Vadodara climbs rankings, gets ‘Promising City' recognition

Vadodara: Climbing up the cleanliness rankings, Vadodara secured the 18th position in the Swachh Survekshan 2024 among cities with a population of over 10 lakh. The city scored 10,713 out of 12,500 points and was also recognised among 12 urban centres as a 'Promising Swachh Shehar'.

The improvement comes after the city ranked 33rd last year. Officials noted that Vadodara's performance still fell short of its earlier rankings — eighth in 2021 and 14th in 2022 — reflecting a dip from its past achievements.
To reverse the downward trend, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) had engaged a consultancy firm that previously worked with the Indore Municipal Corporation, a consistent top performer in the survey.
Despite steps taken by the civic body in waste management and processing, the results have been inconsistent.

MC officials pointed out that the changing parameters and methodology of the Swachh Survekshan surveys over the years made direct comparisons difficult. They said factors such as documentation, public feedback and revised survey formats play a bigger role in rankings than visible cleanliness alone.
In this year's survey, the city lost marks in the garbage-free city assessment and other survey parameters — shortcomings officials acknowledged were visible on the ground. In response, the VMC has initiated stricter measures, including fines, to address sanitation lapses.
Standing committee chairman Sheetal Mistry, who received the award in Delhi alongside senior VMC officials, expressed optimism about future rankings. He said ongoing efforts such as developing refuse transport stations and a material recovery facility will significantly improve the city's performance. "The Promising Swachh Shehar award itself is an acknowledgment of Vadodara's potential to do better," he said.

Green, clean, keen: Gujarat chief minister sets stage for development marathon

Gandhinagar: Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel has called on all cities and towns in the state to draw up ambitious development blueprints and execute them with urgency as part of Urban Development Year 2025. The goal: to set new national benchmarks in sustainable, citizen-centric urban growth and foster healthy competition between Gujarat's urban centres. Speaking at the launch of Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation's Development Vision Plan on the state capital's 61st Foundation Day, the CM honoured the city's 'swachhata warriors' for their role in helping Gandhinagar achieve national acclaim in Swachh Survekshan rankings in the 3 lakh-1 million population category. "Once known as a green city, Gandhinagar is now proudly a clean city too. And, it's everyone's responsibility to keep it that way," he said. Patel recalled that it was in 2005, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tenure as CM, that the first Urban Development Year was celebrated. The initiative then sparked a shift from focusing solely on infrastructure to including smart services, technology integration, and forward-looking planning. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? Among key campaigns he highlighted were 'Catch the Rain' for water harvesting, urban forest expansion, the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' tree-planting drive, rooftop solar adoption, and electric mobility — all geared toward greener, more resilient cities. She pointed out that Gandhinagar's municipal budget has grown from Rs 7.47 crore in 2010 to a projected Rs 1,718 crore for 2025–26 — a 230-fold jump. VMC probe into inflated fire dept purchases delayed

Vadodara: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has formed a four-member preliminary inquiry committee to investigate alleged irregularities in the procurement of safety, rescue, and other equipment for the fire department. While the panel was initially expected to submit its report this week, officials said it may take more time. The civic body initiated the inquiry after reports surfaced about highly inflated rates for several items procured earlier this year from a Surat-based agency, for which the VMC had already made payments of Rs 3.81 crore. The purchases included 24 items ranging from emergency whistles and water bottles to inflatable rubber rescue boats and motors for such boats. The purchase order, issued in April, mentioned unusually high prices for several items such as whistles, water bottles, mosquito nets, and pocket knives. The glaring price discrepancies prompted the civic body to launch an internal inquiry. Sources said a third party managed the procurement, and the bills were reviewed by the audit department before payment was cleared. However, despite these checks, no clarifications were sought on the inflated rates. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRIs Living In Portugal Are Eligible For INR 2 Lakh Monthly Pension.
