Uzbek woman's dark trail: Forged Aadhaar, fake marriage; Lucknow's shadow network uncovered
LUCKNOW: A 48-year-old Uzbek woman, Lola Kayumova, accused of involvement in
human trafficking
and sex work, had reportedly been staying illegally in Lucknow for more than seven years. Although official records list her as married to local resident Janak Pratap Singh, he has denied being her husband.
The certificate, issued by a Lucknow court in March 2019, states that Lola and Janak were married on 30 January 2019 at IIMRT Business School, Vipul Khand 6. It lists Janak (38), son of Ayodhya Pratap Singh and Maharaja Devi, as Lola's husband.
However, Janak told TOI over the phone, 'I'm not married to Lola, though I know her for long time. The document of marriage certificate is forged.'
When TOI visited Janak's residence in Tulsi Vihar Colony, Rajajipuram, the house was found empty.
A neighbour, who wished to remain unnamed, said, 'Janak's mother and his brother left to undisclosed location abruptly on Tuesday morning.'
Lola's Aadhaar card, issued on 1 August 2021 and updated on 21 April 2025, also lists Janak as her spouse. The address on the card is Orchid B, Omaxe R1, near the UP Police headquarters. She previously lived at Ambrosia D, Omaxe Residency 2.
Anoop Kumar Srivastava, owner of the Ambrosia D flat, said, 'Janak had introduced himself as house agent to assist Lola in getting a rented flat.

She used to pay Rs 17,500 per month. However, within six months I had to ask Loka to vacate the flat, as I was informed that large number of people were visiting the flat in late night hours.
Secondly, there was poor communication between us. She spoke language which was difficult for us to understand.'
Uzbekistan had reportedly issued an Interpol notice against Lola, but the grounds remain unclear pending her arrest. She was last spotted near Mayur Vihar, New Delhi.
Officials confirmed she remains at large.
Sources revealed that Lola was also connected to Thrijin Raj (alias Arjun Rana), who falsely posed as a journalist. Police have charged Thrijin and Dr Vivek Gupta under various laws including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Registration of Foreigners Act, the Foreigners Act, and the Immigration and Foreigner Act. Dr Gupta is currently untraceable.
According to sources, Lola lured vulnerable Uzbek women to India with false promises of employment. Once they arrived, their travel documents were seized. Thrijin allegedly helped them acquire fake Indian identification, while Dr Gupta reportedly performed cosmetic surgeries to make the women appear Indian. They were then forced into prostitution.
Two rescued Uzbek nationals, Holida and Nilofar, told authorities that several foreign women were brought to India through Lola's network, with many undergoing surgeries at Dr Gupta's clinic.

Akali leader Majithia arrested in Rs 540 crore drug money laundering case after SIT probe
CHANDIGARH: Senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who is the brother-in-law of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal, was arrested on Tuesday by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau after a raid at his residence in Amritsar. He has been booked on allegations of laundering more than Rs 540 crore in drug money through various means. According to vigilance officials, investigations by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing FIR No. 02 of 2021, registered at the Punjab State Crime Police Station, reveal large-scale laundering of drug money allegedly facilitated by Majithia. Preliminary findings indicate that over Rs 540 crore was laundered through multiple channels. These include the deposit of Rs 161 crore of unaccounted cash into bank accounts of companies controlled by Majithia, channeling of Rs 141 crore through suspected foreign entities, excess deposits of Rs 236 crore without disclosure in company financial statements, and acquisition of movable and immovable assets without any legitimate source of income. A spokesperson for the Punjab Vigilance Bureau stated that the case was registered based on a SIT report investigating the FIR dated 20-12-2021 under Sections 25, 27-A and 29 of the NDPS Act, 1985. The report provided substantial evidence indicating that the laundered money was routed into Saraya Industries and allegedly facilitated by Majithia. 'So far, Rs 540 crore of drug money has been tracked as being illegally generated and laundered using Majithia's influence as a public servant while being an MLA and holding a cabinet post in the erstwhile Punjab government,' the spokesperson added. The spokesperson also noted that Majithia's assets, both immovable and movable, registered in his and his wife Genieve Kaur Majithia's names, have significantly increased, with no legitimate income source to justify them.

