Why Rayan Ait-Nouri is perfect for Manchester City
Rayan Ait-Nouri will become the first specialist left-back at Manchester City since Joao Cancelo and now has the opportunity to further develop his undoubted talent. The Algeria international has signed a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium after the clubs agreed a deal worth £35 million. He becomes City's first major signing of the summer, with AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders also set to join. Both are available for the upcoming Club World Cup later this month. Ait-Nouri is an introvert off the field and an extrovert on it, possessing a sublime ability to carry the ball which evokes comparisons with Riyad Mahrez, a former City player and team-mate in the Algerian national team. His improvement over the last 18 months, particularly from a defensive point of view, suggests that he could be the perfect fit for Pep Guardiola. Manchester City have trailed him for at least three transfer windows. Liverpool also scouted him frequently before opting to target Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez this summer. Ait-Nouri's metrics are higher than Kerkez, however, and the 24-year-old will now have the stage to flourish. Despite his age, it does feel like he has been at Wolves for a very long time. He joined them almost five years ago, initially on loan, and it seems like a trick of the imagination that managers such as Nuno Espirito Santo and Julen Lopetegui were never convinced. It has been his emergence under first Gary O'Neil and then Vitor Pereira that has elevated his reputation and ultimately landed him the chance to play for Guardiola. 'I am incredibly happy and honoured to have joined Manchester City. City are one of the biggest clubs in the world and the chance to play for the club is a dream come true,' Ait-Nouri said. 'I am also so excited about working with and learning from Pep (Guardiola) and his coaching team and getting to train and play alongside such a world class group of players. 'I'm young and I came here to improve a lot. I need to learn and improve my football for sure - it's why I chose this big challenge. 'I know I can improve my football and being in these kind of conditions with this team and this manager, for sure I will improve my football.' Learn more about our first summer signing! ✨ — Manchester City (@ManCity) June 9, 2025 Though he will play primarily as a left-back at the Etihad, Ait-Nouri comes alive with the ball at his feet in attacking positions. He is an exciting performer who possesses skill and trickery, so the challenge of becoming Guardiola's inverted full-back will be easily achievable. He has also improved defensively, especially in one-on-one situations, and concerns over his physicality and aerial prowess have largely disappeared. Ait-Nouri will be City's first left-back specialist since Benjamin Mendy, who played his final game for the club almost four years ago. Oleksandr Zinchenko, Cancelo, Nathan Ake, Josko Gvardiol and, most recently, Nico O'Reilly have been among the players to fill the position, and while Ait-Nouri's arrival may go under the radar, in comparison to other signings City may make this summer do not be surprised if he proves to be a huge success.

The plan is to take part at the Club World Cup with City. I'm really excited about that. 'Doing that means I'll get to know my new team-mates sooner.' Man City signing immediately in disagreement with team-mate after £46m transfer
Tijjani Reijnders is set to join Manchester City this week in time for the Club World Cup, but the Dutchman disagrees with his new team-mates due to his views on the revamped tournament Incoming Manchester City signing Tijjani Reijnders has already entered into a disagreement with one of his new team-mates before his move has even completed. Reijnders is set to undergo his medical in the early part of this week. City have agreed a £46million fee with AC Milan for Reijnders to move to the Etihad Stadium. Should he pass his medical, Reijnders should become a City player in time to feature in the Club World Cup. The controversial tournament kicks off on Sunday when Al-Ahly face Inter Miami. City's campaign gets underway next Wednesday when they face Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia. They then take on UAE's Al-Ain in Atlanta on 23 June and Serie A giants Juventus in Orlando on 26 June in the group stages. They should make it through to the knockouts, with some tipping them to reach the final, which will take place on 13 July. Reijnders is eyeing the tournament as the perfect way to bed into his new club. The midfielder is currently on international duty with the Netherlands and admitted he is relishing the chance to make the move. He told Gazzetta dello Sport: "The medical tests? I couldn't wait any longer. The intention is to participate in the Club World Cup with City. I'm excited about it. "This way I can get to know my new teammates straight away. I'll return to Zeist on Sunday evening. Then I'll prepare for Tuesday's match against Malta." It's safe to say that not everyone is looking forward to the revamped tournament though. City have already played 57 games this season across the Premier League, Champions League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup. With as many as seven more games still to play, then less than a month between the final and the new season kicking off, Reijnders' soon-to-be team-mate Manuel Akanji has insisted that the Club World Cup is needed about as much as a hole in the head. "I have been a strong critic of this competition for some time now. We players would love to have some holidays, and some time for our bodies to rest. My City teammates are not exactly overjoyed about the tournament either," he said recently. "But it's now right in our faces, and there is nothing we can do about it. If we take part, then of course we want to win it. But if we reach the final, then the time period for us to recover ahead of the new season will become even shorter. "Set against the expectations we have, this hasn't been a good season. We finished third in the Premier League, three points behind Arsenal, and qualified for the Champions League. "But it is still our worst campaign for some time. However, Pep Guardiola still said he was proud of us for never giving up. The season could have finished far worse than it did."
