Vancouver police officer retires after demotion, suspension for sexual harassment
Keiron McConnell had been the VPD's longest-serving sergeant when he was demoted.
"McConnell has retired and is no longer a serving member of the Vancouver Police Department," the VPD said in an emailed statement. The department provided no additional information.
McConnell was the subject of disciplinary proceedings in the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner earlier this year.
The complaints concerned incidents that took place between 2015 and 2019, including sending unwanted sexualized messages to two female officers who worked under his command when he was one of the leaders of the gang squad. McConnell — who first joined the VPD reserves in 1988 — was promoted to sergeant in 2004, becoming part of the leadership of the VPD's gang squad while also earning a doctorate that saw him teach at Royal Roads, Kwantlen and Simon Fraser universities.
Three other women, who were students at the universities where he taught, were also targeted by McConnell.
Another female officer, who was the first to come forward, had her complaint dismissed as part of a deal that led McConnell to admit to sexually harassing the five other women.

She is asking the judge in the case to issue a "public admonishment" of the attorney, Bryan Freedman, and to order that he pay unspecified legal fees. Over the past five months, Freedman "has engaged in a press tour designed to damage Ms. Lively's character and credibility," including by calling her a liar, a "narcissist," and a "Hollywood elite," her lawyers complain in seeking sanctions. The latest escalation began Monday afternoon, with a letter from Lively's attorneys accusing Freedman of engaging in "an ongoing character attack" designed "to undermine Ms. Lively's credibility and taint the jury pool." Hours later, Lively's team upped the ante by filing notice that they are seeking sanctions against Freedman for allegedly violating the professional conduct rules of New York, where her federal sexual harassment lawsuit is filed. The state's attorney professional conduct rules bar pretrial statements attacking the character, credibility, and reputation of a legal opponent. "Ms. Lively respectfully submits that the Court should impose sanctions against Mr. Freedman as a consequence of his relentless media campaign to harm Ms. Lively's character, credibility, and reputation," her lawyers tell US District Judge Lewis Liman. An attached memorandum explains the reasons Lively's side is seeking sanctions. Freedman has made public statements, including in the entertainment gossip site TMZ, accusing Lively of being "afraid of the truth" and of being a "privileged elite" who has been "abusing our legal system," the memorandum says. "During one interview conducted by his former client, Megyn Kelly, Mr. Freedman made numerous disparaging comments about Ms. Lively while Ms. Kelly referred to Ms. Lively as a 'bitch,'" the memorandum says. This was "an assertion which Mr. Freedman endorsed in a lengthy discussion of Ms. Lively's character, noting that Ms. Lively appeared (to him) to be a 'narcissist,'" it says. A three-page letter her team filed earlier Monday likewise accused Freedman of creating a "media circus" by leaking to "the tabloids" details of the deposition she gave on Friday, under questioning by attorneys for Baldoni and his production company, Wayfarer Studios. Baldoni himself attended, TMZ posted soon after the deposition, in a story headlined "Justin Baldoni is in the room!!!" the letter from Lively's legal team complains. "Consistent with their goal of creating a media circus around Ms. Lively's deposition, it also appears that the Wayfarer Defendants immediately leaked details from the deposition to the tabloid media," reads the letter, signed by Lively's attorney Esra Hudson. "This began by selectively sharing from a 'source in the room' that Mr. Baldoni was in attendance, apparently to advance a storyline that the deposition was a face-to-face showdown between Mr. Baldoni and Ms. Lively," the letter reads. The letter also complains that Freedman also immediately posted a sealed copy of the 292-page transcript of the Lively deposition in the court file, "with no plausible legal reason to do so." Freedman and his own attorney did not immediately respond to requests from Business Insider for comment on Lively's accusations. At the urging of Lively's team in February, Judge Lewis Liman ordered both sides to adhere to the New York Rules of Professional Conduct, which forbid character attacks on the opposing side. In the motion on Monday, Lively's team argues that Freedman began violating the order almost immediately with 'biased and inflammatory pre-trial indictments of Ms. Lively's character, credibility and reputation.' The motion cites interviews and statements Freedman has given to TMZ, People, Billy Bush and Megyn Kelly. In one such interview, Freedman suggested to TMZ that Lively is 'afraid of the truth' and suggested that she might not show up to her deposition. Lively was deposed last Thursday. On Friday, Baldoni's attorneys filed a motion in a discovery dispute, which included a sealed copy of Lively's deposition transcript as an exhibit. Lively's team argued Monday that the 292-page transcript — which remains sealed for now — should be stricken from the court record. A deposition typically would remain confidential, except for limited excerpts required to make legal arguments. In a motion, Lively's team alleged that Baldoni's team is using the deposition to pursue a PR strategy — either forcing it into the public record, or forcing Lively's team to ask that it remain under seal. 'The Wayfarer Defendants and their counsel hope to make Ms. Lively defend the continued sealing of the transcript so they can advance a false narrative that Ms. Lively is afraid of her deposition testimony becoming public, which is entirely untrue and deeply harmful,' Lively's lawyers wrote. In the sanctions motion, Lively's team argued that Freedman was engaged in a 'public relations stunt,' and that his conduct raises concerns about misleading statements that could sway the jury pool. Lively is seeking a public reprimand and attorneys' fees. Motorcyclist killed in Highway 1 crash, say Langley RCMP
A motorcyclist has died after a crash on Highway 1 in Langley, B.C., Saturday evening, police say. Langley RCMP say emergency services responded to the collision in the westbound lanes of the highway between 264th and 248th streets at around 8:22 p.m. Despite life-saving efforts by paramedics and firefighters, the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. "Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life," Sgt. Zynal Sharoom with Langley RCMP said in a statement Monday. Mounties say collision analysts, BC Highway Patrol and Langley RCMP are now investigating. According to DriveBC, westbound lanes between 264th and 232nd streets were closed for over eight hours and reopened around 5 a.m. Sunday.
