Open leader Scottie Scheffler starts with birdie to dampen hopes of chasing pack
But he was, unsurprisingly, unfazed and despite finding the rough off the tee he struck a brilliant approach to inside a foot and immediately was seven ahead of the Northern Irishman.
Playing partner Haotong Lee also birdied so his overall lead remained four.

McIlroy birdied the second to reduce the gap to the leader back to six but there were no signs of the early fireworks of the previous day when he was three under through four on his way to a 66.
The Masters champion knew he would have to realistically better that if he were to stand a chance of winning his second Claret Jug but struggled for momentum and bundling a chip out of the rough way past the pin resulted in a dropped shot at the fourth he could ill afford.
Also back at eight under was playing partner Matt Fitzpatrick, who began the day one shot better off only to bogey the par-three third.
Bryson DeChambeau was also on that number through 16 holes after a six-birdie charge, while former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama carded seven birdies and one bogey in the group behind.

Son of Manchester United legend hits the target for Red Devils as SuperCup NI gets under way
Kai Rooney, son of the club's all-time record goalscorer and former SuperCup NI player himself Wayne, scored in a 3-0 win over West Cork Academy. They meet Rangers in a glamour game at the Coleraine Showgrounds tonight after a 1,000 crowd in sun-splashed Bushmills were treated to an impressive performance from a player with the perfect name to play for Scottish giants. Kyle Glasgow struck twice, his second a penalty, in a 5-0 win over County Tyrone, who conceded the final three goals late on. Substitute Ruairidh Hall also scored twice. County Down's Mason Ayre is hoping to fire his team all the way to the SuperCup NI Premier Final after he scored two spectacular goals in a 4-2 win over Intercontinental FA. Ayre came off the bench to hit a stunning half-volley before firing home a superb free-kick in injury-time after the American side had twice come from a goal down. Zak Magowan hit a wonderful free-kick strike himself midway through the first-half before the impressive Ben Quirino equalised from the penalty spot. Shea Trainor added to the array of special goals to restore Down's lead only for Sam Winik to reply from a low driven corner after an impressive save by Max Sykes. 'I don't usually score those too often, it was good to score both,' said Ayre. 'It's much more of a buzz when you score goals like that. 'Hopefully, we can make it all the way to the Final.' County Down now meet 2024 winners Brighton, who were 2-1 winners over County Armagh who the Seagulls defeated in the Final. AFC Bournemouth head Group B after they won 3-0 against County Fermanagh, and Hamilton Academical came from behind to draw 1-1 with Mexican side Tigres after missing a first-half penalty. County Londonderry won 2-1 in their derby with County Antrim and now face Southampton, 2-0 winners against Ichifuna of Japan. Mixed emotions for manager Darragh Peden following County Armagh Juniors' victory Darragh Peden confessed to being torn between the joy of victory and frustration over County Armagh Juniors' performance despite a winning start to the SuperCup NI. A goal from Alfie Davidson five minutes from time, when he let the ball run across his body before unleashing a shot into the bottom corner of the net, gave Armagh a 1-0 victory in their derby against County Tyrone. Up to then, it had been the quality of rival goalkeepers Aidan Cunningham of Armagh and Tyrone's Jake Morgan that kept the scoreline blank. 'I think we're a better quality team than what we showed,' said Peden. 'The coach in me is frustrated but I suppose the manager in me is feeling 'job done' and now we move on to the next game. 'It's always a balance between winning games and trying to do it with a wee bit more flair. For me, as Juniors manager, it is more than just results; it's an experience at the SuperCup.' That win was key for Armagh as their final Group A opponents Blackburn Rovers defeated Crewe Alexandra 4-1. It was a tough start for County Down, who gradually grew into their game against St Patrick's Athletic before going down to two second-half goals from Conor Hudson and Gethin Davies. West Ham and Plymouth Argyle finished 2-2 in the other Group D encounter. County Fermanagh also lost to southern opposition, 4-1 to Bohemians in Group C, while Celtic won 4-2 over Chicago City. Michael Mulholland scored twice for County Antrim while Fionnbharr Stiobhard got the third in a 3-0 win over County Londonderry, setting them up perfectly for today's clash with Tottenham Hotspur, who were 5-2 winners over Charlton Athletic with Ashiah Haughton-Sinclair scoring four of the Spurs goals. Crusaders' quest to retain Minor crown suffers blow after defeat to Shamrock Rovers Defending champions Crusaders' hopes of retaining their Minor title were dealt an early blow as they were defeated on the opening day at the SuperCup NI. While the Crues got off to the kind of start they didn't want, there were goals galore for two other Irish League clubs, who each hit four goals in their victories. The Crues were beaten 2-0 by Dublin giants Shamrock Rovers and that result sets up a hugely interesting Group A clash on day two as they now face Ballymena United in Castlerock today after the Sky Blues finished 4-2 winners over Ross County. Cliftonville also made an impressive start to the tournament by hitting four goals in their 4-1 success against Loughgall. That game was, however, overshadowed entertainment-wise by the other game in Group C as Leeds United and Surf Select from the USA shared six goals in a thrilling 3-3 draw. The Reds now face Surf Select today. It is all to play for in Group B after both games finished level. Glenavon and Linfield battled to a scoreless draw, while Kilmarnock drew 1-1 with Al Jazira Club of the UAE. Coleraine and Blackburn Rovers will do battle for control of Group D when they meet in Bushmills after both were victorious in their opening games of the tournament. Blackburn were 3-0 winners over IDA Bermuda, while Coleraine managed to squeeze out a 1-0 victory over Shankill Juniors.

