'I watched friend get eaten by a shark and most haunting moment was exactly like Jaws'

Daily Mirror3 days ago
A woman who survived a shark attack in Florida when she was just 21-years-old has opened up about the terrifying ordeal that invovled watching a predator eat her friend
A woman who desperately swam for over seven hours to survive a shark attack watched her friend get mauled by a beast in the water – and said one horrifying moment was just like the movie Jaws.

Tamara Ennis was a 21-year-old waitress when she endured one of the scariest scenarios imaginable near Ormond Beach, Florida, in August 1981. She was out sailing on a catamaran with three others when disaster struck. After sailing one mile from shore, dark clouds suddenly circled, and a storm battered their boat, before a pontoon filled with water.

The small catamaran, that only seated four people, flipped over and the four explorers, Daniel Perrin, who owned the boat, Randy Cohen, Christy Wapniarski and Tamara, scrambled to get up on a hull to stay out of the shark -infested water.

They had no food or water and spent six hours drifting further from the shore wearing just bathing suits.
After briefly hearing an engine nearby before it left, Tamara remembered: "The reality hit us, and we were just quiet. And Christy who was sitting in front of me, she was very quiet, and I could tell also that she was just making peace and I had a sense that she knew she was gonna die.'

After dawn, Tamara declared that she was going to start swimming before the sun went all the way up, which could make them lose direction.
At that moment, she thought she was going to die, but wanted to die trying, and Christy was the only one out of the four who was not a comfortable swimmer.
After giving her tips, the four then set out into the water, and Tamara will never forget what happened next.

She told YouTube channel A&E: 'I was up in front and it was only probably about an hour into the swim that I looked back and I heard, um, Christy screaming and yelling for Randy to come get her.'
Tamara initially thought her friend was drowning and she shouted at her to stay afloat, however, she then realised a shark was circling.
She continued: 'I realised I saw her thrashing about in the water. And then she went straight up just like in the movie, in the Jaws movie, when she went straight up and straight back into the water. And I knew she'd been hit by a shark.

'So I yelled to Randy that it was a shark and he thought she was drowning. So he was yelling back to her, and you know, calling her name, and she was just screaming 'come and get me now' and she went up again and down.
'And he was swimming while this happened and he didn't see that it was a shark. He just thought she was drowning. So the last time I saw her go up and down she just went face down into the water. I knew that, you know, I knew she was dead. She was completely pale, completely white, I knew she'd lost all her blood.'

Knowing there was nothing she could do to help, she carried on swimming, and she then felt something brush against her own leg.
She revealed: 'After seeing Christy get hit by the shark, I got bumped by something. And I looked down and it was a grey shark, bigger than I was, and I just had a split second vision of Christy and me saying, 'That's not how I wanna go. There is no way I can die like this.'
'I put myself in the frame of mind of a fish, or that I belonged to the ocean. It was the weirdest thing. Just in nanoseconds I was like, I belong here too so get out of my way too, so I just kept swimming backstroke.'

After five hours of swimming, Tamara lost sight of Randy and Daniel, and at one point had to swim against the current after spotting sharks in the distance.
She also suffered hallucinations and said her life flashed before her during the swim that left her severely exhausted and sunburnt.

Finally, after seven hours, Tamara made it back near land, and a lifeguard recused her.
She recalled: 'I just told him instinctively – 'I've just swam about nine miles, there's a boat out there, one person's dead. And there are a couple of guys and I don't know if they are dead or alive.''
Randy and Daniel both made it out alive and Tamara saw the former in hospital where he stayed for two weeks with hypothermia.

As for Daniel, she never saw him again, and has no idea what happened to him.
Tamara meanwhile started working on boats in the Bahamas to help her trauma and she concluded: 'I still to this day won't go in dark water but surviving that also gives you a whole new outlook on life.
'Dying wasn't an option for me during that time so I just had to keep good thoughts and say, 'Ok, I've made it another minute, I made it another five minutes, I made it another hour.' And just keep going and thinking about, you know, your family, or your future, and not giving in to the negative thoughts is how I survived.'
The body of Christy, who was just 19-years-old and was from Chicago, was never found.

'I live in a £3m party pad on an island you can only reach by boat or helicopter'

