Precious water goes down the drain as Parvati Nagar pipeline leaks for 10 Days

Nagpur: Barring the unseasonal rain of the last two days, the city has been sizzling under scorching summer. Even as the city stares at water scarcity, residents of Parvati Nagar in Kalamna are helplessly watching thousands of litres of clean, treated water go down the drain every day.

While water scarcity grips several parts of the city, in Parvati Nagar, four major leaks in a newly laid water pipeline haven't been unrepaired for over ten days. The spilled water is flooding homes, damaging property, apart from attracting snakes and scorpions into residential areas.
The leaking line was laid under the Amrut 2 project around six months ago. Locals allege that the trouble began when the line was charged about ten days ago, triggering multiple leaks across the stretch.
"There are four major leakage points," Nilesh Tighare, a local resident and Yuva Sena's Nagpur district chief, told TOI. He listed the leakage spots as near Mohtura Layout, inside Parvati Nagar, near a road turning in the locality, and in front of Era School. "At each location, the water flows continuously when the line is opened for two hours. Multiply that by four, and you'll understand the scale of wastage."
TOI tried to contact officials from the NMC water works department, but they did not respond.
Residents claim they informed the water works department soon after the problem was noticed, but their complaints were ignored. "I even spoke to the supervisor and other officials. They acknowledged the problem but took no action," said Tighare.
Tighare, who visited the site after receiving multiple distress calls, said, "This is inexcusable. In an area where people struggle daily to get drinking water, thousands of litres of is going waste because of negligence.

It's a crime against the people."
Following his inspection, Tighare approached zonal offices. "NMC's water work department officials admitted the matter was brought to the supervisor's notice earlier, but no action was taken. The concerned officer then issued orders to shut the water supply line completely until repairs are carried out," Tighare said.
In the meantime, residents are living in appalling conditions.
Ground floors have turned into swampy zones. "We're told to save water, but our homes are flooded with it. And when we request tankers during actual shortages, we're asked to wait for days," said a resident.
