Alexander Skarsgard channels Robocop in this goofy satire about a murderous cyborg

Murderbot ★★★½ Pulpy and irreverent, Murderbot is a mash-up of science-fiction philosophy, creature feature action, and existential anxiety. Guided by the dry, not-quite-human tone of its protagonist – a rogue cyborg played by Alexander Skarsgard that has acquired free will and unironically renamed itself Murderbot – this sly and sometimes subversive series feels like a mix of Robocop and an old adventure serial, complete with cliffhangers and 25-minute episodes. If you had to label its goofy, satiric style I'd opt for Philip K. Dick-head. The show is set in a galaxy-spanning future, where Murderbot is hired out as a SecUnit (security unit) on mining stations and exploratory expeditions. Hacking his programming should have been a triumph, but Murderbot can't do anything to draw attention to their freedom lest its owners immediately recycle their mix of machine parts and human flesh. The best it can do is covertly watch downloaded space soaps such as The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon (which we briefly see) and try to avoid eye contact with nearby humans. Adapted from the first novel in Martha Wells' The Murderbot Diaries series, this show never sprawls. Once Murderbot arrives on an unsettled alien planet with a group of 'hippie scientists', each episode presents a new challenge in keeping the naive clients alive and its lack of safety constraints hidden. But the longer they spend together, the closer some of the scientists grow to Murderbot. Leader Mensah (Noma Dumezweni) is thoughtful, but Ratthi (Akshay Khanna) just wants to flex about being friends with a SecUnit. Loading The show's creators, filmmaker siblings Paul and Chris Weitz, have various credits that span the original American Pie to The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Rogue One. Their versatility has kept them busy but never flourishing, yet the mordant momentum appears to suit them. Skarsgard is definitely right at home. The actor has always tried to dodge his leading-man looks by playing sociopaths or goofballs, so a self-deprecating killing machine with an unmoving face feels like a natural progression.

‘Is AI rebellion in the room': Humanoid robot turns violent, attacks factory workers in eerie video

In what looked like a scene straight out of a dystopian sci-fi film, a humanoid robot recently malfunctioned at a factory in China, unleashing chaos and alarming onlookers, reported FOX News. The moment was captured in eerie footage that quickly went viral, drawing over 100,000 views on X and sparking widespread online debate. The incident took place at a factory in China.(X/@AI_Archive_) The incident occurred at an undisclosed factory where the robot, suspended from a construction crane, suddenly began flailing its limbs violently while two men nearby looked on in confusion and alarm. The footage, reported by Jam Press, shows the robot thrashing about erratically, resembling a rejected prototype from a 'Robocop' film. Also read: Rare predator caught on camera: Snow leopard casually strolls past stunned tourists in Spiti Valley As the scene unfolded, the robot lurched forward, swinging wildly and dragging its stand along the factory floor. The men scrambled to avoid being struck by the flailing machine. In the midst of the chaos, the robot toppled to the ground, knocking several items off a nearby table. The clip ends with one of the men cautiously repositioning the machine's stand in an effort to regain control. The internet was quick to draw comparisons to classic robot rebellion narratives. 'This is what the machine uprising might look like,' wrote a user in their caption of the video. Take a look at the video: 'Went full terminator,' said one user, while another ominously commented, 'Sarah Connor was f–king right.' One viewer even linked the unsettling event to growing concerns in medical technology: 'This is what worries me about robotic surgery,' they wrote, pointing to the increasing presence of robotic systems in operating rooms. This alarming episode comes at a time when humanoid robots are being integrated more deeply into daily life. Earlier this year, Chinese tech firm Pudu Robotics introduced the D9, a robot capable of walking at 4.5 mph, climbing stairs, and maintaining balance when pushed — features that mirror human behaviour more closely than ever. Though intended to perform helpful tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and chatting, many viewers found the bot's lifelike appearance disturbing. Described by some as 'dystopian' and 'terrifying', these increasingly sophisticated machines are pushing the boundaries of what robotics can do and prompting new questions about where we're headed.

'I met the robots that could replace human Amazon workers - one thing surprised me'

Getting up close to Amazon's latest hi-tech robot, you're struck by how scarily slick it is. I was among a select group of journalists chosen to see the firm's Vulcan project unveiled. It's certainly no walking talking Robocop kind of machine from the movies. But that shouldn't take away from the cleverness of the gadgetry, that draws in technology developed by NASA. Amazon is no stranger to using robots - it's got more than 750,000 busy working away. But what's different about this one is its dexterity, or sense of feeling and touch. Watching Vulcan in action is mesmerising, the way its arm delves into totes for pick out different size products, using suction, then twists, turns and drops them onto a belt. But what's also striking is the role that humans play. No longer dashing around, the ones I saw - both here and elsewhere - seemed relegated to feeding the machines and stepping in if needed. But then this is where much of the technology, including artificial intelligence is heading. Humans tasked with overseeing tech that has done countless others out of a job. For all Amazon's claims that the robots will create as many jobs as they will costs, the reality is surely a world where it needs fewer people. Why employ an army of workers when they want paying, go off sick, complain, even want to join a union? And where Amazon leads, others follow. The same technology could be used by other firms, with the potential to take out whole swathes of often already low paid warehouse workers. And it doesn't stop there. In another vast hall at Amazon's test centre was a hulking machine destined for smaller - yet still gigantic by most standards - depots, from which products are dispatched to customers. Again, it was all about the automation, with workers feeding products into the machine. And just where will this all end? With Amazon preparing to launch drone deliveries from Darlington by the end of the year - cutting out couriers - you have to wonder how big a part humans will play in Amazon's plans. Not that you'd have thought so, listening to its bigwigs who were on hand to explain the new technology. Maybe it's the firm's American culture, but it's not just the machinery on show that can come across as robotic. Does any of this really matter, given the incredible success of Amazon and its awesome power? It's certainly true that the company has revolutionaised retailing, and given people access to a mind-boggling array of products - more than 400 million I learned. And its already speedy deliveries for Prime member are about to get faster. It is extending the number of cities where members can order by 6.15pm to get items the same day. Amazon dismisses talk of a worker-free warehouses, ran entirely by robots and other machines. But the company is equally unwilling to talk of what it might have up its sleeve in five, let along 10 years, from now. Robots with a human-like sense of touch would have been unthinkable in Amazon's world just five years ago. Five years from now and who know what you'll be able to get from Amazon, or how it will be delivered.
