Forget Manali: Try Shoja for silence, pines, and zero plans
Where exactly is Shoja?
Nestled at around 8,000 ft above sea level in the Seraj Valley, Shoja (also spelled Sojha) sits quietly between Banjar and Jalori Pass, and is roughly 5 hours from Manali, yet galaxies away in vibe. It's the kind of place where your phone network dies, and your stress goes with it.
What's here?
No neon-lit markets. No rooftop DJs. No waiting in line for Maggi with 40 other tourists in snow boots. Shoja is gloriously uneventful. Which means your itinerary looks like this:
Wake up to clouds curling around deodars.
Drink chai on a wooden veranda that creaks just right.
Walk until your legs or the fog say stop.
Repeat.
If peace had a postal address, it'd be this.

Shoja's towering pine and deodar forests aren't just scenery, they're characters in your no-plot-just-vibes vacation. Walk into the woods, and you'll hear them whisper (or maybe that's just the wind). Either way, it's hypnotic. The Jalori Pass, just 5 km away, offers treks to Serolsar Lake, a glassy pool surrounded by myths and more trees than people.

No plans? No problem.
Don't come to Shoja with a checklist. This is not the place for aggressive sightseeing or back-to-back selfies. Come here to un-hurry. Stroll to the village temple. Try local Himachali dishes like siddu and madra at a homestay. Watch the sun set behind a ridge that doesn't have a name—and doesn't need one.
Yes, it is quiet, in an unfiltered way. Expect misty roads, mossy roofs, and the kind of dramatic skies that don't need editing. One click and if you show it to your friends, they will ask you 'Wait… where
is
this place?'
Getting there
Shoja is best accessed via road.
The nearest big town is Aut, which you can reach from Delhi via Mandi. From Aut, hire a cab or take a local bus through winding roads that progressively shake off civilization. The last hour is all pines, bends, and heart-fluttering views.

So, why Shoja?
Because sometimes, the best plan is no plan. Because the pines don't care about itineraries. Because the silence here is not awkward, it's healing. And because you deserve a break from Manali's overexposed postcard and discover a story that's still being written in birdsong and breeze.
Shoja isn't just a place. It's an exhale. And trust us—you need one.

Infra a pain point at Tiruvallur station
Chennai: From the long-delayed foot overbridge (FOB) project to closed ticket counters, and lack of basic amenities, Tiruvallur railway station continues to pose multiple challenges to its one lakh passengers every day. A major concern is the foot overbridge work being carried out under Amrit Bharat Scheme. "Work started in August 2023, and platforms were dug up. It's supposed to connect all six platforms, but it's still pending. Commuters are left to struggle. Construction materials are placed on the platform, and it is hard for people to walk," said K Baskar, of the Tiruvallur railway passengers welfare association. Beyond the FOB, the station suffers from poor infrastructure and a lack of amenities. Despite witnessing more than 180 train halts per day across six platforms, shelters are inadequate. "If it rains, passengers are exposed. There's no protection," Baskar added. Another long-standing issue is the access road from the Manavalanagar side, used by nearly 50% of the station's commuters. Even during light rain, water stagnation makes this route impassable. "Manavalanagar is a densely populated residential area and a key traffic junction where two state highways meet. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Yet, the second entrance to the station remains unserved," Baskar said. "There is no functioning counter during peak hours. Commuters are left without options," he added. While escalators have been installed for island platforms 2 and 3, the sanctioned lift is yet to be set up. "Even CCTV installation at the station is incomplete. Trains halt here for a long time — it's a major suburban hub. But the facilities don't reflect that," said T Sadagopan, a resident of Pattabiram. A Southern Railway official said that projects are progressing in phases under the Amrit Bharat Scheme. "Stations like Mambalam, Chennai Beach, and Park are set to be reopened this Sept. Work at Tiruvallur and other stations may take longer," the official added.

