
Hato Hone St John Seeking $4.5m To Fund New Ambulance Stations
This June, Hato Hone St John is once again calling on the support of Kiwis to help raise $4.5million for the building and urgent repair of 13 ambulance stations around Aotearoa New Zealand.
Hato Hone St John Chief Executive Peter Bradley says this year's Annual Appeal is more than just raising money for bricks and mortar.
'This is about future-proofing our stations, the home base for our emergency crews, so that no matter what tomorrow brings, our teams will always be there for communities when they need us most,' Mr Bradley says.
'For our ambulance officers they are also a home away from home and a place to reset, recharge and connect with each other after attending a call out.'
Ambulance stations are also often a vital community hub for volunteers, including those delivering first aid training and running St John Youth programmes.
Money raised from this year's Light the Way Annual Appeal will go towards 10 new builds and three major repairs of Hato Hone St John Ambulance stations.
The locations are Kawakawa, Whangarei, Auckland Central (Pitt Street), Waihi, Cambridge, Morrinsville, Palmerston North, Rangiora, Nelson, Akaroa, Oamaru, Riversdale and Invercargill.
Frontline ambulance crews had an exceptionally busy year in 2024, responding to more than 450,000 incidents nationwide.
'Over the past decade demand for our services has increased nearly 90% percent,' Mr Bradley says.
'To keep up with this growing demand, our ambulance stations need to grow and adapt. Many require urgent repairs or complete rebuilds to meet modern safety standards and ensure we can continue to look after our ambulance officers and ready to respond."
Hato Hone St John provides emergency ambulance services to 97 percent of the country's geographical area.
Fundraising supports the costs of running the emergency ambulance service and helps towards infrastructure costs - like ambulance stations, essential buildings, repairs and maintenance.
Hato Hone St John staff and volunteers will be out on the street with collection buckets on 14 and 15 June, with schools and businesses supporting with local fundraising activities.

Other Annual Appeal facts:
The first Annual Appeal was held in Auckland in 1907, and it was named Ambulance Saturday.
In 1975 the first 24-hour live Telethon was televised on TV2 to raise money for St John Ambulance. The event raised just under $600,000 in 24 hours, which was a national fundraising record at the time.
In 2024 the Annual Appeal raised $3.9million towards building projects.
A special Giving Day is planned for later in June when donations given in a 24-hour period will be doubled.

Drive to keep hospital shuttle going

His donation-based minibus shuttle service runs five to six days a week, taking people to Dunedin Hospital for appointments. The service also did trips to Timaru and Christchurch when needed, Mr Goodin said. However, at one stage the shuttle service was in danger of folding. When he first started in June 2023, he was told by Hato Hone St John a service from the organisation was "about a year away". "That was when I said 'I'll put a shuttle on — we'll make it donation-based until they came on board'. "June last year, they didn't, and I had to make a decision: do I keep going? What do I do?" He said the decision to keep going was easy, but making the shuttle viable was the issue. "We couldn't not get people there. The bottom line is we've got to get people to their appointments because they were cancelling their appointments. "It looked like I was possibly going to have to close it down at one stage. It just reached a point where it just wasn't viable to keep going and the pockets weren't deep enough." Observatory Village began sponsoring first and then the Freemasons joined. Lodge Oamaru Kilwinning No 82 Right Worshipful Master Bruce Cawley said it was a very worthy cause to support. "We didn't think it was very fair [Mr Goodin] having to fork out all the time. So the lodge got fully involved in helping him to get the whole service running. "Between our lodge and our grand lodge we managed to pull enough money together to be able to keep him going. "Anything we can do to raise money to keep this shuttle running until such time as St John come on board, we will try and do," Mr Cawley said. The shuttle was all about taking care of Oamaruvians, he said. "It's a service that is required here because we have no bus service to Dunedin until late in the afternoon and that's far too late. "Oamaru's main population is elderly. They do need to get to hospital. A lot of people don't have their licence to be able to drive any more." Mr Goodin pays for all maintenance, insurance and running costs, while sponsorship pays for the drivers and fuel. "I'm extremely thankful for what the lodge and everyone has done," Mr Goodin said. "We've just got to keep going."

Fundraising to start as St John station consented

The Waitaki District Council has granted resource consent for the long-awaited project. The new Hato Hone St John station will be built on an area of land that will be subdivided off the northwest corner of 4 Weston Rd. The charitable organisation hopes that construction of the new station for Oamaru will start in the 2026 financial year. Otago Southland district operations manager David Milne said the new station would also have a public training facility. "The team is very excited about getting a new station as once it is complete, it will future-proof our operations. "Having a new station will have an incredibly positive impact on Hato Hone St John's people and services in Oamaru and will ensure the organisation can support the town and its surrounding rural district for years to come." "Once it is finished, the new station will also ensure our team can continue operating through any disruption or natural disaster. "We still need to fundraise for this project, though, so really do appreciate the continued support of the North Otago community," Mr Milne said. The Oamaru project will form part of St John's annual national fundraising campaign. Game shooting in ‘right direction'

She confirmed last week the ANZ Premiership, facing an uncertain future due to a new broadcast deal, would return next year with all six teams involved and was likely to be played during the same time frame as this season. The 2025 season has hit the ground running and Wyllie said broadcast ratings were up 40% and the community game was "thriving". "What we're seeing is Kiwis are loving it," Wyllie told the Otago Daily Times. "It's all pointing in the right direction for netball." The ANZ Premiership has been slashed from three rounds to two this season — which means teams get only 10 games before the playoffs — and there have been innovations including the two-point shot, timeouts and a coaches box. Wyllie said there had been some "heart-stopping moments" through the opening games, and while she conceded two rounds did not make a long season, she was pleased all teams hit the court strongly. Like many traditional netballers, Wyllie admitted she had reservations about introducing the two-point shot, but felt it had its place. "It's going down well. The players are enjoying it," she said. "Sometimes you could have been a minute to go, three goals down and thought the game was done — that is no longer the case. "I think those kind of things have been really interesting talking points and great to be able to see it come to life as we envisaged it when we were planning." The tactical nature of timeouts, and when coaches used their coaches box to deliver messages during the game, intrigued her the most. "What I've loved is the strategic nature of what I'm hearing from the coaches box, when they're using their timeouts and when they're talking with their players. "We've got three new coaches in the mix this year and it's brought a really different dynamic. "I'm really impressed with how they're all being quite strategic. "I think that for me as a netty is really exciting." Aside from their blip against the Central Pulse at the weekend, the Southern Steel have been tracking well this season. They recorded a massive win over the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic and were pipped by one point against the defending champions, the Northern Mystics. Even Wyllie thought the Steel had secured a win over the Mystics — "I was screaming at the TV that there was time" — but she was proud to see how they were bouncing back after a tough couple of years. "I think it's amazing resilience and to see a team that have had a tough few years, injury plagues, with a fresh new coach in there, they've been formidable." The ANZ Premiership reaches the halfway point this weekend. The Mainland Tactix hold top spot with three wins and one loss. The Pulse and the Mystics, who are awaiting results on Australian Diamond Donnell Wallam's wrist injury, round out the top three. The Steel sit fourth with one win and three losses, followed by the Magic — who picked up their first win on Monday — and the Northern Stars. In round five, the Steel are home to the Tactix, the Pulse meet the Mystics and in a repeat of this week's game, the Stars play the Magic.
