When he visited the bank on Monday, officials confirmed the unusual credit but informed him that the account had been immediately frozen.
A shocking incident from Dankaur, Greater Noida, has left authorities puzzled. A 19-year-old youth, Deepak alias Deepu, discovered that more than Rs 1.13 lakh crore had been credited to his dead mother's Kotak Mahindra Bank account. His mother, Gayatri Devi, passed away two months ago, but Deepak had continued operating the account.
On Sunday night (August 3), he received a message showing an astronomical credit of Rs 10,01,35,60,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,23,56,00,00,00,00,299. Shocked, he shared the message with friends and asked them to count the zeros in disbelief.

When he visited the bank on Monday, officials confirmed the unusual credit but informed him that the account had been immediately frozen. The Kotak Mahindra Bank team reported the matter to the Income Tax Department for investigation.
Youth Turns Off Phone After Calls Flood In
The Income Tax Department has launched an inquiry into the mysterious transaction. Officials are trying to find out how such an extraordinary amount was credited to an account belonging to a deceased person.
Authorities suspect it could be a banking error, a technical glitch, or possibly linked to money laundering. A detailed audit of the transaction trail is being carried out.
Bank officials have also started a parallel review to ensure no internal system failure caused the incident. The exact origin of the funds will only be known after the investigation is completed.
Local Buzz and Social Media Reactions
The incident quickly became a topic of conversation in Dankaur and on social media. Some users joked about 'instant billionaires," while others raised concerns about cybersecurity and banking safety.
For Deepak, however, the experience has been overwhelming rather than joyous. With the account frozen and an investigation underway, he now waits for clarity on how such a massive sum appeared overnight.
A Funny Calculation
Amid the craze, an X user calculated how much each Indian would get if the money is divided among the whole country's population.
'Total rashi: 1,13,56,000 करोड़ रुपये = 1,13,56,00,00,00,00,000 रुपये. India ki population: 2025 ke hisaab se, India ki population lagbhag 140 crore (1,400,000,000) log hai, based on recent estimates," he said.
Chalo, bhai, yeh bhi calculate karte hain!Diya hua data:Total rashi: 1,13,56,000 करोड़ रुपये = 1,13,56,00,00,00,00,000 रुपयेIndia ki population: 2025 ke hisaab se, India ki population lagbhag 140 crore (1,400,000,000) log hai, based on recent estimates.Step 1: Har ek ke— MD RASHID (@MDRASHI08328411) August 4, 2025
Then, he did a step by step calculation of the same, 'Total rashi ko population se divide karte hain: 1,13,56,00,00,00,00,000 ÷ 1,40,00,00,000
Yeh simplify karte hain: 1,13,56,00,00,00,00,000 ÷ 1,40,00,00,000 = 1,13,56,00,00,000 ÷ 1,40
Ab isko calculate karte hain: 1,13,56,00,00,000 ÷ 140 ≈ 81,11,42,857.14"
Lastly, he concluded announcing each person's share, 'Jawaab: Agar yeh rashi pure Hindustan ke logon (140 crore) mein barabar baant di jaye, toh har ek ke hisse mein lagbhag 81 crore 11 lakh rupees aayenge! Yeh toh ek banda crore-pati ban jayega."

Police Case Filed Against BJP MP, 2 Others After Driver Dies By Suicide In Karnataka

Bengaluru: A police case has been filed against BJP MP K Sudhakar and two others after a 30-year-old man, who worked as a driver, named them in a note before he died by suicide in Karnataka's Chikkaballapur. The driver, M Babu, died by suicide on Thursday morning, following which his wife, Shilpa, filed a police complaint based on the note he left behind. The first information report (FIR) charged Mr Sudhakar and two others, Nagesh and Manjunath, with financial fraud, abetment to suicide and atrocity under the BNS and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. In the note, Babu alleged Mr Sudhakar and Nagesh cheated him of Rs 25 lakh by promising him a job. He also accused a zilla parisha accounts assistant of pushing him to die by suicide. The police said Babu had been working as a contract driver for the chief accounts officer in the zilla panchayat for over six years. "A suicide was reported at Chikkaballapura DC office premises. We received information at around 8.30 am that someone had died by hanging from a tree," Superintendent of Police Kushal Chouksey told news agency PTI. Babu alleged Nagesh and the accounts assistant "cheated him of several lakhs of rupees", claiming they could help him secure a government job "using the MP's influence". "These are serious allegations. A thorough investigation will determine whether the MP was directly involved or if his name was misused. We are examining all angles," the officer said. In the FIR, Mr Sudhakar has been named as accused 1, Nagesh as accused 2 and Manjunatha as accused 3. Earlier in the day, Mr Sudhakar told reporters in Delhi that he was "deeply pained" by the death but denied any connection to the tragedy. "I heard about the suicide at the DC office in Chikkaballapura. It has deeply saddened me. I offer my condolences to the family. I have never seen or met this person, Babu, in my public life," Mr Sudhakar said. The MP, a former minister and three-time MLA, said he helped many young people secure employment and did not understand why his name was mentioned in the note. "I have no information about the other two individuals named in the note. I've heard that Nagesh and Manjunath allegedly promised Babu a job and took Rs 10-15 lakh from him. I don't know them personally," the BJP MP said.

