Ottawa should be ready to step in to prevent Air Canada strike: Chambers of commerce

CTV Newsa day ago
Two Maritime chambers of commerce are expressing concern over a potential Air Canada strike.
The union representing around 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants could signal its intent to strike if a deal isn't reached by the end of Tuesday.
The earliest flight attendants could potentially walk off the job is Saturday at 12:01 a.m. ET.
Since the union must provide 72-hours notice if it plans to strike, that means it could declare its plans for a work stoppage by Wednesday at 12:01 a.m. ET.
The Saint John Region Chamber of Commerce and the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce have written letters urging those involved in the labour dispute to come to an agreement and calling on the federal government to intervene if needed.
'A possible strike threatens to undermine critical national infrastructure at a pivotal moment for the Canadian economy. While respectful of the rights of workers to pursue fair compensation and working conditions, the chamber urges all parties to move urgently toward an equitable resolution that avoids disruption,' reads the letters.
The chambers highlight the serious implications of a service suspension and say the federal government should be ready to step in to prevent disruptions if an agreement is not negotiated.
'Canada today faces rising global trade pressures, shifting supply chain dynamics, and an urgent need for internal harmonization,' reads the letters.
'Our interprovincial connections and infrastructure have never been more critical to supporting shared prosperity and economic security.'
Air Canada said Monday it 'remains at the bargaining table and is focused on achieving a negotiated settlement' without any disruption to travel.
Flights are continuing to operate as scheduled, but the airline says it will notify customers via email and text message in advance of their travel if there are disruptions.
For passengers whose itineraries change mid-journey, Air Canada says it will explore all options to keep them travelling, including rebooking with other airlines.

Air Canada issues lockout notice as possible flight attendant strike hangs in the air

Air Canada has issued a 72-hour lockout notice to CUPE, representing 10,000 flight attendants, after the union announced plans to strike starting August 16, citing low wages and unpaid labour. The airline will begin cancelling flights on August 14, with a full suspension of Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge operations by August 16, affecting up to 130,000 daily passengers. Air Canada has requested government-imposed arbitration, claiming negotiations have reached an impasse, but CUPE rejected the offer, demanding more substantial improvements to working conditions Air Canada stock (TSX:AC) last traded at C$19.54 Air Canada (TSX:AC) has issued a 72-hour lockout notice to the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), representing 10,000 flight attendants at Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge, following the union's announcement of its intent to strike beginning August 16. The airline has begun a phased wind down of most operations, with full suspension of flights expected by Saturday. This content has been prepared as part of a partnership with Air Canada and is intended for informational purposes only. The move comes after eight months of negotiations failed to produce a tentative agreement. Despite federal conciliators' involvement and Air Canada's offer to enter binding arbitration, CUPE rejected the proposal, citing unresolved issues including low wages and unpaid labour during ground time. Air Canada claims its latest offer, tabled August 11, included a 38 per cent increase in total compensation over four years, improved pensions and benefits, and enhanced crew rest provisions—without demanding concessions. CUPE, however, maintains that the offer does not adequately address what it calls 'poverty wages' and systemic unpaid work. In response to the union's strike notice, Air Canada has requested government intervention under Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code to impose binding interest arbitration, citing recent precedents in rail, port, and airline labour disputes. The airline argues that a work stoppage would severely impact the Canadian economy and leave tens of thousands of travelers stranded, including 25,000 Canadians flown home daily from abroad. The airline's decision to lock out flight attendants and suspend operations during peak travel season has drawn criticism from labour advocates and passengers alike. While Air Canada Express flights operated by Jazz and PAL Airlines will continue, they account for only 20 per cent of the airline's daily traffic. The remaining 130,000 daily passengers face cancellations and uncertainty. 'However, the disappointing conduct of CUPE's negotiators and the union's stated intention to launch a strike puts us in a position where our only responsible course of action is to provide certainty by implementing an orderly suspension of Air Canada's and Air Canada Rouge's operations through a lockout,' Air Canada's president and chief executive, Michael Rousseau claimed in a news statement. Air Canada says the first round of flight cancellations will begin August 14, with more on August 15, and a full halt of Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flights by August 16. Customers affected by cancellations will be eligible for full refunds and may be rebooked on other carriers, though availability is limited due to summer travel demand. The airline has urged passengers not to go to airports unless their flights are confirmed and operating, and to use online tools for updates and rebooking. Contact center wait times are expected to be significantly elevated. CUPE's strike mandate, approved by 99.7 per cent of members, remains effective for 60 days. The union has emphasized that its members are seeking fair compensation and recognition for the full scope of their labour, not just time spent in the air. Air Canada is Canada's largest airline with a presence in more than 180 airports in Canada, the United States and internationally across six continents. Air Canada stock (TSX:AC) last traded at C$19.54. Though it has descended 12.22 per cent since the year began, it has flown 27.30 per cent higher since this time last year. KGC's Low Leverage Edge: Is Bigger Shareholder Value Awaiting?

