Denis Villeneuve unveiled a new director of James Bond

Yahoo7 hours ago

Denis Villeneuve will helm the next James Bond film. Despite there still being no actor confirmed to take over from Daniel Craig as the suave spy after he hung up his tuxedo in 2021's No Time To Die, the Dune and Blade Runner 2049 helmer has been unveiled as the director. He takes over the job from Cary Joji Fukunaga. Villeneuve, 57, has vowed to "honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come." In a statement, he said: "Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr No with Sean Connery. "To me, he's sacred territory. I intend to honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come." His promise comes amid much discussion surrounding the blockbuster action franchise and the hope that it will be entirely overhauled in its next era. Amazon MGM Studios, Mike Hopkins, commented: "Denis has delivered compelling worlds, dynamic visuals, complex characters, and - most importantly - the immersive storytelling that global audiences yearn to experience in theatres. "James Bond is in the hands of one of today's greatest filmmakers and we cannot wait to get started on 007's next adventure." Earlier this year, Amazon Studios took control of the franchise from Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, while Amy Pascal and David Heyman are attached to produce the next film in the super spy series. Speaking at CinemaCon in April, Amazon MGM executives Courtenay Valenti and Sue Kroll told the convention: "We are committed to honouring the legacy of this iconic character while bringing a fresh, exotic new chapter to audiences around the world alongside Amy and David. "They're both in London getting started and couldn't be here tonight, but we wanted to thank them for what we know to make an incredible partnership.' As for the next Bond, Aaron Taylor-Johnson recently hinted he could be 007. The 35-year-old actor has been heavily rumoured to be the next Bond and gave a very coy response when asked about what he'll be doing after working on 28 Years Later. Quizzed by Deadline at the horror movie's premiere on June 18, he said: "I can't talk about it." Taylor-Johnson was already being led away before the question was asked, and flashed a smile after his cryptic answer. A few weeks prior, the Hollywood star was announced as a global ambassador for Swiss brand Omega, which has been the Bond franchise's go-to watch brand since 1995's GoldenEye, with every 007 since Pierce Brosnan wearing their timepieces on screen. Taylor-Johnson said at the time: "I have always had an appreciation for timepieces, but especially for Omega. 'Now, after visiting the factory, I am in awe of the skill required to manufacture such a luxurious product.' Meanwhile, Omega's CEO Raynald Aeschlimann praised him as a "versatile actor with a range that covers action, thriller, romance, and much more".

Doug Liman Teams with Google for 'Immersive Spatial Film' That Lets You Enter the Story — GeekTyrant

Google recently launched 100 Zeros, a new content initiative in partnership with Range Media Partners, aimed at pushing storytelling into uncharted territory, and one of the first people they've brought along for the ride? Filmmaker Doug Liman, the guy behind Edge of Tomorrow , The Bourne Identity , and, most recently, Road House . Liman is developing what Google is calling an 'immersive spatial film', and while speaking at a fireside chat during Cannes, Neil Parris, Google's Head of Filmmaker Partnerships, described the project as 'an original 180° immersive short film.' It'll premiere on Asteroid, Google's upcoming XR app, and it sounds like something between a movie, a game, and a live conversation. Parris explained: 'The film, a high-stakes action thriller, is about a group of strangers who risk it all by taking an old rocket to mine a near-earth asteroid for a chance at unimaginable wealth. 'After the film, the audience enters the story when they receive a call from one of the characters who was left behind on the asteroid. The conversation between the AI-powered character and the player drives the extension of the story beyond the linear film.' So, it's not just sit-and-watch, you also talk to the story. The film becomes a kind of launching pad (literally and figuratively), and what happens after depends on how you interact with the characters. Think immersive action mixed with AI-powered narrative design. It's set to drop later this year, timed with the launch of Project Moohan, the XR headset built by Google and Samsung. This is all part of a larger movement by Google to back creators willing to experiment with new tools, and maybe even rethink what storytelling looks like. Parris said: 'We've started a production vehicle called 100 Zeros in partnership with Range, which is really meant to help Google meet filmmakers where they are. And is focused on putting amazing stories into the world and enabling them across multiple ways.' The session also featured Range co-founder Peter Micelli and filmmaker Sean Douglas, both part of a new program called AI On Screen, which commissions short films exploring the evolving relationship between humanity and artificial intelligence. Micelli said: 'When we started the programme, the number one intent for Range and Google was to get artists to participate and start a dialogue.' What that dialogue is shaping into is still evolving, but the goal is to push boundaries, embrace change, and reimagine the future of how stories are told and experienced. Micelli added: 'Profound change is coming. At Range, we view it as a very exciting change. You know, they said broadcast networks were going to die in 2020, streaming was going to kill everything. 'You constantly hear these patterns, and behind those patterns is a shift in technology that forces change.' And yet, the core of it all stays the same. 'The thing that doesn't shift is human beings wanting to be around storytelling. It is fundamental for us all. We care deeply about telling stories. How those stories get to you is what will always change.' With Liman's asteroid thriller and an AI character waiting to call you afterward, it looks like the next shift has already begun. Denis Villeneuve once said he'd 'deeply love' to make a James Bond movie. Amazon just hired him — and 007 fans seem to approve.

