Cricket, which made its only appearance in the Olympics at the Paris Games in 1900, was included in the Los Angeles Olympics after an IOC meeting in Mumbai in October 2023. It joins five new sports at LA28 – baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes) and squash. Fairgrounds in Pomona, a temporary stadium in Southern California, has been selected as the venue for cricket at the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028, which will feature six teams each in the men's and women's competitions. The T20 format, which is recognised as the vehicle for the growth of the game by the ICC, has also featured in other multi-sport events in recent years. The Asian Games in 2010, 2014 and 2023 featured both men's and women's T20 competitions while the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games staged a women's competition.

The Indian shooting team celebrated Olympic Day on Monday with a sense of confidence about their continued success in upcoming Olympic events. At the Paris Games last year, India sent a 21-member team to compete in all 15 shooting events. Manu Bhaker made history by winning two medals in the women's 10m air pistol event and the 10m air pistol mixed team event alongside Sarabjot Singh. She became the only Indian athlete to win two medals in a single Olympic edition. Swapnil Kusale also made history by securing India's only Olympic medal in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions. With three out of six medals at the 2024 Olympics being won by shooters, the sport gained immense popularity in India, and the athletes received global recognition. Following their success at the recently concluded ISSF World Cup 2025 in Munich, where Indian shooters clinched four medals—two gold and two bronze—they expressed hopes of maintaining their winning streak in the future. They aim for greater success at the next Olympic edition in Los Angeles, USA, in 2028. Speaking on the significance of Olympic Day, Paris Games bronze medallist Sarabjot stated, 'This day is an important one for all of us and it reminds us of the efforts we all put in to earn the opportunity to compete in the biggest sporting event. For an athlete, a chance to represent the nation on the Olympic stage is the highest achievement. For me, to win a medal and stand on the podium is a memory that I will cherish forever." He further added, 'Our success at the Paris Olympics and the recent shooting events this year has truly sparked a fire within all the athletes to do our best. We are confident that the Indian shooters will win even more medals in LA and continue to make the nation proud." Paris Olympics medal-winning shooter Kusale echoed Sarabjot's sentiments, stating, 'Because of our success last year at the Games, all of us feel excited to celebrate the Olympic Day this year. We feel the eyes of the nation are upon us now and the entire country is praying and wishing for our success in each and every competition." 'While it is an additional responsibility to repay their faith, it also motivates us to continue to do better and make the nation proud. Veteran Indian hockey forward Lalit Upadhyay has called time on his illustrious international career, drawing curtains on over a decade-long journey that saw him be a part of the teams that won bronze medals in Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games. From making his debut at the 2014 World Cup to standing tall on the Olympic podium twice, Lalit's career is a time-line of some of Indian hockey's biggest milestones in the modern era. He was a crucial part of the squad that scripted history at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, helping India clinch a long-awaited bronze medal, and repeated the feat at the Paris Games in 2024, reinforcing his reputation as a big-match player. "This journey began in a small village, with limited resources but limitless dreams," Lalit announced his decision through a heartfelt social media post shortly after India's final match of the European leg of the FIH Pro League 2024-25 season against Belgium on Sunday. "From facing a sting operation to standing on the Olympic podium — not once, but twice -- it's been a path full of challenges, growth, and unforgettable pride," Lalit posted. "Becoming an Olympian from my city after 26 years is something I'll always carry with honor and gratitude," he added. A natural play-maker with an uncanny knack for scoring goals, Lalit played 183 matches for India at the senior level, scoring 67 goals. Over the years, he became a trusted name in India's forward line, known for his versatility, on-field intelligence, and calm demeanour in high-pressure situations. The 31-year-old's final appearance in the Indian jersey came against Australia on June 15. Reflecting on Lalit's contribution, Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey said, "Lalit has been one of the most graceful and dedicated forwards of his generation. Whether it was a crucial Olympic match or a league game, he always wore the Indian jersey with pride and played with heart. "His journey from the narrow lanes of Varanasi to standing on the Olympic podium twice is nothing short of inspirational. We thank him for his selfless service to Indian hockey and wish him the very best for the next phase of his life." Beyond the Olympics, Lalit was instrumental in India's victories at the 2016 Asian Champions Trophy, 2017 Asia Cup --where he netted four goals -- and multiple other podium finishes. His medal-laden career includes a bronze at the 2017 Hockey World League Final 2017, silver at the 2018 Champions Trophy, bronze at the 2018 Asian Games, and gold at the 2018 Asian Champions Trophy. He was also a part of the squads that finished third in the FIH Pro League 2021-22 and won gold at the 2022 Asian Games. In recognition of his contributions to Indian hockey, Lalit was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 2021.
