What is 'Holy Airball'? Viral Trend Explained
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Tried to shoot your shot and missed? Holy Airball. The trend is currently sweeping social media, with videos amassing millions of views and celebrities and influencers jumping on the trend. But what does it actually mean? Newsweek breaks it down. The Context 'Holy Airball,' is a slang term and meme originally used to show that someone has failed at taking a "shot," at someone. The term "airball," is used in basketball when someone has taken a shot that doesn't hit the net, rim or backboard. A basketball bounces off the backboard March 23, 2025 in Lexington, Kentucky. A basketball bounces off the backboard March 23, 2025 in Lexington, from terms like 'Holy Cow,' it's used to denote that someone has gotten something wrong, often a characteristic about a person, thereby missing their shot. What We Know The trend is currently sweeping social media, with videos amassing millions of likes and views. The videos are set to the song Soul Survivor by Young Jeezy ft. Akon. The videos often feature a statement or question that is some kind of misconception, followed by the creator sharing the truth. The actress Drew Barrymore recently jumped on the trend, in a video which has been viewed 1.7 million times as of reporting. The video starts with the text overlay, "Told them I started acting when I was very young!", and then reads "Like since you were a kid?" before cutting to a clip of Barrymore as a baby with the text 'Holyfreakingairball.' The influencer Haleyy Baylee has also jumped on the trend. Her video, which has been viewed 2.8 million times as of reporting, has the text overlay "told him I'm an influencer," followed by "oh so you do like little fashion vlogs & stuff?" before cutting to a clip of Baylee behaving strangely and wearing multiple costumes for content. Newsweek spoke to the content creator and model, Scarlet Martin, who goes by the handle scarletmartin_ about her take on the trend. Her video, which has been viewed 50,000 times on TikTok as of reporting starts with the text overlay, "Told him I have a horse... 'What, like a thoroughbred?'". The video then cuts to a clip of a Welsh pony, with the 'holyairball,' hashtag. "My take on the trend is resorting back to my true love and passion in life – horses," she told Newsweek over email. "But more specifically, my horse; Ringo. He is a gorgeous, but scruffy and overly cute little Welsh pony stallion. I am definitely expected to have a big fancy, super expensive horse – but in reality, I have Ringo, who in turn – I wouldn't trade for the world," she said. Other creators have used their videos to highlight or poke fun at gender stereotypes. Maya and Hunter, a married couple who create content together posted their take on the video, which included a picture of Hunter at a graduation, with the text "Told them I went to law school." The next picture had the text overlay "oh he's probably the breadwinner." The final picture showed Maya working and Hunter next to her, doing housework. The creator Hadley took a similar approach in a video which has been viewed over 9 million times. "I told him I was really into law," the text reads, then "he said 'oh do you watch suits or something?'" with the clip then cutting to Hadley speaking in a professional setting. What People Are Saying Alexia Sotomayor, the professional swimmer, in a TikTok video viewed 3.7 million times as of reporting: "told him i'm a swimmer, he said 'i used to swim in the summer, i can probably beat you,'" with the clip then cutting to Sotomayor swimming professionally, with the text overlay, "Alexia Sotomayor readies for world champs." The TikToker, Olivia Minor in a video viewed 12 million times as of reporting: "I told him my room gets really messy, he said 'yeah i don't make my bed either,'" with the TikTok then cutting to a clip of a messy bedroom. What's Next Though the trend has quickly captured the internet's attention, whether or not it will be able to hold remains to be seen.

Cats keep disappearing from a Welsh village and devastated owners spot a pattern
Cats keep disappearing from a Welsh village and devastated owners spot a pattern Police are now investigating and owners have been urged to stay alert 13-year-old Sammy with his cat Ringo (Image: Craig Beckerleg ) Cat owners in a Welsh village have been urged to stay alert after an unusual number of cats have gone missing . Around 10 cats have disappeared from Newtown in the past year, with most cases reported in recent months. Local councillor Kelly Healy has noticed that there has become a pattern in the Garth Owen area of the Powys village. Although most cats have not been found, several have turned up in locations far away from the area from Shropshire to Aberystwyth. Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed they are making enquiries to determine whether any offences have taken place. Powys Animal Welfare has also been contacted by concerned owners across the area. For 13-year-old Sammy Beckerleg, the disappearance of his cat Ringo still feels raw. 'It was like any other day,' he said. 'I had come back from my mum's and was at my dad's. I immediately asked where Ringo was and he said Ringo had been out since last night. I was concerned, but I knew Ringo always came back.' But this time, Ringo didn't return. Article continues below 'It felt really hard without him coming into my room,' Sammy said. 'I missed his meows, him coming into my room - just everything about him really.' It wasn't until two months later, just before Christmas, that Sammy's dad had got the news to say Ringo had been found in Shrewsbury by a cat rescue charity in Shrewsbury. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here 'I started crying of happiness as soon as I heard him say that,' he said. 'The next day, I went to see him. I was so, so happy that he was alive and okay.' Ringo was away for six weeks altogether. Craig Beckerleg added: 'We had CCTV of him on the 17th October and that was the last we'd seen of him until 23rd December. 'We do think someone is taking them but we've reported the issue so will just have to see what happens. 'It was really difficult when Ringo went missing and it was especially hard for Sammy. 'Thankfully Ringo's behaviour is the exact same. He was a bit timid for the first week or so but he's so friendly and seems ok. 'But we also think because he was crying so much trying to find out where we were as he's not got the same, loud meow.' Discussing the issue, Kelly Healy said: 'It's been really upsetting for people in the area. 'There is one lady who has lost three cats from the same household and says she couldn't get another one now because of what's been happening. 'I've never heard of anything like this happening around here, and I ran a cat rescue for seven years and we never had cats vanish like this. 'We saw dreadful things but no weird stuff like this.' Kelly is urging people in the community to remain extra cautious at this time, noting: 'Definitely microchip your cats, and make sure they are neutered as this can stop them from sometimes wandering off. 'And if you've lost a cat, contact me.' Article continues below A spokesperson for Dydfed Powys Police told WalesOnline: ''We have received two reports raising concerns about missing cats in the Garth Owen area of Newtown. 'Enquiries are ongoing to establish if a criminal offence has occurred.'

