Viral Video: Chilling footage shows 'execution' of medical staff at Syria hospital

Mint6 hours ago
A purported video clip shows, what appears to be, a few men in military garb killing a medical worker at a hospital in the city of Sweida in southern Syria.
Mint could not verify the authenticity of the clip.
The video was published by activist media collective Suwayda 24. The groups said the gunmen were from the Syrian military and security forces, news agency Associated Press reported.
The incident was caught on security cameras installed at the hospital.
The clip dated July 16 showed a group of armed men forcing staff in a Syrian hospital to kneel, and then they 'executed' one of them who resisted.
In the video, which was widely shared on social media, a large group of people in scrubs could be seen kneeling on the floor in front of a group of armed men.
A few moments later, the armed men grab a man and hit him on the head as if they are going to apprehend him.
The man tries to resist by wrestling with one of the gunmen, before he is shot once with an assault rifle and then a second time by another person with a pistol.
In the video, a man in a dark jumpsuit with 'Internal Security Forces' written appears to be guiding the men in camouflage into the hospital.
Another security camera shows a tank stationed outside the facility, news agency Associated Press reported.
A Syrian government official was quoted by Associated Press as saying that they could not immediately identify the attackers in the video, and are investigating the incident to try to figure out if they are government-affiliated personnel or gunmen from tribal groups.
In a statement posted by state-run news agency SANA, Syria's Interior Ministry said Deputy Minister of Interior for Security Affairs Maj. Gen. Abdul Qader Al-Tahhan was assigned to oversee the investigation "to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and arrested as quickly as possible.'
'We condemn and denounce this act in the strongest terms, and we affirm that the perpetrators will be held accountable and brought to justice to receive their just punishment, regardless of their affiliations," the statement read.
The government had last month set up a committee tasked with investigating attacks on civilians during the sectarian violence in the country's south, which is supposed to issue a report within three months.
The video was shot amid the intense clashes between militias of the Druze minority community and armed tribal groups and government forces.
The incident at the Sweida National Hospital exacerbates tensions between the Druze minority community and the Syrian government, after clashes in July between Druze and armed Bedouin groups targeted sectarian attacks against them.
The violence has worsened ties between them and Syria's Islamist-led interim government under President Ahmad al-Sharaa, who hopes to assert full government control and disarm Druze factions.
Though the fighting has largely calmed down, government forces have surrounded the southern city and the Druze have said that little aid is going into the battered city, calling it a siege.

Uddhav proposes ‘Bhrashtachar Pe Charcha' as he trains his guns on MVA ministers, attacks Fadnavis for protecting them

Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) Monday launched a sharp attack on the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti government in Maharashtra, staging a protest at Mumbai's Shivaji Park against what it called the 'brazen protection' of tainted ministers. It also launched a statewide protest at all the district collector's offices, marked by sloganeering and pointed references to specific leaders of the ruling alliance. Party workers called out various names, including ministers Manikrao Kokate, who was accused of playing rummy during the Assembly session; Bharat Gogawale, who was alleged to have engaged in black magic; and Sanjay Shirsat, who faced accusations of possessing a bag of cash in a hotel room. Shiv Sena (UBT) announced that the agitation will continue across districts until the 'corruption Cabinet' is dismantled. Addressing the gathering at Shivaji Park after the demonstration, Thackeray instructed his party cadre to take the fight beyond rallies and into everyday conversations. Drawing a parallel with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 2014 campaign, he said, 'Modi had 'Chai Pe Charcha'.' 'Now, wherever you go — at tea stalls, in salons — start 'Bhrashtachar Pe Charcha'. Avoid only the shady bars, like Savali, owned by Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam. This protest should be continued till the corrupt ministers are removed,' he said. Thackeray also launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, saying that he feels pity for him since he cannot muster the courage to take action against 'corrupt' ministers. 'He has a brute majority, and his bosses sit in Delhi, yet he cannot muster the courage to sack the corrupt ministers. Even if we assume that he has not indulged in corruption himself, why is he covering up for others? We know that the BJP has no candidate who can be its national party president, but don't you also have anyone to replace these tainted ministers?' he questioned. Accusing the BJP of being the 'Bhrashtachari Janata Party', Thackeray mocked Fadnavis, saying 'He is not a chief minister, but a 'thief minister'. The Congress has given him a good name.' He challenged Fadnavis to 'throw off the pressure from Delhi' or risk being 'swept away' by public anger. 'In China, if someone says something against the government, they disappear. Here, too, similar things have happened; the Vice President was removed and he is now missing — show us where he is,' Thackeray said, referring to Jagdeep Dhankhar, who suddenly resigned as Vice President last month. Thackeray inquired about Dhankhar's disappearance and urged the BJP to disclose his whereabouts. He accused the Mahayuti alliance of pushing Maharashtra to 'the front row of corruption' while relegating it 'to the back row in development'. 'They have time to run dance bars and carry cash bags, but not to address farmers' problems,' he said.

US Congressman calls for return of American aid worker's body killed in Syria

U.S. Congressman Abraham Hamadeh made a brief visit to Syria where he discussed with the country's interim president the return of the body of an American aid worker who was taken hostage and later confirmed dead in the war-torn country, his office said Monday. Kayla Mueller, 26, was captured in northern Syria in August 2013 and her family and U.S. officials confirmed her death more than a year later. Hamadeh, an Arizona Republican, has vowed to return Mueller's body(ABC News) Hamadeh's visit to Syria comes as a search has been underway in remote parts of the country for the remains of people who were killed by the Islamic State group that once controlled large parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat six years ago. Kayla Mueller, 26, was captured in northern Syria in August 2013 and her family and U.S. officials confirmed her death more than a year later. Hamadeh, an Arizona Republican, has vowed to return Mueller's body — which has not yet been found — to her family. Hamadeh's office said he was in Syria for six hours to meet President Ahmad al-Sharaa to discuss the return of Mueller's body to her family in Arizona. The statement added that Hamadeh also discussed the need to establish a secure humanitarian corridor for the safe delivery of medical and humanitarian aid to the southern province of Sweida that recently witnessed deadly clashes between pro-government fighters and gunmen from the country's Druze minority. A Syrian government official did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Hamadeh's statement. Dozens of foreigners, including aid workers and journalists, were killed by IS militants who declared a so-called caliphate in 2014. The militant group lost most of its territory in Iraq in late 2017 and was declared defeated in 2019 when it lost the last sliver of land it controlled in east Syria. Since then, dozens of gravesites and mass graves have been discovered in northern Syria containing remains and bodies of people IS had abducted over the years. American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, as well as humanitarian workers Mueller and Peter Kassig are among those killed by IS. None of the remains is believed to have been found. Mueller, from Prescott, Arizona, was taken hostage with her boyfriend, Omar Alkhani, after leaving a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Aleppo, Syria, where he had been hired to fix the internet service for the hospital. Mueller had begged him to let her tag along because she wanted to do relief work in the war-ravaged country. Alkhani was released after two months, having been beaten. In 2015, the Pentagon said Mueller died at the hands of IS and not in a Jordanian airstrike targeting the militant group as the extremists claimed earlier.