James Bond fans, rejoice. Amazon has picked Denis Villeneuve to direct the first 007 movie since it bought Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for $8.5 billion in 2022. The idea of a new take on the character is a daunting prospect after Daniel Craig's 15-year tenure ended with " No Time to Die." The 2021 film ends as 007 goes out in a sacrificial blaze of glory to save his partner Madeleine Swann (Lea Seydoux) and their daughter Mathilde (Lisa-Dorah Sonnet). Now, Amazon is working on rebooting the James Bond franchise, a prospect that's worried fans since the MGM acquisition. Many joked that the streamer would Marvel-ize the property with spinoffs about characters such as Moneypenny, Q, or M. I can see it now. Q and M prequels, a Miss Moneypenny spinoff and a Blofeld series depicting him as an anti-hero — LifeMi (@LifeMi1987) February 20, 2025 However, Amazon announced on Wednesday that Villeneuve had signed on to direct the next film in the series. His wife, Tanya LaPointe, has also joined the project as an executive producer. Villeneuve said in a press release: "Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since 'Dr. No' with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor." It's something of a dream come true for Villeneuve, who told the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast in 2021 he "would deeply love to one day make a James Bond movie," before calling it a "big challenge to reboot after what Daniel did." Villeneuve's movies including " Arrival," "Blade Runner 2049," and " Dune" have won 11 Oscars from 33 nominations, and many are taking this as a sign that Amazon is approaching "James Bond" seriously by working with an auteur. Fans on X pointed to Villeneuve's 2015 crime thriller "Sicario" as a sign that the director is the right choice for Bond. The director behind the Sicario border scene getting to make the next phase of James Bond is incredible stuff. It almost doesn't matter who they cast as Bond, they're going to be in good hands. And I'd argue the 1st films were the best for the last two runs (GoldenEye and Casino… — Scott Kacsmar (@ScottKacsmar) June 26, 2025 The person who directed this will be directing new James Bond. Denis Villeneuve — The Cinéprism (@TheCineprism) June 26, 2025 If Denis Villeneuve does anything like this with the next James Bond movie, we're in for a treat. — The Sting (@TheStingisBack) June 26, 2025 "Sicario" follows an FBI agent who joins a ruthless CIA task force whose goal is to dismantle a violent drug cartel in Mexico, and it has a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It's worth noting that the new "James Bond" project does not have a screenwriter attached yet, and it isn't clear if Villeneuve already has a story in mind. The director is preparing to start shooting " Dune: Part Three" later this year, so it could be some time before the next version of Bond gets into production. Amazon's willingness to wait for Villeneuve suggests the studio is willing to wait rather than rush out a new 007.

Miley Cyrus Beats Her Own Record As Her New Album Disappears

Miley Cyrus's Something Beautiful vanishes from the Billboard 200 after only two weeks on the tally, ... More despite the fact that it debuted at No. 4. PARIS, FRANCE - JUNE 18: (Exclusive Coverage) Miley Cyrus performs during Miley Cyrus Billions Club Series Paris at Maxim's on June 18, 2025 in Paris, France. (Photo byfor Spotify) When Miley Cyrus released her new album Something Beautiful on May 30, there was quite a lot of excitement surrounding the title. The pop star was still riding high off the incredible success of her previous full-length Endless Summer Vacation and its lead single "Flowers." That track earned the singer her first several Grammys and became not just a smash, but perhaps the biggest win in her catalog. None of the tunes pushed from Something Beautiful have become even top 40 successes on the Hot 100 in the United States, but despite that, there was still plenty of buzz surrounding the full-length. Once Something Beautiful got off to a fair start, it quickly became clear that interest in the project was waning. Now, less than a month after its release, the project has disappeared from every ranking in the country. Miley Cyrus Falls Off the Billboard 200 Just three tracking weeks into its lifespan, Something Beautiful has completely vanished from all Billboard charts. The set initially debuted inside the top 10 on multiple tallies, including the Billboard 200, Top Album Sales, and Vinyl Albums lists. Less than a month later, it's no longer generating enough pure purchases, not is it being consumed in large enough numbers, to appear on any ranking. Something Beautiful Lasted Just Two Weeks Something Beautiful launched on the Billboard 200 at No. 4. The set shifted 44,000 units during its first tracking frame. While a top five opening is always worthy of applause, that relatively low sum was cause for concern. Such thoughts were validated just days later when, in its second frame on the Billboard 200 — the all-encompassing ranking of the most consumed albums in the country — the project dipped nearly 100 spaces. Something Beautiful plunged from No. 4 to No. 102. It held there for several days, but now, after Billboard refreshed its rankings once again, Cyrus's latest effort can no longer be found. Miley Cyrus Beats Her Own Unfortunate Record Something Beautiful now stands as Cyrus's shortest-charting title on the Billboard 200. Before its arrival, that distinction was held by Hannah Montana: Hits Remixed. While that 2008 project only peaked at No. 103, it managed to remain on the list for five frames. To put Something Beautiful's short tenure into further perspective, Endless Summer Vacation, which arrived in March 2023, racked up 59 stays on the Billboard 200 — even though it only peaked one slot higher.