More tariffs For the U.S. President, friendship with India seems to be substantially different from his presidential decisions (Front page, August 7). For all the bonhomie with New Delhi, the U.S. continues to treat India as a secondary power. India may have to accept that Mr. Trump will arm-twist countries to force them to fall in line with his policies. If New Delhi can get the tariff hike postponed it would give it elbow room to manoeuvre. A.V. Narayanan, Chennai Is the U.S. trying to derail India's economic standing? Mere expressions of verbal protest are not enough. The Government of India must respond firmly and decisively. Continued silence could have severe consequences, particularly for Indian businesses. Gulam Rabbani, Bajpatti, Sitamarhi, Bihar While India and the U.S. share a strategic partnership built on mutual respect and shared values, this sort of punitive trade action risks prioritising business interests over the spirit of friendship. The U.S. should choose dialogue that honours both economic realities and the deepening bond between the two nations. Anush D'Cunha S.J., Thiruvananthapuram Nature's warning The 'cloudburst' that wreaked havoc in Uttarkashi's Dharali and Sukhi Top areas is a reminder of the Himalayan region's vulnerability to extreme weather events. The message is clear. The region desperately needs transformation, from reactive responses to proactive resilience building. Only through such an approach can we protect the Himalayan communities while also preserving this ecosystem for future generations. R. Sivakumar, Chennai Deletions, gender disparity How can the Election Commission of India (ECI) ensure free and fair elections in Bihar when there are major issues with deletions and omissions in the electoral rolls? The ECI finds itself in a catch-22 situation. Its actions, once unquestionable, are being questioned by the Opposition and the judiciary. It will be a disaster if the ECI's responses to the Supreme Court's candid observations are not met with concrete replies, evidence and action (Data point, August 7). Balasubramaniam Pavani, Secunderabad On the tomato I write this letter as former Director, Regional Institute of Ophthalmology and Government Ophthalmic Hospital, Chennai. The article, 'The virtues of tomato, a healthy vegetable' ('Science' page, July 27), was descriptive in terms of the health benefits of consuming tomatoes. But as a health-care provider, it is my duty to issue caution against some negative factors in this angel vegetable. Consumption in excess can lead to side-effects in certain individuals. These include acid reflux, allergies, digestive issues and potential kidney problems due to high potassium content. Being rich in calcium and oxalates, the tomato can induce kidney stone formation. The tomato is a nutritious gift from mother nature, but moderation is the key for good health. Dr. M.V.S. Prakash, Chennai

Mending ties: On state visit of Philippines President to India

The state visit of Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to India that ends on Friday (August 8, 2025), and his meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi provided a hard power edge to the two countries, with historical-cultural ties between them, by signing a Strategic Partnership Agreement. On his first visit to India since taking office in 2022, Mr. Marcos has taken a strong position against Chinese incursions in the West Philippine Sea, and has been keen to engage India more closely. Coinciding with his visit, the Indian Navy held its first joint maritime exercises with the Philippine Navy in the South China Sea area. The drills were criticised by China. India has consistently supported the 2016 UNCLOS tribunal arbitration award in favour of the Philippines, calling on China to respect the multilateral order in the Indo-Pacific, and Mr. Marcos appreciated this. Moreover, while India has signed dozens of such Partnership Agreements worldwide, for the Philippines, India is only its fifth Strategic Partner — after Japan, Vietnam, Australia, and South Korea. The Philippines is also the first export destination for the BrahMos missile, and Mr. Marcos is understood to have expressed interest in buying more Indian military hardware. The two sides signed agreements to enhance strategic cooperation, including an exchange of Terms of Reference for all three services and the Coast Guard. They also agreed to free up visas and begin direct flights. There is no substantial bilateral trade at present — $3.3 billion in 2024-25 — but investments are growing as technology and pharma companies have tied up in many areas. The Marcos-Modi meetings sent out a more comprehensive message for India's ties with South East Asia. The Philippines is the incoming chair for ASEAN in 2026, and the coordinator for the ASEAN-India comprehensive strategic partnership. The invitation to Mr. Marcos was also a way of easing relations that have been riled by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal's unnecessarily abrasive remarks in June, where he called many ASEAN countries the 'B-team of China', and mocked the 2009 ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA). The government has since moved to fast-track talks to revise the AITIGA, with talks in Delhi next week. India and the Philippines have separately discussed launching talks for a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), indicating India's intention to keep negotiating for a more liberalised trade regime globally even as it faces the brunt of the U.S.'s tariffs and penalties. The visit is a reminder that India's interest in peace and security in the Indo-Pacific is not restricted to the Quad grouping, and that it is mindful of strengthening ties with all the countries in the region, especially as it essays the current geopolitical turbulence with bigger global powers.
