Andhra's Narakoduru set for digital makeover under National Smart Village Pilot project
It is one of the three villages chosen across India-alongside counterparts in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh-for this ambitious initiative aimed at delivering modern public services through digital governance, infrastructure development, and citizen-centric innovation.
The Union Ministry of Telecommunications has been tasked with implementing the project and evaluating its feasibility on a national scale. Chebrolu Tahsildar Srinivasa Sharma confirmed that central teams have already visited Narakoduru twice, interacted with locals, and collected feedback through a detailed questionnaire.
'An awareness video was screened for villagers, and inputs from the community will shape the project's rollout,' he told TNIE. The selection of Narakoduru is credited largely to the efforts of Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communication Dr Pemmasani Chandrasekhar and Ponnur MLA Dhulipalla Narendra Kumar.

Collector chairs review meet for telecom pilot project in MP's Ari-Umri village
Guna, Madhya Pradesh: The collector of Guna in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday held a review meeting for a pilot project of the Union Ministry of Telecommunications in Umri gram panchayat that aims to expand urban level digital, medical, education and communication facilities in rural areas. Only three villages across the country have been selected for this project, including Ari-Umri village , Guna collector Kishore Kumar Kanyal said. The other two villages selected for the project under Samriddh Village initiative are Narakoduru in Andhra Pradesh and Chaurawala in Uttar Pradesh. Guna is the parliamentary constituency of Union Telecommunications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia . "The objective of the scheme is to expand urban level digital, medical, education and communication facilities in rural areas. This initiative is being operated under Samriddh Gram Pilot Program, which is currently in the pilot phase. Under the project, 50 types of medical investigation facilities, digital test records, and modern equipment will be made available," Kanyal said. "Technical facilities like cities in the field of education will now be implemented in rural schools as well. The use of latest technologies in the field of agriculture and communication will ensure work and services done in a faster and simpler manner," he added. Under this project, a detailed digital database of the village will be prepared, including housing, population, employment, education, health status and others, which will help in assessing the impact and changes after the implementation of the scheme, he said. In the meeting, Kanyal directed District Panchayat CEO Gaurav Khare to provide systematic office space for the project so that compilation, monitoring and operation of all related information can be done smoothly.

Centre working to launch e-trucks in country
BENGALURU: With increasing emphasis being laid on electric vehicles (EVs) in the country, including cars, two-wheelers, three-wheelers and buses, the Centre is now looking at introducing electric trucks on Indian roads. Though trucks as a vehicle are a part of the Centre's EV policy, little progress has been made on the road, and the NITI Aayog is now working with the Centre on making it a reality. NITI Aayog Senior Energy Expert (Energy Transmission) Deepak Bawari told TNIE that they were working on many projects, including electric trucks. The others in the list include distribution of energy reusables and efficiency models for households and corporates. Bawari added that despite the battery size and capacity, launching e-buses was easy because destinations and routes are predefined, but that is not the case with e-trucks. There are logistical and practical issues like vehicle and battery costs, presence of charging stations on all highways, and time spent in charging batteries. Discussions with stakeholders, truck manufacturers, and owners are on to understand issues and iron them out. Some of the problems that have been cited by truckers is a lack of support from financial institutions. A normal diesel truck costs around Rs 40 lakh, while an EV will cost around Rs 1.3 crore. However, a few truck manufacturers have launched e-trucks for in-house transportation, while there is demand for electric trucks from shipping, logistics sector, and other service providers. Meanwhile, Power Ministry sources said it can become a reality if all state governments collectively work on it. Policies of all state governments should be in sync, not just with the Centre, but also with each other. This is because the cost of charging and battery services needs to be uniform. This will improve the transportation sector, address vehicular pollution, and track truck movements.

TN Spark launched at 96 government schools in Kovai
COIMBATORE: The TN Spark initiative, which was recently launched by the school education department, has been introduced at 96 government higher secondary schools in Coimbatore district. The aim of this initiative is to teach government school students from classes 6 to 9 how to handle AI tools, the fundamentals of computer science, and online tools using the hi-tech labs. A top educational officer from the district school education department told TNIE that the first phase of training for computer science teachers and Administrative-cum-Instructors (AIs) staff of 23 government schools was recently completed as part of this initiative. He said the second phase of training will be conducted for teachers and AI staff in the coming weeks. "In this training, teachers and staff are taught what AI is and how to handle it efficiently. Before that, it is essential for students to know how to use computer fundamentals, which we have provided training for. We also trained them on online tools such as image and math tools, which are important for daily use," he said. He said that after completing this training, teachers and AI staff will impart these skills to students at the hi-tech labs soon, and a special period will be allocated for this purpose. Further, he said books will be distributed to the schools soon. K Prema, a computer science teacher in Coimbatore, told TNIE that the training was good and that through this initiative, students will be able to learn programmes in an advanced level.
