Christian McCaffrey 'as healthy as can be,' says 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan from OTAs

Perhaps the best news out of San Francisco 49ers' OTAs is head coach Kyle Shanahan saying running back Christian McCaffrey is "as healthy as can be." McCaffrey, soon to turn 29, was limited to only four games last season due to Achilles tendinitis in both ankles and a right knee injury that prevented him from making any explosive movement or cuts. He rushed for 202 yards with no touchdowns, averaging four yards per carry. Advertisement Videos from the 49ers' workouts in Santa Clara showed McCaffrey making sharp cuts and showing burst out of them, which had everyone excited that the eight-year veteran is fully recovered and healthy going into the 2025-26 season. McCaffrey is two seasons removed from a career-high and NFL-leading 1,459 yards rushing and 14 TDs, with another 564 yards and seven scores on 67 catches. That earned him NFL Offensive Player of the Year, along with being named first-team All-Pro and his third Pro Bowl honor. He signed a two-year, $38 million extension last June, keeping him under contract through 2027. As could be expected, the 49ers' rushing attack was impacted significantly by McCaffrey's absence. The team ranked 12th in the NFL last season with 2,163 yards and 17 TDs, averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Compare that to 2023, when San Francisco ranked third with 2,389 yards and 27 scores, bolstered by McCaffrey's league-leading total. Advertisement Jordan Mason was the 49ers' leading rusher last season with 789 yards and was limited by ankle and shoulder injuries. But he signed with the Minnesota Vikings in free agency. That leaves Isaac Guerendo as San Francisco's top returning rusher with 420 yards. Yet he also struggled with knee and ankle issues. McCaffrey looking recovered and healthy should be especially encouraging for the 49ers, as the running back could miss some of training camp while on paternity leave. But that gives Guerendo, fifth-round pick Jordan James and undrafted free agent Corey Kiner opportunities to get some snaps and prepare to make contributions.

2025 Mini Countryman S: What's It Like to Live With?

Why did we get it? We have a habit of taking on Minis here at Edmunds. Not too long ago we added a similarly green Mini Cooper S to our garage. A lot more of Mini's legacy rode on the shoulders of that car because of its more traditional size and shape, and frankly, there was only the faintest whiff of that old magic in that car's bones. But the question here is largely the same. Does Mini still have the juice? The entire lineup has been reborn since then — all Cooper and Countryman models are new. So does the Countryman offer an exciting, more whimsical alternative to the bland malaise of two-row crossovers you see everywhere? Is it the antidote to the relentless slog of boring, uninspired, bad-to-drive, not-so-cute utes that have taken over our roads? A year of evaluation is going to help us figure out that and much, much more. What's happened so far? We've spent a lot of time behind the wheel of our Mini already. A round-trip drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco and back revealed a lot about its credentials as a long-distance cruiser (and just how fuel-efficient it can be). We also already need to take it in for a service. Look for updates about all that (and more) in the coming months. Something tells us it's going to be an interesting year.

San Francisco Leader Faces Recall After Drivers Lost Their Great Highway

An elected leader in San Francisco will face a recall for helping to turn a major thoroughfare into a beachside park, a move that some voters consider a grievous mistake. The city's Department of Elections announced on Thursday that an attempt to oust Supervisor Joel Engardio from office had qualified for the ballot, and that a special election would be held on Sept. 16. Forget party politics. Mr. Engardio fell victim to park politics in a city that remains fiercely divided over the shutting down of the Great Highway and its conversion into a coastal playground known as Sunset Dunes this year. The park won rave reviews from visitors who run along the Pacific Ocean and lounge in hammocks there. But it angered residents who relied on the roadway to shave time, and others who said that neighborhood streets were now clogged with would-be Great Highway drivers. Those detractors now want to remove Mr. Engardio because he led the park conversion effort. It marks San Francisco's third recall election in less than four years, the latest sign of a restless electorate that remains dissatisfied with its city leaders over quality-of-life issues. Mr. Engardio is one of 11 members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, which is akin to a city council. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Pair charged in series of San Francisco cold case homicides

The San Francisco District Attorney's office announced Thursday two people are facing murder charges in connection with a series of deadly shootings dating back to 2002. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said 44-year-old Sauntek Harris, also known as Sauntek Kincaid, and 48-year-old Shaun Britton made their first court appearance on Wednesday in connection with the shootings, which took place in 2002 and in 2019. Harris has been charged with four counts of murder, that the crimes constitute street terrorism, along with multiple special circumstances that the murders were committed for a criminal street gang. Prosecutors said Harris was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Britton is charged with one count of murder, that the murder was committed for a criminal street gang and that the crime constituted street terrorism. Prosecutors said Harris and Britton are accused of killing Perry Bradstreet on Jan. 18, 2002. According to police, Bradstreet was robbed, carjacked and fatally shot as he ran away. The suspects then proceeded to set his car on fire before it was found abandoned at the Oakdale Housing project. Harris is accused in the Feb. 24, 2002 killing of Lorenzo Richards at an apartment complex on George Court. The criminal complaint also alleges that Harris killed Gerald White on July 28, 2002. Prosecutors said the victim was a witness to a crime and that he was killed to prevent him from testifying in a case. Harris is also accused in the Aug. 10, 2019 deadly shooting of Dietrich Whitley. Prosecutors allege that Harris committed the shooting while lying in wait. Prosecutors said Harris had prior felony convictions in San Francisco dating back to 2004. Both men remain in custody, prosecutors said. An arraignment for Harris and Britton is scheduled for June 6.
