NEW YORK (AP) — Seattle switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje was among nine first-round picks from last year's amateur draft selected Monday for the All-Star Futures Game at Atlanta's Truist Park on July 12.
A 22-year-old from the Netherlands selected with the 15th overall pick, Cijntje is 4-4 with 4.88 ERA in 12 starts and three relief appearances for High-A Everett in his first professional season, striking out 58 and walking 31 in 51 2/3 innings.
He has held 180 batters to a .165 average (26 for 158) with seven home runs pitching right-handed and 42 batters to a .360 average (9 for 25) with two home runs pitching left-handed.
Among other first-round picks from last year are Colorado first baseman/outfielder Charlie Condon (third), St. Louis shortstop JJ Wetherholt (seventh), Pittsburgh shortstop Konnor Griffin (ninth), Chicago White Sox outfielder Braden Montgomery (12th), New York Mets outfielder Carson Benge (19th), Toronto right-hander Trey Yesavage (20th), Minnesota shortstop Kaelen Culpepper (21st) and Arizona outfielder Slade Caldwell (29th).
There are 17 former first-round picks overall.
Philadelphia ruled out one of them, pitching prospect Andrew Painter, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery. The Phillies had been hopeful he could make his major league debut after the All-Star break if all went well with his progress.
'We will keep him on our plan,' manager Rob Thomson said Monday. 'There's nothing that says he's coming up here at all. He's got to be healthy. He's got to be pitching well. We've said that all along.'
San Diego 18-year-old shortstop Leo De Vries is among 13 international prospects selected for the All-Star Futures Game, including five from the Dominican Republic, three from Venezuela, two from Canada and one each from the Bahamas, Cuba and Panama.
Detroit outfielder Max Clark was picked for the second straight year after going 1 for 4 at Texas last July.
Washington right-hander Marquis Grissom Jr. is on the NL team. His father, Marquis Grissom, is the AL manager, while the NL is managed by Braves Hall of Famer Chipper Jones.
Among 1,170 players who have appeared in Futures Games, 86.5% have played in at least one big league game and 250 total players (21.4%) have been selected for a major league All-Star Game.

Troubling Malik Beasley debt details emerge with NBA star embroiled in gambling probe

Malik Beasley seems to be in some deep water. Amid a federal investigation into gambling allegations made earlier this week, it has now been revealed that the NBA free agent with nearly $60 million in contract earnings across his nine-year career is facing financial woes that include multiple debts and lawsuits against him. It was reported Tuesday that Beasley is being sued by his former marketing agency for failing to repay in full a $650,000 advance. Then, The Detroit News reported Tuesday evening the sharpshooter has incurred debts to a celebrity barber, a dentist, a landlord and a lender — all in addition to the New York-based marketing firm. Advertisement 4 Malik Beasley has had a troubled financial history in recent years. AP 'I have been with Malik for a long time, I have seen a lot of people around him come and go, but I have stayed away from any of his financial management or mismanagement or decisions he would make with money,' Steve Haney, Beasley's criminal defense lawyer, told The Detroit News. Haney, who said he doesn't 'get involved' in Beasley's finances, added: 'You hope to get them around the best business people and planners and management people. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.' Advertisement 4 Malik Beasley fumbled a pass with a chance to make a game-tying three against the Knicks in the playoffs. Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images The Detroit News reported that Beasley even pledged his current and future NBA contracts to a lending company, South River Capital LLC, which won a nearly $5.8 million judgment against Beasley — a copy of the judgment was filed in 2022 when Beasley was with the Timberwolves. Beasley's reasoning for borrowing money is unclear, though court records show that he paid back $1.3 million in early 2023. 'It is very common for professional athletes to go to third-party lenders and get advances on contracts. It's a part of the business of professional sports,' Haney said. 'Many of these lenders are predatory and charge extremely high interest rates and outrageous fees that border on usury.' Advertisement 4 Malik Beasley had a career year in Detroit and was primed for a contract extension. AP Beasley's other financial issues include being sued twice for failing to pay more than a combined $20,000 in rent at The Stott building in Detroit. In January, a celebrity barber serving many NBA players won a $26,827 judgment against Beasley. Elsewhere in January, a Minnesota dentist won a $34,390 default judgment against Beasley, and the dentist, Hassan Alshehabi of Delicate Smiles, started garnishing Beasley's paychecks from the Pistons the following month. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post The 28-year-old made 319 3-pointers for the Pistons this past season, just one behind Anthony Edwards' league-leading 320. While the gambling investigation is fresh and ongoing, the evidence of Beasley's financial issues is growing.

Nikolaj Ehlers remains unsigned going into Day 2 of NHL free agency

Associated Press Nikolaj Ehlers could choose his destination as soon as Wednesday after letting the start of NHL free agency pass without signing a contract. Ehlers became one of the rare top players available not to sign on the first day of free agency, opting instead to sit back and consider his options. Carolina, Tampa Bay and Washington were considered among the teams interested in pursuing the 29-year-old from Denmark who played his first nine seasons with Winnipeg. 'We've had talks with his agent," Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky said. 'He's taking his time to field offers. He's obviously a very popular person right now, and we're waiting to see where that goes.' Ehlers and his camp watched Tuesday as fellow winger Brock Boeser re-signed in Vancouver for just over $50 million and older forward Mikael Granlund got $7 million annually from Anaheim. With the salary cap increasing a record amount to $95.5 million and a lack of high-end talent available, Ehlers could sign the most lucrative contract among players changing teams this summer. Ehlers going unsigned is almost certainly holding things up for players like Anthony Beauvillier and Jeff Skinner, who could be part of a Plan B or C for those who don't land their first choice. Andrew Mangiapane signed with back-to-back defending Western Conference champion Edmonton on a two-year deal worth $7.2 million late Tuesday night. Defensemen Dmitry Orlov, Brent Burns and Matt Grzelcyk, forwards Jack Roslovic and Mason Appleton and goaltenders Ilya Samsonov and Alexandar Georgiev are also still available. 'Day 1 is always a little bit hectic and crazy,' said San Jose GM Mike Grier, who made multiple moves but still needs to spend more to get to the salary floor. 'We'll kind of see how things shake out. After (Tuesday night), things will settle down and teams will kind of regroup and see what's out there and the free agents will do the same.' ___ AP Sports Writer Aaron Beard in Raleigh, North Carolina, contributed to this report. ___ AP NHL: recommended
