Toyota, Honda brace for impact after Trump auto tariffs, stronger yen
TOYOTA Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. earnings will paint a mixed picture as a stronger yen and US auto tariffs eat into profit, despite resilient unit sales. Toyota likely saw a dip in first-quarter operating profit, according to estimates. While the company posted record global sales in the first half driven by a surge in pre-tariff purchases, Bloomberg Intelligence said the automaker is likely weighed down by factors including supply chain costs. Honda's profit likely fell for the same reasons, according to BI. In June, Japanese automakers slashed US export prices by 19%, the biggest drop since records going back to 2016, sacrificing margins to remain competitive through the tariff turmoil. Japan's defense sector will also be in focus, as rising government spending will support sales and margin growth at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. Tariff-related pressures are expected to weigh on Kawasaki Heavy's power-sports segment, while its defense unit is projected to drive margin expansion, Jefferies analyst Sho Fukuhara said. Profit margins at Mitsubishi Heavy's aircraft, defense and space business could exceed targets, supported by a gradual recovery in Boeing 787 production, BI said. –BLOOMBERG

Host clubs face the heat for exploitation
'Romance' for hire: A male host waiting for customers at a host club in the Kabukicho area of Tokyo. — AFP THE country is waging war on 'host clubs' – where men entertain women willing to pay for romance, but authorities and industry insiders say customers have long been scammed and saddled with debt. Neatly coiffured, well-dressed 'hosts' bedazzle women with sweet talk and the mirage of intimacy at glitzy establishments in big Japanese cities. In return, the women pay inflated prices for champagne and other expensive drinks while they flirt, sometimes splurging tens of thousands of dollars a night. Authorities are clamping down because of allegations that some women are being tricked into towering debts by hosts, and even into sex work to pay them off. Under a new law that took effect in June, taking advantage of women's romantic feelings to manipulate them into ordering overpriced drinks has been banned. This has sent shockwaves through an industry where pseudo-romance, from casual flirtation to after-hours sex, has long driven relationships with clients. John Reno, a star host in Tokyo's red-light district Kabukicho, said the move is 'unsurprising' after 'scammer-like hosts increased'. Hosts, he said, used to employ intimacy mainly to entertain women. But 'their mindset today is 'if you love me, then don't complain', silencing women and exploiting their emotional dependence,' the owner of Club J said. A growing number of victims have reported financial and sexual exploitation linked to these establishments. Official data shows there were around 2,800 host club-related cases reported to police in 2024, up from 2,100 two years before. These have ranged from hosts ordering drinks the clients did not ask for, to prostitution. Some hosts are racking up profits by introducing their cash-strapped clients to brokers known as 'scouts', who then send them into the sex trade, police say. Women, for their part, strive to work hard for their crush. 'These hosts in return promise them their effort will be rewarded with actual relationships or marriage,' Reno said. 'That's outright fraud,' he added, while denying that his Club J employees engage in any such practices. Difficulties such as poverty and abuse often make hosts the only escape for young women with low self-esteem, campaigners say. While high-flying businesswomen used to be the main clientele, girls 'with no place to be' are increasingly seeking refuge, Arata Sakamoto, head of non-profit Rescue Hub, said. The new law does not ban intimacy, but behaviour such as threatening to end relationships with clients if they refuse to order drinks. Another disruptive change is also rocking the industry. Police have notified clubs that billboard advertising hyping up the sales and popularity of individual hosts is no longer acceptable. The rationale is that these bombastic, neon-lit signs boasting 'No.1' status or 'multimillion' sales can fuel competition among hosts and push them further toward profit-mongering. — AFP

Factory output gain shows firms' resilience
Output rebound: A woman walks past an electronic screen in Tokyo. The gains are forecast to continue after the United States and Japan reached a trade agreement with terms considered more favourable to Japan than had been feared. — Reuters TOKYO: Japan's factory output unexpectedly rose in June, as manufacturers showed resilience even as US tariffs weighed on the nation's exports. Industrial production gained 1.7% from the previous month, the Industry Ministry reported yesterday. Output of transport equipment excluding cars was up 14.8%, and electronic parts and devices drove the gains. Economists had expected a 0.8% loss. Output increased 4% from a year earlier, topping expectations of a 1.3% gain. Output of autos, which faced tariffs totalling 27.5% on shipments to the United States during the period, nudged 0.1% higher from the prior month. Output for steel and non-ferrous metals declined by 0.5% after US President Donald Trump doubled the duty on US imports of steel and aluminium to 50% in early June. 'I think production increased in some areas to respond to rush demand in anticipation of the tariff hike,' said Yuichi Kodama, economist at Meiji Yasuda Research Institute. 'The trend is difficult to grasp due to such demand, but I think production largely remained flat on a quarterly basis.' Seasonally adjusted production advanced by 0.3% in the quarter through June from the previous period, reducing the risk that the economy may have fallen into a technical recession in the period. Bloomberg economist Taro Kimura said, 'The solid production print may prompt central bankers to reassess their cautious stance on US trade policy risks to Japan's growth. 'In our baseline scenario, the central bank will proceed with a 25 basis points rate hike in October.' The gains are forecast to continue after the United States and Japan reached a trade agreement with terms considered more favourable to Japan than had been feared. Last week's surprise deal will cut tariffs on US imports of Japanese cars to 15% and apply the same rate on other products. Inventories fell 0.4% in June, the third straight month of month-on-month declines, bringing the index down to 99.1, the lowest in just over three years. That indicates that manufacturers have room to add products in the months ahead. Manufacturers estimated monthly production will rise 1.8% in July and gain 0.8% in August, according to yesterday's release. Separately, retail sales exceeded estimates, rising 1% in June from May and increasing 2% from a year ago. Persistent inflation has kept consumer spending from posting sustained gains as households contending with higher costs for essential goods trimmed discretionary outlays. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, under pressure to do more to help households cope with inflation, has pledged cash handouts to spur consumption and undertaken steps to reduce utility costs. Ishiba's position was weakened substantially by his party's historic upper house election defeat earlier this month. He said he would like to remain in office to ensure the implementation of the trade deal. The production data come hours before the Bank of Japan's (BoJ) board concludes its latest policy meeting, where authorities are widely expected to keep the benchmark interest rate unchanged. The focus will be governor Kazuo Ueda's assessment of the recent trade deal with the United States. Officials see the possibility of mulling another interest rate hike this year after that agreement, a source said last week. 'It will take more time for the impact of tariffs to be confirmed in hard data, so the BoJ is unlikely to raise interest rates today,' Kodama said. — Bloomberg