Eight years ago tech entrepreneur Mike Conner bought a dilapidated fort on a remote Welsh island and began an epic restoration project to turn it into a unique home that's now for up for sale. If the idea of complete solitude, away from the hustle and bustle, with only the sound of crashing waves, chirping birds and stunning sea views as your backdrop sounds like heaven, then private island life is for you. Oh, and you'll need a cool £3million to secure it. ‌ Thorne Island, accessible only by boat from the Pembrokeshire mainland or via helicopter, thanks to a handy helipad, is one of Wales ' most extraordinary locations. It's now on the market for offers over £3m. ‌ The island is dominated by an impressive fort, which one man has spent years and over £2m of his own money restoring. This historic Grade II defensive building has been transformed into a home and potential business venture. With no neighbours in sight, it could also be the ultimate party pad. ‌ Thorne Island fort was initially constructed during the 1850s, forming part of a dozen fortifications erected around Pembroke Dock's entrance as "Palmerston's Haven defences" to ward off potential Napoleonic attacks. However, in 2017 the historic Welsh structure was stumbled upon by a restoration enthusiast who had a grand vision for the island. Businessman Mike Conner, now 52, took the leap to resurrect the island and fort after spotting it in a YouTube clip. Despite the challenges, he remained undeterred in his mission to save the fort from ruin and transform it into one of Wales' most remarkable homes, employing a team of local tradespeople, boat companies and specialist craftspeople over many years. Eight years on from purchasing it, the fort has become a unique dwelling and arguably one of the most intricate and ambitious renovation projects undertaken in Wales, if not the UK. ‌ Among the hurdles was the significant problem of how to deliver supplies and equipment for the works. But Mr Conner had a solution. Over just two days, 350 helicopter trips were made, airlifting everything onto the island. Inside the fort, there are bright and spacious rooms, wood-burning stoves, mezzanine bedrooms with spiral staircases, and luxurious new bathroom facilities - a modern and comfortable space that feels worlds away from how it looked when the project commenced. ‌ ‌ The impressive 8,000 square feet of living space includes a bespoke rooftop bar offering incredible views overlooking St Ann's Head, and an internal courtyard that's perfect for hosting unforgettable parties. ‌ Guests can arrive in true James Bond or Agatha Christie style, flying in via helicopter or arriving by boat, and then party into the night without worrying about disturbing neighbours or dealing with uninvited guests. There's ample room for overnight guests too, as the fort currently has five bedrooms. However, bedroom two, formerly the soldiers' barracks, is a long and spacious room that can accommodate many people. ‌ The property also features a large kitchen diner and family area, a spacious lounge and dining room, and numerous shower rooms and cloakrooms. There are plenty of storage rooms, a mezzanine level, a workshop, and a boiler room as well. ‌ The fort is listed, so no walls can be removed, but there are numerous rooms and spaces that can be tailored to suit the new owner's desires - fewer bedrooms and more reception space, or perhaps a massive gym once the equipment has been brought in, a huge banqueting hall - the possibilities are endless. Mike adds that there's another unique aspect to living at Thorne Island, besides its history, structure and location - it offers absolute silence from man-made noise and disruption, surrounded by breath-taking 360-degree views and plenty of opportunities for exploration on land and sea. ‌ Following the years of graft and the many obstacles that Mike faced - challenges unique to this extraordinary renovation - a fresh owner can now relish the island without enduring the strain of such an epic undertaking; though routine maintenance checks against the elements will be essential to preserve his remarkable efforts. Spanning from 2017 to 2025, Mike has accomplished something genuinely extraordinary, though he occasionally overlooks this feat, reflecting: "The trouble is, with something this big, you never really stand back and see what you've achieved, so it's nice to see how far we've come when I watch the original YouTube video back." The estate agent marketing the island and fortress explains that the £3m property boasts a commanding position at the gateway to one of Britain's most expansive natural harbours, presenting itself as a striking and genuinely one-of-a-kind residence. The island holds registration as a Hotel and Premises (VOA Business Rates), meaning the estate agent highlights the property's versatility for everything from private living to commercial enterprises. Available for offers exceeding £3m, those interested in Thorne Island can contact Strutt and Parker on 07826 672139.

In fact, of the 561 designated bathing waters across England and Wales, there are just 93 that are considered the safest to swim in. Swimming in polluted water or water of poor classification can leave people ill due to the likelihood of harmful bacteria, viruses, or pathogens like E. coli being present. The most common illness associated with bathing in dirty water is gastroenteritis, which causes diarrhoea and vomiting. In most cases these symptoms are mild and resolve on their own - but some cases can be severe, and even require hospitalisation. The list of 93 bathing spots is based on water company assessments, which reveal which coastal waters are not impacted by sewage pollution. One of the most popular beaches on the list is Broadsands Beach in South Devon. Another stunning Devon beach, Ladram Bay, has been included in the list too. Low Newton in Northumberland, Whitesands Bay, and Poole Harbour Lake also make the cut. Alum Chine Beach in Bournemouth, meanwhile - the coastal spot that has just been named as one of the World's Best Beaches - has a water cleanliness classification of "excellent". Of the 93 bathing waters, 15 are in Devon, 28 are in Cornwall, 21 are in Wales and 12 are in Dorset - with others scattered around England. Inland bathing waters have been removed from the data as these are often affected by sewage, whether that be due to overflow or agricultural and sludge runoff from fields. The 89 bathing waters in Scotland haven't been included here as Scottish Water doesn't provide data or have processes in place to indicate the impact of sewage on these bathing waters. You can see the full list of beaches along with the water company and water classification in our interactive map below. 5 Whitesands Bay in Pembrokeshire has a water classification of 'excellent' Credit: Getty The classification of bathing water is sorted into four categories - excellent, good, sufficient, and poor. Those rated as excellent or good generally have the best water quality for swimming. On the list of 93, only two have the sufficient water classification - Goring Beach and Llandudno North Shore. You can still swim in sufficient classified water, as it indicates it meets the minimum standard for bathing, but there may be some risk of illness from bacteria. To see more about the water classification and for more information on bathing waters across the country, Surfers Against Sewage has created the Safer Seas and Rivers Service app. The app has its own map showing live sewage discharges across the UK while monitoring over 17,000 overflows. We'd recommend checking it before visiting a beach in the UK - especially after heavy rainfall.
