for failing to disclose details of a potential investment deal with Facebook in Jio Platforms promptly. 'We find the appellants in violation of Principle 4, Schedule A of the PIT Regulations and uphold the SEBI order,' said the SAT bench, presided over by Justice P S Dinesh Kumar. What is the case? The case relates to a confidentiality and non-disclosure agreement signed between RIL and Facebook in September 2019, followed by a non-binding term sheet on March 4, 2020, for Facebook's investment in Jio Platforms. Legal experts said that while the monetary penalty in this case was just Rs 30 lakh, the SAT judgement could set a precedent for companies on handling news leaks and disclosures. On March 24, 2020, the Financial Times newspaper reported that Facebook was nearing a deal to acquire a 10 per cent stake in Jio. Domestic media also followed up the news report, triggering a 15 per cent surge in RIL's share price. RIL formally disclosed the Jio-Facebook deal to stock exchanges only on April 22, 2020, after executing a definitive transaction document, prompting another 10 per cent jump in its stock price.
