BBC Bargain Hunt returns to Powys with four Newtown shows

One of daytime TV's most popular programmes could be returning to Newtown after filming in the town for the first time.
Four episodes of the iconic Bargain Hunt show were filmed in front of a packed Tower Auctions in Pool Road on Saturday (May 17).
The episodes, which will be shown from around three months' time, were presented by David Harper alongside antique experts Thomas Forrester and Kate Bliss.
Eight blue and red teams battled it out at auction to try and win the ultimate prize - a golden gavel - which is awarded for making a profit on all three items.
TV crews returned to mid Wales last week after filming the teams at the antiques fair at the Royal Welsh Showground in Llanelwedd, near Builth Wells earlier this month.
Kate Bliss, who's an antiques expert based in Herefordshire, told the County Times that the showground fair is one of her favourites, which Thomas Forrester added "I love Builth Wells".
Both Kate and Thomas are the longest serving experts on the show after making their television debut when the programme first aired 25 years ago.
Thomas, who grew up on a beef farm and wanted to go into auctioneering after visiting cattle auctions with his dad, praised mid Wales' "beautiful countryside" and "fantastic" summery weather.
"I'm very much looking forward to this auction and the room is full which is quite unusual," he said.
"We'd like to thank Tower Auctions; they've been lovely and an absolute delight. They've pushed the boat out for us.'
Tower Auctions was founded 10 years ago by Cushy Numbers' John Gilligan and Ben Lloyd, who was the auctioneer on the day of filming.
'It's great for Newtown and our little auction house,' John said. 'It's been in the pipeline for a long time.
'They loved us, and they'll be using us again. It's fantastic for us and our area.'
One of the many locals inside the bidding room was Val Forsythe who's an avid Bargain Hunt fan.
"We often pop in here [Tower Auctions] so we've come to offer our support,' she said. "I hope it does well and it's good for Newtown."
A filming crew was spotted around Newtown last week including at the Textile Museum where presenter David Harper learnt more about the town's heritage and the Pryce Jones collection.
A spokesperson for Newtown Textile Museum said: 'What a great day we had filming in the museum with the BBC Bargain Hunt team!
'A thoroughly professional group of people who made the day so enjoyable.'

Bargain Hunt Mark Stacey's major bowel cancer surgery and life off the screen

The antiques specialist had a bowel cancer tumour surgically removed. Bargain Hunt favourite Mark Stacey is a familiar face for antiques fans. As well as his long-standing slot on the BBC show, he has also regularly shared his expertise on Flog It!, Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, and Antiques Road Trip over the years. But much of his life off the screen remains unknown. ‌ Mark became fascinated with antiques as a child, when he began collecting stamps and coins. This passion evolved over time, and he began to collect small silver items and artworks, which paved the way for his career in antiques trading. ‌ The 60-year-old joined the Bargain Hunt team back in 2002 after responding to an ad in the Antiques Trade Gazette. His screen test was a triumph, securing his long-time spot on the programme. ‌ But it hasn't all been smooth sailing, as the star underwent major surgery in 2023, seeing an influx of fan support. Following the surgery to remove a bowel cancer tumour, he received an outpouring of support from fans when he shared a post-hospital photo, reported Liverpool Echo. ‌ In the post online, he said: "Thanks to Lincoln Country Hospital, had a bowel cancer tumour removed to robotics on Thursday, this pic on Friday morning." He added: "Our NHS is amazing, we must protect it." ‌ Reflecting on his career, the star said: "I don't think I could do anything other than what I do know. If I had to have a change of career, I am sure it would be something creative." He also noted the evolution of the antiques trade, offering an insight for those considering a career in the industry. He said: "The antiques trade is changing fast for anyone wanting to get into it. ‌ "It offers great fun, excitement and very little money, as a dealer that is, but you get to meet a wonderful array of eccentric people who have passion and many stories, some may even be true, but first and foremost you must research and handle lots of things and be prepared to make a loss - this is how you learn." In other Bargain Hunt news, a guest on the show was recently left in bits after finding out that the item they brought had sold for over '100 times its value.' Bargain Hunt star Irita Marriott was hosting her Discovery+ series, The Derbyshire Auction House, when she discovered a heartfelt story with guest Helen and her son Ben. ‌ While scouring their home for hidden gems, Helen presented a set of family snaps which contained original signed shots from acclaimed photographers that dated back to 1975. They included works from Graham Smith and Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen, whose pieces are now displayed in the Tate Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum. In a heartbreaking twist, it was unveiled that the photos were being auctioned to help fund the care of Helen's husband, Alan. Alan was suffering from dementia at the time and required full time care. However, he sadly passed away before the episode aired with the money being used towards his funeral. Pum Diwrnod o Ryddid to be performed in Llanidloes

One of Wales' most popular musicals will be performed in an epic one-off open air theatrical event in the heart of Llanidloes. Pum Diwrnod o Ryddid is a Welsh language musical set against the backdrop of the Llanidloes Chartist uprising of 1839 which will be performed on Sunday, September 14. Performed by a 100-strong Cwmni Theatr Maldwyn cast of people from all parts of Mid Wales, the "West End-worthy show" was written by Penri Roberts, Linda Gittins and the late Derec Williams. More from the County Times: Ahead of the open-air show, roads will be closed, and a stage will be set outside the Old Market Hall and Town Hall, near to the Trewythen Arms where three of the Chartist ringleaders were imprisoned, in Llanidloes' Great Oak Street. Llanidloes Town Council is hosting the event, which they hope will bring hundreds of people to the area and support local businesses. Cllr Gareth Morgan praised Cwmni Theatr Maldwyn productions as a "brilliant" organisation that is well known throughout Wales and England for putting on "sell-out" shows. Town clerk David Powell said non-Welsh speaking friends had seen the show and said it was "the best thing they've ever seen". Cllr Andrew Morel added that the production was an "absolutely superb" idea, while Mayor Cllr Dr John Glyn Hughes said it was "very good for the town". Pum Diwrnod o Ryddid will be performed free-of-charge in Great Oak Street, Llanidloes at 7pm on Sunday, September 14.
