France Shuts Down Nuclear Power Plant Amid Heatwave

Israa Farhan
French state-owned utility company Électricité de France (EDF) has temporarily
shut
down the Golfech nuclear power station in southern France due to an ongoing extreme heatwave affecting the region.
The shutdown, which took place late on Sunday, was initiated to prevent a rise in the temperature of the Garonne River, the source of cooling water for the plant. EDF officials stated that high summer temperatures were driving river water levels to potentially exceed safety limits.
Weather forecasts indicated that the water temperature of the Garonne River could reach 28°C (82.4°F) on Monday, a level that would compromise the plant's ability to safely manage its cooling systems without causing environmental harm.
EDF has not yet disclosed how long the Golfech plant will remain offline.
The shutdown comes as France battles a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring to as high as 42°C (107.6°F) in some areas. Meteorological authorities expect the extreme conditions to persist until midweek.

Egyptian Sources: Proposal Includes 60-Day Truce in Gaza

Ahmed Emam Egyptian sources have outlined the main points of a proposal aimed at halting the conflict in Gaza for 60 days, AlQahera News reported on Monday. According to the sources, the initiative calls for a temporary cessation of military operations, alongside the redeployment of Israeli forces to areas near the border. The move is intended to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid in volumes that meet the needs of the population in Gaza. The proposal also includes an exchange of prisoners and captives. A number of Palestinian detainees would be released in return for half of the Israelis currently held in Gaza. In addition, the plan envisions the release of 10 Israeli hostages alive, as well as the transfer of 18 bodies — half the total of 36 Israelis reported dead. The sources added that negotiations on a broader agreement or permanent ceasefire would begin on the first day of the truce. Egypt has been playing a central role in mediation efforts, aiming to de-escalate the conflict and create conditions for a lasting settlement. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated

OPEN// FM highlights central role of Arish logistics hub in Gaza aid operations

ARISH, Egypt, Aug 18 (MENA) – Foreign Affiars, Emigration and Expatriates Minister Badr Abdelatty on Monday praised the central role of the Egyptian Red Crescent's main logistics hub in Arish in coordinating the flow of humanitarian, medical, and relief aid into the war-ravaged Gaza. During a joint visit with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa, Abdelatty inspected the hub's operations, commending its efficiency in handling aid deliveries. The visit was also attended by Social Solidarity Minister Maya Morsy. Abdelatty said Egypt had facilitated the entry of over 550,000 tons of aid—more than 70% of total humanitarian assistance sent to Gaza—thanks to enhanced logistical coordination. The delegation toured the facility, which serves as a key link in Egypt's aid response, observing sorting, packaging and distribution processes aimed at streamlining the supply chain to the besieged enclave.
