One of South Africa's richest men, renowned businessman Johann Rupert and golfers Ernie Els and Retief Goosen are reportedly part of the high-level South African delegation led by President Cyril Ramaphosa, who are set to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington.
Ramaphosa will meet Trump in the Oval Office on Wednesday, as the Pretoria government seeks to reset the damaged relations with the US, a key trading partner and investor in South Africa.
According to media reports, Ramaphosa has included the golfers in his arsenal, seeking to appeal to Trump who loves the sport.
Speculation has been rife over the audience Ramaphosa will receive from Trump, following the dressing down given to visiting Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in February.
IOL has previously reported that since his inauguration, Trump has cut aid to South Africa, and has offered South African Afrikaner an opportunity to relocate to the US as refugees. So far, the first batch of 49 Afrikaners has arrived in the US.
US President Donald Trump has made good on his promise to cut funding to South Africa over the government's land expropriation policy and resettle white farmers, insisting that their land is being expropriated.

Meanwhile, the Economic Freedom Fighters has lambasted the inclusion of Rupert on the delegation.
"The Economic Freedom Fighters condemns in the strongest terms the inclusion of Stellenbosch billionaire Johann Rupert in a South African delegation that is set to meet with President of the United States of America Donald Trump to mend diplomatic, trade and economic relations between the two nations," said national spokesperson Sinawo Thambo.
"In what can only be described as capture and an exhibition of the undue influence of big business in an interaction between two nations premised on democracy and sovereignty, Trump and Ramaphosa have allowed their benefactors and funders to influence and control the relations between South Africa and the United States, undermining the people of both nations.
"Elon Musk and Johann Rupert are two sides of the same coin. Both are egoistical businessmen who parade their control over the presidents of these two nations and both hold a considerable stake in both of these economies. They are both racist to the core and are opposed to transformation and equity because it threatens their ill-gotten wealth and control over the political fortunes of the United States and South Africa," he said.

Proof of residence (a utility bill with your name on it qualifies). Confirmation of proof of income and/or financial dividends. Any information regarding your assets, including a valuation of property. Declaration of any private pension in your name (if applicable). As many as 200 000 clients have had to verify their details at a SASSA branch and had their grants withheld without review. Russia's latest drone strikes hit Kyiv, maternity ward in Odesa, Ukraine says
Russia launched another prolonged drone attack on Ukraine, killing one person and damaging swathes of Kyiv and striking a maternity ward in the southern port of Odesa, regional officials said early on Tuesday. The overnight strikes followed Russia's biggest drone assault on Ukraine on Monday, part of stepped-up operations Moscow said were retaliatory measures for Kyiv's recent brazen attacks in Russia. At least four people were hospitalised as a result of the hours-long attacks that hit seven of the city's 10 districts, city officials said. 'You can't break Ukrainians with terror,' Andriy Yermak, President Volodymyr Zelensky's chief of staff, said in a Telegram post after the attacks. Air raid alerts in Kyiv and most Ukrainian regions lasted five hours until about 5am, according to military data. 'A difficult night for all of us,' Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military district, said on Telegram. 'Throughout the night, the enemy relentlessly terrorised Kyiv with attack drones. They targeted civilian infrastructure and peaceful residents of the city.' The attack sparked fires in residential and non-residential neighbourhoods and open space areas, city officials said. Reuters' witnesses heard and saw countless loud explosions shaking the city and lighting the night sky. Photos and videos posted on Telegram channels showed heavy smoke rising in the darkness in different parts of Kyiv. The scale of the attack was not immediately known. Moscow has dramatically increased the pace of its attacks on Ukraine after Kyiv's strikes on strategic bombers at airbases inside Russia on June 1. Moscow also blamed Kyiv for bridge explosions on the same day that killed seven and injured scores. The attacks come despite pressure from US President Donald Trump on the two sides to move towards a resolution on the war. Moscow and Kyiv returned to negotiations for the first time in more than three years, but outside an agreement on the exchange of war prisoners, there has been no tangible progress. In addition to swarms of drones and missiles launched in recent days, Russia has also been advancing further on the ground along the frontline in eastern Ukraine, claiming on Tuesday to take more territory there. In the southern port of Odesa, a 'massive' overnight drone attack targeted an emergency medical building and a maternity ward and residential buildings, Oleh Kiper, governor of the broader Odesa region, said on Telegram. A 59-year-old man was killed in the attack on a residential area, and four people were injured, but patients and staff were safely evacuated from the maternity hospital, Kiper said. He posted photos of broken windows in what looked like a medical facility and of damage to the façade of several buildings. The two sides have denied targeting civilians in the war, but thousands of civilians have been killed in the conflict, most of them Ukrainian.

World Cup 2026 host cities say fans 'welcome' despite ongoing border control
USA - American World Cup host city officials assured Monday that overseas fans would be welcome at next year's tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico despite "uncertainty" amid ongoing concerns over visas, border controls and social unrest. In a briefing in New York that came just over a year from the opening game of the tournament on June 11, 2026, officials said President Donald Trump's administration remained "extremely supportive" of the World Cup. Since returning to power, Trump has started a global trade war, threatened to annex Canada and launched a border crackdown that has led to harsh treatment of foreign visitors attempting to enter the United States. Trump's immigration offensive has in turn led to civil unrest, with clashes in Los Angeles over the weekend triggered by large-scale raids last week. Eleven American cities will host the bulk of the games at next year's World Cup, which is being co-hosted by three nations for the first time and has been expanded to include 48 teams. Executives from the local organising committees for the 11 US World Cup venues gathered in New York on Monday to brief on logistical aspects of the tournament, including transportation, stadium access, fan zones as well as general access to the United States. "For each of our cities, we want to be prepared to make any person that is coming and makes the decision to come to the United States or come to this World Cup feel that they are welcome," said Meg Kane, head of the Philadelphia organising committee. - 'Extremely supportive' - Kane said while officials were planning "within uncertainty" due to matters taking place at national and international level, the Trump administration was firmly behind the tournament. "We do not play a role necessarily in what is happening in terms of the decisions that are made," Kane said. "What we can say is that the current administration - while there are certain situations that we are monitoring closely - has been extremely supportive of FIFA World Cup." Alex Lasry, the chief executive of the New York/New Jersey World Cup committee said officials were bracing for "millions" of fans inside and outside the stadiums irrespective of the political climate. "I think sports transcends geopolitics," Lasry told AFP. "I think we've seen that for Olympics. We've seen it for other World Cups, in Qatar or Russia. "People want to come to these mega sporting events, and they're going to travel to ensure that they're able to cheer on and see their team play. "Our job as a host committee is to make sure that we are putting on an event and making sure that our city and our region is ready to welcome everyone who's able to come to the World Cup," added Lasry, who was previously an assistant secretary for tourism in President Joe Biden's government. Los Angeles World Cup committee vice-president Jason Krutzsch said organisers were working to ensure fans "understand that they are welcome in Los Angeles and will have an amazing World Cup experience." "We're working closely with the administration," Krutzsch said adding that Trump's World Cup Task Force was established to "make sure that we can welcome fans from around the world and deliver an exceptional experience." As well as hosting games at the World Cup, Los Angeles will also stage the Super Bowl in 2027 before hosting the 2028 Olympics. "We really want to make sure that 2026 goes well," Krutzsch said. "We're really focused on delivering an exceptional experience in 2026 for the world.