Kinross Gold Corporation KGC remains committed to improving its leverage profile, thanks to strong free cash flow generation. It repaid $800 million of debt during 2024 and the remaining $200 million of its term loan in the first quarter of 2025. Moreover, KGC improved its net debt position to around $100 million at the end of the second quarter from $540 million in the prior quarter. Kinross' long-term debt-to-capitalization is 13.9%, below the Zacks Mining – Gold industry's 14.9%. KGC ended second-quarter 2025 with robust liquidity of roughly $2.8 billion, including cash and cash equivalents of more than $1.1 billion. Second-quarter free cash flow surged roughly 87% year over year and 74% from the preceding quarter, driven by the strength in gold prices and strong operating performance. Kinross' aggressive debt cut places it among the industry's leanest leveraged names and positions it strongly alongside its peers. As gold prices remain supportive and strong cash flow generation continues, KGC is expected to maintain this sharp pace of deleveraging moving ahead. Kinross expects to return a significant amount of capital to its shareholders while strengthening its balance sheet with a goal to repay its $500 million 2027 notes. Among KGC's peers, Agnico Eagle Mines Limited AEM has also made impressive strides in fortifying its balance sheet, underscoring its commitment to financial discipline. Agnico Eagle remains focused on paying down debt using excess cash, with long-term debt reducing by $550 million sequentially to $595 million at the end of the second quarter. Agnico Eagle ended the quarter with a significant net cash position of $963 million, driven by the increase in cash position and reduction of debt. Newmont Corporation NEM is balancing deleveraging with post-Newcrest acquisition integration and asset streamlining through strategic non-core divestments. Newmont retired $372 million of debt during the second quarter. Newmont ended the second quarter with net debt of $1,422 million, down from $3,221 million at the end of the prior quarter. The Zacks Rundown for KGC Kinross Gold's shares have shot up 108.5% year to date against the industry's rise of 72.2%, largely driven by the gold price rally. From a valuation standpoint, KGC is currently trading at a forward 12-month earnings multiple of 13.86, a 3.3% premium to the industry average of 13.42X. It carries a Value Score of B. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for KGC's 2025 and 2026 earnings implies a year-over-year rise of 102.9% and 2.2%, respectively. The EPS estimates for 2025 and 2026 have been trending higher over the past 60 days. KGC stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy). In a rare reversal of trends, more Americans visit Canada by car than vice versa

Vehicles approach the United States border crossing as seen from Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, Que., Thursday, April 10, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Graham Hughes As Canadian travel to the United States continues to decline, new data shows a notable tipping point: More Americans visited Canada this July than Canadians did the United States, in a reversal not seen in years. Statistics Canada's latest figures show that U.S. residents made 1.8 million trips into Canada by automobile last month, with only 1.7 million Canadian return trips from the United States. Canadian trips to the U.S. have outnumbered U.S.-Canada trips every July since before the COVID-19 pandemic, until now. July travel has declined in both directions since last year, with U.S. visitor totals down 7.4 per cent and Canadian return trips plunging 36.9 per cent, down for six and seven months in a row, respectively. 'Recent data on foreign travel suggest that Canadians' travel sentiment toward their southern neighbour has been shifting in early 2025,' a StatCan report from earlier this summer reads. 'It is currently unclear whether the change is temporary or part of a more permanent shift.' Girl Guides of Canada recently announced it would suspend excursions to the United States for an unspecified period of time, in a decision the organization said was linked to U.S. President Donald Trump's tightening border control policies. 'This decision is rooted in our commitment to inclusivity and the safety of all our members,' Girl Guides of Canada wrote in an email to CTV News. 'It was prompted by the recent restrictions put on equal entry into the United States, as some members may hold citizenship from non-Canadian countries and could be impacted by the restrictions.' As for air travel, Canada has seen an increase in visitors, with 1.4 million non-residents arriving this July, up just over three per cent from the same time in 2024. While most of this growth came from overseas travellers, U.S. visitors by air also increased 0.7 per cent. Overall, international arrivals to Canada are down 15.6 per cent from the same time last year, according to StatCan. With files from CTV News' Spencer Van Dyk
