TASTE TEST: A McElhenney and Cheese at Wrexham's 'The Bank'

Leader Live03-05-2025

The Bank is a 'small plates' restaurant based at 43 High Street, right in the heart of Wrexham's city centre.
Established in 2009, it specialises in serving tapas, cocktails and wine.
And 'small plates' it may be on paper, but my visit there certainly left me feeling full and satisfied.
I took a lunchtime trip to The Bank which, during Easter weekend, received a visit from Wrexham AFC co-chairman Rob McElhenney.
Just days before the Reds were promoted to the EFL Championship, Rob visited the venue and approved of one of its dishes being named after him (We'll come to that in the minute!).
I visited earlier this week, on a day where it was absolutely scorching in Wrexham.
The Bank's website states that it is a 'beautifully renovated building' and it's hard to argue with that as, as soon as I entered it, it left me feeling impressed.
It was a 'table for one' for this reporter on his lunch break and I opted for the very value-for-money 'three small plates for £18' deal.
From a vast menu of delicious-sounding tapas options, I chose the Hot honey belly pork, the truffle fries and the McElhenney and Cheese!
The pork was cooked wonderfully and fell apart nicely. The mustard glaze mixed well with the meat, as well as the spring greens it accompanied.

The truffle fries were a treat too, with the Grana Padano adding some extra flavour to the already mouth-watering truffle-ness.
Finally, the 'McElhenney N' Cheese', named in tribute to Wrexham's co-chairman, was also a delight, it was a perfect side dish to accompany the other duo which I ordered.
It contained Welsh rarebit, a herb crust and a dash of Abergele whiskey which gave it an unusual but nevertheless outstanding taste.
As for drinks, I simply had a coke (and a jug of water as it was 23 degrees outside!).
But, I did spot that the bar does offer some top options on tap for anyone looking to enjoy a good beer there - including Leffe, Camden Ale and, of course, Wrexham Lager.
Looking at the board in the venue, The Bank also does a 'Wine Club Wednesday', offering three plates and a glass of wine for the reasonable price of £22.
The interior itself was lively, with just the one table free when I walked in, perhaps proving The Bank's deserved popularity. But having said that, it was still quiet enough for you to enjoy a meal in peace too.
TOP STORIES
The overall experience I had at The Bank was thoroughly enjoyable and the dishes I was served were superb.
I paid just £21.50 for the pleasure of those three plates (and the pint of coke) that, although regarded as 'small plates', left me feeling full for the rest of the day.
I will certainly be returning to what is, in my opinion, a real gem in the heart of Wrexham.

HMS Dragon sailors set to come to Wrexham this week

Friday (June 13), will see crew members of the Royal Navy vessell celebrate their Freedom of the City for the first time, after they were granted the honour last December. In doing so, HMS Dragon joined Wrexham Football Club, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the Royal Welsh (formerly the Royal Welch Fusiliers), North Wales Police double Olympic gold medal-winning rower Tom James and former Prime Minister David Lloyd George among those honoured with the Freedom of the County Borough. The sailors will arrive onto Llwyn Isaf green (outside the Guildhall) at 10.40am, before marching through the city centre. The ship is the first since the Second World War to be affiliated with Wrexham, and the partnership was sealed at a ceremony in Portsmouth back in April 2024. TOP STORIES TODAY The ship is one of the Royal Navy's advanced Type 45 air defence destroyers, and is instantly recognisable with her roaring Welsh Dragons emblazoned across her bows. North Wales Police have warned that there will likely be 'disruption' to parking in the city centre during the event on Friday. There will be a small number of road closures for a short period as a result, and access into and out of the Library and Waterworld car parks will be limited. Further details including timings and locations will be published later this week.