Allegations of bribery, cheating: why Lilavati Hospital Trust and and head of HDFC Bank are locked in high-profile legal and police battle
The trust that runs Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital has accused the head of HDFC Bank of accepting a bribe of more than Rs 2 crore to help a group of individuals retain illegal control over the trust. The allegation has provoked litigation in magistrate courts and the Bombay High Court, and FIRs have been filed against HDFC Bank managing director and chief executive Sashidhar Jagdishan, a former Lilavati trustee named Chetan Mehta, and several others. In April, the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust (LKMM Trust), which oversees the hospital in Bandra (West), applied to the judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) asking for an investigation against Jagdishan. The Trust claimed that in 2022, then trustee Chetan Mehta and six others including former office bearers of the Trust, had paid Jagdishan Rs 2.05 crore to harass Founder Permanent Trustee for Life Kishor Mehta, against whom the bank had initiated loan recovery proceedings. Kishor Mehta, who passed away in 2024, was director of Splendour Gems Ltd, earlier known as Beautiful Diamonds Ltd. The company had been provided loans by a consortium of banks including HDFC Bank in 1995. Recovery proceedings were initiated in 2002, and in 2004, the Debts Recovery Tribunal, Mumbai, allowed an application by HDFC and ordered the payment of Rs 14.74 crore along with interest at 16% per annum. In its application filed through Permanent Trustee Prashant Mehta, the son of Kishor Mehta, the Trust alleged that the latter's death last year was because of physical and mental harassment arising out of the loan recovery process. According to the complaint, after assuming office, Prashant Mehta found a diary showing that between March and June 2022, sums adding up to Rs 2.05 crore were transferred to Jagdishan on the directions of Chetan Mehta, who was a trustee at the time. On May 29, the court directed police to register offences punishable under sections 406, 409 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (IPC) and investigate the matter. The 'amount involved is high', and the allegations constitute cognisable offences, and an investigation was necessary, the magistrate observed. Two days later, Bandra Police registered an FIR against Jagdishan, Chetan Mehta, and six others. A separate FIR was registered against Chetan Mehta, M/s Phoenix ARC Private Ltd, and others for alleged embezzlement of Trust funds to the tune of Rs 2.25 crore. What are the proceedings pending before the courts? * Aggrieved by the police action, Jagdishan filed a petition before the Bombay High Court last week asking for the May 29 order to be set aside and for the FIR to be quashed. He sought a stay on the investigation during the pendency of the plea, and asked that there should be no coercive action against him. * Separately, Phoenix ARC and accused Keki Elavia and Venkatu Srinivasan have moved the HC asking for the embezzlement FIR against them to be quashed. * On its part, the Trust, through Prashant Mehta, has filed a defamation suit in the High Court against HDFC Bank, its spokesperson, and Jagdishan, accusing the bank of running a 'deliberate and sustained smear campaign' against the Trust. * Separately, it has filed a criminal defamation complaint before the magistrate court in Girgaon under sections 356(1) (defamation) and 357 (breach of contract) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The magistrate has issued notices to the bank, Jagdishan, and others, and will hear the matter on July 18. * The Trust has also filed a plea in the HC seeking a transfer of the probe against the bank and Jagdishan to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). What have Jagdishan and HDFC Bank contended? Jagdishan, who became MD and CEO in 2020, has told the HC that the FIR against him was a 'retaliatory move' after the bank began recovery proceedings against Splendour Gems Ltd, a company owned by the Mehta family, which had defaulted on loans amounting to Rs 65.22 crore as of May 31. It has been alleged that the complainant Prashant Mehta was misusing the 'facade of Lilavati Trust' to target Jagdishan. Jagdishan has submitted that the 'sole reliance on a xerox copy of selective cash records renders the allegations highly suspect', and the 'diary's inherent lack of credibility', coupled with the complainant's failure to produce other cogent evidence or witnesses, 'strips the allegations of merit and credibility'. The May 29 order of the magistrate court was 'flawed, self contradictory and deplorable', he has argued.

UDAIPUR: A 28-year-old man accused of raping a French woman in Udaipur was arrested on Wednesday from his house in Chittorgarh over 100km away, police said. The 30-year-old rape survivor was in Udaipur for the same shoot. According to the first information report (FIR) registered on the woman's complaint, she arrived in Udaipur on June 22 and was at a cafe with her friends on June 23 (Monday evening) when Ojha allegedly approached her. They stepped out for a smoke and later went for a drive. But instead of dropping her at the hotel, he took her home where he allegedly raped her. According to the FIR, the accused dropped her off at the hotel at 6am on Tuesday. Udaipur superintendent of police (SP) Yogesh Goyal said the accused fled Udaipur on Tuesday morning after he allegedly raped the woman on Monday night. 'Prima facie, the victim had been working for several Indian brands as a background dancer and actor for a long time. She came to Udaipur on Sunday to shoot for a leading electronics brand. Siddharth was part of the same crew,' he added. As he was being taken away by the police, Ojha insisted that he was being framed. 'I didn't rape her… It's a conspiracy that has been hatched against me by some industry people as I am an outsider. I was going to surrender only when the police picked me up today,' he said. Badgaon police station house officer (SHO) Pooran Singh said the FIR was registered under Section 64 (1) (rape) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on the woman's complaint after she reached the hotel. 'She told her two friends about the incident. As she fell sick, they rushed her to a private hospital in the city and approached the police who filed a complaint based on the woman's primary statement,' Singh said.