'He played the drums for me': Barry Keoghan has been studying Ringo's technique up close
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Barry Keoghan, the actor who is set to play Ringo in Sam Mendes' forthcoming set of Beatles biopics, has revealed that he met the man himself and has seen his drumming technique up close. Appearing on the Jimmy Kimmel Show, Keoghan – looking impossibly boyish, even at 32 - talked about the encounter. 'I met him at his house and he played the drums for me. He asked me to play but I wasn't playing the drums for Ringo.' The actor intimated that he was just too nervous. So nervous, in fact, that he even couldn't look Ringo in the eye. 'It was one of those moments when you're in awe,' Keoghan said. '(I) just froze.' Inevitably, being an actor and aware of the huge role that he has coming up, Keoghan was observing the 84-year-old Beatle and inwardly absorbing. 'I was and I said that to him. My job is to observe and take in the mannerisms and study him. But I want to humanise him and bring feelings to it, not just imitate. 'But he was just lovely,' Keoghan told Kimmel. '(We) just sat in the garden chatting away.' Keoghan was the first of Mendes's fab four to be cast. Indeed, Ringo himself broke the news last year, saying of Keoghan to Entertainment Tonight: 'I believe he's somewhere taking drum lessons, and I hope not too many.' The other actors were confirmed last month at the CinemaCon event in Las Vegas. Paul Mescal, who starred in Gladiator II and All Of Us Strangers is yer man McCartney; Joseph Quinn, who you might have seen in Stranger Things, is George; and Harris Dickinson follows in a long line of actors who've played John Lennon. All four movies are all currently pencilled in for April 2028. "I just felt the story of the band was too huge to fit into a single movie, and that turning it into a TV mini-series just somehow didn't feel right,' offered Mendes at CinemaCon as an explanation for the one-film-per-Beatle gambit. "Each one is told from the particular perspective of just one of the guys. They intersect in different ways - sometimes overlapping, sometimes not. They're four very different human beings. Perhaps this is a chance to understand them a little more deeply. But together, all four films will tell the story of the greatest band in history."

Overnight parking at a popular East Lothian beauty spot to be removed
Overnight parking at a popular East Lothian beauty spot will be removed after councillors admitted they did not have the resources to stop it being abused. The three spaces at Shore Road, Belhaven, brought in over £3,500 in revenue for East Lothian Council last year but also sparked a wave of complaints from local residents who said visitors urinated in public and left their sewage and litter behind them. A meeting of East Lothian Council's Labour administration cabinet today approved a proposal to remove the bays with council leader Norman Hampshire saying the local authority would continue to look for alternative places for motor homes to stop.. The bays were introduced two years ago alongside three overnight bays at Yellowcraig car park near North Berwick as a trial. The Yellowcraig bays will remain and be made permanent. Councillor Hampshire said the views of the local community in Belhaven had been listened to by the local authority. He said: 'Although Shore Road is a very popular site, we don't have the facilities or staff to manage it when somebody is abusing the site, so for that reason we can't continue there.' Mr Hampshire pointed out there is a private caravan site a short distance from Shore Road which was available to visitors. However, he added: 'I agree there is a need for more. The number of camper vans visiting our coastal areas is greatly increasing and it would be wrong of us to say we don't want camper vans. We need to accommodate them either as the council ourselves as a landowner or there may be some private landowners who may wish to accommodate them.' Councillors also agreed to make permanent an overnight ban on parking across all coastal car parks between the hours of 11pm and 4am. Initial plans to bar parking from 10pm to 6am were reduced after protests from early morning swimmers, dog walkers and photographers who use it at dusk and dawn. Anger over the impact of the Shore Road overnight bays has had on residents living in the area was compounded, local community councils said by the lack of 'policing' of the site. In their objections they said promises the situation would be reviewed after a 'summer trial' were not met by the council and claims the bays would be monitored by a pre-booking system did not happen with people paying the £10 nightly charge through the Ringo app or at cash machines onsite. Several residents claimed up to ten motor homes could be found in the car park on any given night with people also parking in cars and vans. One said: 'I have witnessed people using the dunes as a toilet, lots of different rubbish being left and barbecues being lit in the long grass/dunes even when signs are up saying not to in dry weather.' Another added: 'They are arriving at all hours and some of them are not self-sufficient as in having toilets in them, so can imagine they are doing the toilet in surrounding grass area. 'There is no one around to police the camper vans and they seem to do as they like.' By Marie Sharp Local Democracy Reporter Like this: Like Related