Gary Neville issues Liverpool transfer verdict including Florian Wirtz surprise

Liverpool have already secured the signings of Jeremie Frimpong and Armin Pecsi this summer, with the duo joining the club's under-21 setup, but are set to add more to their squad Gary Neville has praised Liverpool's recent work in the transfer window, but admitted he's surprised by their persistent pursuit of Florian Wirtz. The Premier League champions have already signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and young goalkeeper Armin Pecsi, who is expected to join the Reds' under-21 squad. ‌ Liverpool's summer spree doesn't stop there; they're on the verge of welcoming Wirtz and Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez, with the German attacker poised to set a record as both Liverpool's most expensive ever signing and potentially the priciest player in the history of British football. ‌ The Reds have reportedly made an offer totalling £113million for the Leverkusen ace, who, despite his current club's £125m valuation, seems eager to join the Merseyside club. Neville discussed Liverpool's summer signings on the It's Called Soccer podcast, applauding the club for potentially nailing down three significant deals surprisingly early, and he spoke glowingly of the possible acquisition of Wirtz. " Liverpool won the league four or five weeks ago, so they can start having their recruitment meetings very early," said the ex-Manchester United captain. "I know all clubs do but to involve your manager while you're going for a Premier League title is quite tough so once they've won the title they can be so focused. Wirtz would be a sensational signing. I think when you're talking about winning the league what is it that improves you? "The only thing that will improve you when you win the league is signing world-class players or players who have the potential to be world-class, so signing Wirtz is fantastic." ‌ He conceded that while he anticipates shrewd dealings from Liverpool in the transfer market, the sum they're willing to spend on Wirtz did catch him off guard. "[Jeremie] Frimpong and there's talks of [Milos] Kerkez, deals with their right and left backs situations so to get those three done if they were to get [them] done quite quickly would be smart business but I wouldn't have expected anything else from Liverpool," he continued. ‌ "Maybe slightly surprised they've gone so heavy in on Wirtz in terms of the fee, they don't normally go that big but [Arne] Slot deserves it by the way. "He waited 12 months for a player to sign, [they] signed [Federico] Chiesa for very little money. So I think they have two years of money tanked up and banked up plus they have all the income guaranteed from next season with the Champions League so I think supporting the manager is the right and only thing to do."

Florian Wirtz Liverpool transfer details as fourth bid made and debut given

Florian Wirtz played 'his last match as a Bayer Leverkusen player' on Sunday according to reports in his homeland, and he is soon expected to complete his move to Liverpool Florian Wirtz continues to close in on his record move to Liverpool - but in Germany they are considering the transfer to be as good as done. Wirtz played the full 90 minutes in Stuttgart as Germany lost the UEFA Nations League third-place playoff 2-0 to France on Sunday, with German publication Bild claiming that both the Reds and Bayer Leverkusen 'must have breathed a sigh of relief' that the 22-year-old came through the match unscathed. ‌ That is because Leverkusen are now counting on the deal to be done almost as much as Liverpool are, with the Bundesliga club now waiting on the final offer from the Reds following intense but amicable negotiations. ‌ Liverpool will offer around £118million for Wirtz, making him the most expensive player ever signed by a British club. The deal will comprise of a fixed fee upfront said to be over £100m, with the rest in a mixture of bonus payments. The offer still falls sort of the £126m that Bayer had been seeking for the outstanding player in the Bundesliga for the last two seasons, but an agreement between the clubs is widely expected to be reached. Bild add that Wirtz will sign a five-year contract at Anfield to tie him to the club until 2030, and following the completion of the formalities of the deal he will then head off on holiday as a Liverpool player. The German publication then go even further and claim that Wirtz will report for pre-season training with Liverpool on July 7, before making his debut for the Reds in the pre-season friendly against Preston North End at Deepdale on July 13. However that isn't set in stone, and it may well be that Reds boss Arne Slot opts to bring his players back for the new season gradually depending on how much international football they have played over the summer. ‌ Wirtz played the full 180 minutes of Germany's Nations League matches against Portugal and France, and so he is likely to be slowly introduced to his new club by the Dutchman. After Preston, Liverpool's only other friendly matches currently scheduled are against AC Milan on July 26 and Yokohama F Marinos on July 30, both on the club's pre-season tour of Japan. Wirtz is expected to be on the tour, and Liverpool could end up scheduling a European pre-season training camp before the Japan trip as in previous summers.