Matthew Stevens reflects on 'up and down' snooker life ahead of Seniors bow
Matthew Stevens looks back philosophically on an up and down career so far, but is clear that it is far from finished yet, both on the professional tour and now the Seniors circuit. The 47-year-old became an iconic player in the late 1990s and early 2000s as he routinely reached the latter stages of the sport's biggest tournaments. Winning the UK Championship and Masters were the highlights, but two Crucible final defeats left him agonisingly close to becoming world champion. It is 22 years since his one and only ranking title, but sees the Seniors as a good chance to lift trophies again, starting with the new British Seniors Open, starting on Boxing Day in Derby. The Welshman will play alongside Jimmy White, Ken Doherty, Joe Perry, Dominic Dale, Alfie Burden and two as-yet-unannounced stars, who Stevens is hoping will be further past their peak than some candidates. 'I'm not getting any younger, so the more opportunities the better and it'll be a good opportunity,' Stevens told Metro of his Seniors debut. 'I don't know if Mark [Williams] or John [Higgins] are going to be in this tournament. With the change of the rules to all over-40s there could be some big names. You've got Bingham, Selby, Higgins, well, most of the top 16, to be honest. So I hope it's Tony Knowles and Neal Foulds!' SNOOKER IS COMING BACK TO DERBY! We're delighted to announce that the Seniors British Open 2025 will be held at Vaillant Live from 26th – 28th December 2025! 🎫 Tickets are available from just £15 and are on sale soon! — Vaillant Live (@vaillantlive) July 28, 2025 Stevens is not the force he once was but is still extremely capable and has started the new season well, unbeaten in eight matches. 'It's been a good start to the season,' he said. 'I felt like I was hitting the ball well. 'What you've seen with Joe Perry and Rob Milkins winning tournaments in the last few years, that does give you a boost, seeing them win. You feel you can do it yourself.' If Stevens were to triumph again it would be a very popular story as he has been viewed as an underachiever in the sport, partly due to tragic circumstances. His father Morrell unexpectedly died in 2001, which was a turning point in his life, while the loss of great friend Paul Hunter in 2006 was also an extremely difficult and impactful experience. Snooker has become less of a serious pursuit due to those tragedies and Stevens accepts that he has looked to enjoy himself more than really knuckle down to achieve success. Speaking last season, friend of the Welshman Stephen Maguire said both players could have won more tournaments with more focus. 'As me and Matthew Stevens say, we've got stories,' said Maguire. 'Not a lot of the boys have got stories, they've got titles but they've not got stories. Maybe it's a good thing, I don't know.' Asked if he sees it that way, Stevens said: 'Yeah, I suppose. I think we've had too much fun to be dominant in the game, but having said that, I wouldn't change anything. 'I've lived my life and that's the way it is, but I've had an up and down career off the table. So I don't really take the game too seriously. 'Maybe if things would have been slightly different off the table then my attitude would have been different, that's the way I look at it but I've enjoyed my career and hopefully I can still win one or two more things.' Explaining how much Morrell's death impacted his career, he said: 'Obviously my dad used to go everywhere with me and when he passed away, that really took the edge off. 'I still reached World finals and stuff after that, I won the UK after that. But I wasn't playing as much, I was just too inconsistent. 'When I did lose, it didn't really hurt it at all and that really hasn't changed. Obviously, you don't want to lose, and it does hurt for about 10 minutes afterwards, but that's about it. But that's the way life is, you know, things happen.' Stevens has tried to work with experts on improving his mentality for the game, but without much success. 'I did try it, but trying to talk sense into me, that's quite a hard thing to do,' he said. 'I do psychologists' heads in after 10 minutes and they just sack me off! You can't work out what's going on in my head.' It is far from doom and gloom, though, with a career to date that most players ever to pick up a cue would be absolutely thrilled with. More Trending Both on the professional tour and now in World Seniors action, Stevens is also clear to point out that he still believes he can lift trophies again. 'I've done all right,' he said of his career so far. 'A couple of World finals, won the UK, three UK finals, obviously won the Masters as well. I can't complain. I would have liked to have done more, but I'm not finished yet. 'I still love competing. Going up to Sheffield for the World Championship qualifiers especially. It's more of a challenge more than anything now. I enjoy playing the better players, youngsters coming through to show that I can still play. And that's when I think I do actually perform better.' It won't be youngsters he takes on at Vaillant Live in Derby on 26-28 December, but there will be a chance to become the British Seniors Open champion, live on Channel 5.
