Shocking Truck Explosion in Suburban Neighborhood Damages 4 Homes and Injures the Driver: Watch
Ring camera footage captured a box truck exploding in Illinois on May 24 in what authorities have since ruled an accident The explosion in Addison was the result of a leaking propane tank in the back of the rental vehicle, per officials 'I thought, 'Wow, they're starting early with the fireworks, this year, but that one sure seems to have a little extra punch,' ' a neighbor recalled of the moment An exploding box truck in an Illinois neighborhood left multiple homes damaged and the vehicle's driver injured during Memorial Day weekend. On the morning of Saturday, May 24, the Addison Fire Protection District and Addison Police Department in Addison responded to the scene of an explosion at North Wood Dale Road, both agencies shared on Facebook. Upon arrival, crews discovered a "large debris field" ranging from Oak Street to Overkamp Avenue with "no indication of any fire" at that point. Ring camera footage shared by multiple outlets, including ABC affiliate WLS, shows the moment the large vehicle exploded while traveling through the residential area during the holiday weekend — as a massive "boom" noise could be heard, smoke appeared in the bed of the truck and debris flew through the air within seconds. Per an updated release from the APD, an investigation with the DuPage County Bomb Squad and ATF found that there was "no indication of anything suspicious," with the explosion being ruled an accident resulting from a propane tank leaking in the back of the truck. The explosion damaged "a few homes" in the area, as the vehicle's driver sustained minor injuries, per police. One home was evacuated due to "structural damage and potential for collapse," per the AFPD. CBS News Chicago reported that the explosion damaged four total homes, including one with a load-bearing wall that authorities say the truck pushed multiple feet inward. The vehicle was a Penske box truck, which the company told WLS had been rented out to a customer moving household items. Penske added that "explosive, flammable or otherwise hazardous materials should not be transported in a consumer rental moving truck" under its rental agreement. "Penske will cooperate fully with any further investigation by law enforcement," the company added. A spokesperson for Penske did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on Sunday, May 25. "I thought, 'Wow, they're starting early with the fireworks, this year, but that one sure seems to have a little extra punch'," neighbor Angelo Source told WLS of the startling moment. "We missed it," another neighbor, Rock Foreman, added. "Like, if we just lounged around a little bit longer, we would've been right here when it happened." Addison Fire Protection District Chief Brock Herion told the outlet that the vehicle's driver was transported to a local hospital after he was seen "walking next to the truck when the crews pulled up." He described the debris field as two-blocks long. Per CBS News Chicago, the district chief added that the homeowners whose home had been hit "described it as an earthquake and then a tree falling on their house." "Crews from Addison Public Works and DuPage County are cleaning up the area now, and the roadway should be opened within the next few hours," police shared in a statement following the explosion. "Thank you for your patience, and a big thank you to Addison PW and our partners at County." Read the original article on People

Woman speaks out after alleged homophobic attack at McDonald's in Illinois
A young woman was physically attacked and called "derogatory" names at a McDonald's in Illinois, with two males — including one juvenile — charged for the incident, according to the Carpentersville Police Department. The incident occurred on May 13, when police responded to a report of a fight at a McDonald's in Carpentersville, Illinois, which is about an hour outside of Chicago. Once on the scene, officials determined the incident "involved an aggravated battery against a female victim," police said in a press release shared over the weekend. Officials said the altercation began when two male suspects made "derogatory remarks about the victim's sexual orientation as they passed by her." This confrontation escalated into a physical fight, police said. The female victim, Kady Grass, sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where "she was treated and subsequently released," police said. MORE: Hate crimes, particularly against LGBTQ community, on the rise: FBI data Grass told Chicago ABC station WLS that the two males began stomping on her head, causing her to become unconscious. "It just blew my mind that this happened and it was all because I like girls instead of men," Grass, who suffered a broken nose after the attack, told WLS. Police said "multiple felony charges" were approved against the two males involved, including "the most serious" charge being aggravated battery causing bodily harm. MORE: Police seeking assailant who allegedly used anti-gay slur in NYC subway attack One of the suspects, a juvenile, turned himself in to police on May 16, and the other male, 19-year-old John Kammrad, was arrested on May 17, officials said. "This incident underscores the importance of addressing violence and discrimination within our community. The Carpentersville Police Department remains committed to ensuring public safety and promoting respect for all individuals," police said. Kammrad was charged with two counts of aggravated battery and mob action-use of force or violence disturbing the peace, according to court records. He was in custody at the Kane County Jail, but court records indicate that on Monday, the suspect was "released to other agency." MORE: 4 teens charged in suspected homophobic attack against women on London bus Grass told WLS the state's attorney's office informed her they are also considering charging Kammrad with a hate crime. Kammrad's status hearing is scheduled for May 22 and his plea setting is set for June 27, according to court records. Court records indicate that Kammrad has appointed an attorney, but the name of the public defender is not listed. College student killed in road rage leads to charges 4 years later, IL cops say
Just months away from graduating from Southern Illinois University, a 22-year-old man was fatally shot during a road rage incident in the Chicago suburbs, Illinois police say. Now, a 36-year-old man has been charged following the 2021 Thanksgiving break shooting of Daniel Lobo, the Gurnee Police Department announced May 12. 'This marks an important step in pursuing justice for Daniel and his family,' Gurnee Police Chief Brian Smith said in a statement. 'From the moment this tragedy occurred, our department has been committed to uncovering the truth and holding those responsible accountable.' Police said Lobo was a passenger in a vehicle that was involved in a road rage incident with another car. Lobo was shot in the back, according to police. Lobo, of Waukegan, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. 'Just because you got cut off. You know what I mean?' René Lobo, Daniel's father, told WLS at the time. 'That's not right. That person cannot be on the street anymore.' The Lake County Major Crime Task Force assisted officers in the investigation, leading to charges brought against Llovani Gomez. Gomez, who was already in custody for an unrelated case, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm, police said. Daniel Lobo was described in his obituary as an avid baseball player who had a love for music, with oldies and bachata being his favorites. 'He was a sweetheart, a dedicated and smart young man,' the obituary states. 'He spent most of his time studying, playing sports, visiting family and friends.' He was just six months away from graduating with his master's degree in biology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, per his obituary. Gurnee is about a 45-mile drive northwest from Chicago.