Silchar MP raises demand for direct flight to Delhi in Parliament
Silchar: Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya made a strong pitch in the Lok Sabha for the introduction of a direct flight between Silchar and New Delhi, reviving a long-pending demand from the Barak Valley region. Participating in a debate in the Lower House on Wednesday, the BJP MP underscored the urgency of enhancing air connectivity between the remote northeastern city and the national capital, calling it a "necessity rooted in both practicality and regional equity." Currently, air passengers from Silchar are forced to travel to Delhi via either Kolkata or Guwahati, resulting in travel times that often exceed five hours. Suklabaidya termed the lack of direct connectivity as not only an inconvenience but also a financial and emotional burden for frequent travellers, including students, patients, officials, entrepreneurs and tourists. "Silchar is not just a city in Assam — it's a strategic gateway to neighbouring states like Mizoram, Tripura, and parts of Meghalaya," the MP said. "In the absence of direct flights, the region suffers a connectivity deficit that affects mobility, economic development, and access to healthcare," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Foods and Natural Strategies That May Support Lower Back Wellness Learn More Undo Suklabaidya urged the civil aviation ministry to take immediate steps under the Centre's UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme to facilitate a direct flight between Silchar and Delhi. "This is not merely about convenience. It is about fairness, accessibility, and integrating the Barak Valley more meaningfully with the rest of the country," he said. He added that such a move would also support the govt's broader goal of strengthening infrastructure and reducing regional imbalances in the northeast.

British Indian hotelier Surinder Arora in race to expand Heathrow Airport
One of Britain's leading Indian-origin hoteliers, Surinder Arora , on Thursday revealed plans to join the race to expand Heathrow Airport with a cost-efficient solution that offers a fully operational third runway by 2035. The Arora Group , behind some of the UK's prominent hotels and luxury resorts, said its "Heathrow West" proposal to the UK government has been developed alongside American civil engineers Bechtel, who have a track record of delivering airport projects globally. Story to Hear Undo "After a decade working with our world leading design and delivery team, I am very proud that the Arora Group can finally unveil to the UK government our Heathrow West proposal , which directly meets and supports the United Kingdom's primary objective of unlocking economic growth at the UK's only hub airport, with a strong commitment of doing so on-budget and on-time," said Arora. "We are delighted that the government has taken a common-sense approach to invite proposals from all interested parties for the very first time rather than granting exclusivity to the current airport operator, no matter its track record. I want the UK to succeed... Our project will generate employment and skills training opportunities across every region of the UK." Live Events The billionaire tycoon claimed that his plans incorporate simpler and less disruptive construction, enabling earlier delivery of new terminal capacity and avoiding the major disruption of building over the M25 highway. "Heathrow West will have a board that comprises members with proven track records in governance, finance, construction, aviation and sustainability. Furthermore, Heathrow West will be committed to working with airlines to adapt its design to ensure it provides value for money and operational resilience while promoting technological innovation," said Carlton Brown, CEO of Heathrow West. "Ultimately, I want to see Heathrow help Britain become the best-connected nation in the world and facilitate the trade and inward investment our UK economy needs in order to compete with the rest of the world. There is no reason as to why the UK's only hub cannot outcompete not just its European rivals, but also Dubai, Singapore and others." The company said building a shorter 2,800-metre third runway, instead of the full-length 3,500-metre runway planned by the airport, would result in "reduced risk" and avoid "spiralling cost". With a shorter runway, efficient construction programme, fewer dependencies and a clear path to site mobilisation, the evidence provided in the submission strongly suggests that this scheme, and the new runway in particular, can be delivered in the target timeframe of 10 years while offering a more acceptable and cost-effective solution, the property and retail group said. The plan by the British Indian hotel magnate includes building a new terminal, which would open in two phases in 2036 and 2040. Locally to Heathrow in west London, the Arora Group properties include the Hilton Garden Inn London, Holiday Inn Express Heathrow T4 and Sofitel London Heathrow T5. Its portfolio also includes the Fairmont Windsor Park, InterContinental London - The O2, and Luton Hoo Hotel, Golf & Spa - which served as host during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to the UK last week. UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is set to review the Airports National Policy Statement, which provides the basis for decision-making on the Heathrow expansion, the government's agenda to meet the ever-increasing air traffic demands at Britain's largest international airport.
