TASTE TEST: A McElhenney and Cheese at Wrexham's 'The Bank'

TASTE TEST: A McElhenney and Cheese at Wrexham's 'The Bank'

Leader Live03-05-2025

The Bank is a 'small plates' restaurant based at 43 High Street, right in the heart of Wrexham's city centre.
Established in 2009, it specialises in serving tapas, cocktails and wine.
And 'small plates' it may be on paper, but my visit there certainly left me feeling full and satisfied.
I took a lunchtime trip to The Bank which, during Easter weekend, received a visit from Wrexham AFC co-chairman Rob McElhenney.
Just days before the Reds were promoted to the EFL Championship, Rob visited the venue and approved of one of its dishes being named after him (We'll come to that in the minute!).
I visited earlier this week, on a day where it was absolutely scorching in Wrexham.
The Bank's website states that it is a 'beautifully renovated building' and it's hard to argue with that as, as soon as I entered it, it left me feeling impressed.
It was a 'table for one' for this reporter on his lunch break and I opted for the very value-for-money 'three small plates for £18' deal.
From a vast menu of delicious-sounding tapas options, I chose the Hot honey belly pork, the truffle fries and the McElhenney and Cheese!
The pork was cooked wonderfully and fell apart nicely. The mustard glaze mixed well with the meat, as well as the spring greens it accompanied.

The truffle fries were a treat too, with the Grana Padano adding some extra flavour to the already mouth-watering truffle-ness.
Finally, the 'McElhenney N' Cheese', named in tribute to Wrexham's co-chairman, was also a delight, it was a perfect side dish to accompany the other duo which I ordered.
It contained Welsh rarebit, a herb crust and a dash of Abergele whiskey which gave it an unusual but nevertheless outstanding taste.
As for drinks, I simply had a coke (and a jug of water as it was 23 degrees outside!).
But, I did spot that the bar does offer some top options on tap for anyone looking to enjoy a good beer there - including Leffe, Camden Ale and, of course, Wrexham Lager.
Looking at the board in the venue, The Bank also does a 'Wine Club Wednesday', offering three plates and a glass of wine for the reasonable price of £22.
The interior itself was lively, with just the one table free when I walked in, perhaps proving The Bank's deserved popularity. But having said that, it was still quiet enough for you to enjoy a meal in peace too.
TOP STORIES
The overall experience I had at The Bank was thoroughly enjoyable and the dishes I was served were superb.
I paid just £21.50 for the pleasure of those three plates (and the pint of coke) that, although regarded as 'small plates', left me feeling full for the rest of the day.
I will certainly be returning to what is, in my opinion, a real gem in the heart of Wrexham.

It's worth comparing defence spending of the UK and non-Nato countries

In 2024 the UK spent $82 billion on defence at 2.3% of GDP whereas the Republic of Ireland next door spent $1.5bn, or 0.25% of GDP. Switzerland, which potentially lies in the immediate path of the invading eastern hordes, spent $6.7bn or 0.7% of GDP on defence last year. Mind you, the Germans and the Russians stayed well clear of Switzerland last time, funny that. READ MORE: Scottish Government criticised over arms firms funding review Are we to assume that these countries will also eventually be expected to funnel 5% of their GDP into the coffers of the military-industrial complex to keep the Reds at bay? Maybe they will deal with all the casualties caused by the inevitable nuclear strike on Coulport, since there will be no NHS left by then if funding is diverted to defence. David J Crawford Glasgow

Inside Florian Wirtz transfer and what Liverpool must do next to seal huge deal

Liverpool are closing in on a deal for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz but there are still issues which need to be resolved to get it over the line Florian Wirtz to Liverpool is now down to the details and that means there should be a signature soon. But it's not done yet and what needs to be done to get it over the line is around the add-ons Bayer Leverkusen want, how the deal is structured and, like most modern transfers, the payment plan. Liverpool have committed to pay £100m guaranteed. That is a huge figure and more than the club has ever paid for a single player even including add-ons. ‌ That shows the belief within Anfield for the ability of the Germany international both now and in the future with those who have watched him intently sure there's still huge scope for improvement for a player who had 30 goal contributions last season. ‌ Wirtz, 22, wants only to move to Merseyside and, when a player is intent on joining one club, it means a deal will invariably get done because it suits all parties. But Bayer Leverkusen are standing firm on what they believe the player is worth and on the other side Liverpool have a value in their own head. The Reds are, at this stage, unwilling to match the £127m (€150m) that the Bundesliga club want the total package to be. Speculation on Tuesday night that Liverpool had agreed to such a number is understood to be wide of the mark, certainly at this stage. That's why the talks are ongoing. There has been consistent dialogue between the two clubs since last week when the Reds tabled an offer worth around £114m. That was just shy of the £115m which Chelsea paid Brighton for Moises Caicedo in 2023. Liverpool also agreed to pay Brighton £111m for Caicedo in the same summer but the player opted for Stamford Bridge. So the offer for Wirtz was the most Liverpool have ever offered for a single player in their history and it will smash their transfer record of £85m (including add-ons) for Darwin Nunez, who they signed from Benfica in 2022. It was stressed earlier this week that Leverkusen did not reject the £114m total bid last week but they have also not accepted it. The finer details of that include what Wirtz and Liverpool must achieve during the course of his contract at Liverpool to trigger the payments over £100m are still being discussed, as well as the total figure. So there's still a chance that the Reds may have to break the British transfer record to get the deal done. ‌ The £100m will be guaranteed but, like any modern deal, will be paid in instalments over a number of years while the add-ons will then be paid as and when they are triggered. It's a complex and complicated deal but nothing out of the ordinary for a player so highly-sought after and a financial package so eye-watering everything must be perfect on both sides before contracts are signed. Liverpool and Leverkusen must now find common ground on those add-ons to get it over the line. Sources on either side are not going to divulge their 'final figure' for fear of showing their hand. There's no rush on either side to get it done. Both want it right and Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes continues to work with his counterpart in Leverkusen, Simon Rolfes. The transfer window is now closed again until next week but deals can still be agreed and medicals done. Liverpool would prefer to get Wirtz over the line so he can enjoy his break without the need to return for medical checks and contract signings before reporting for pre-season in early July. But a private jet flight to Merseyside is not going to be too much of a bother for a player who has turned down Manchester City and Bayern Munich to move to Merseyside. The Wirtz deal getting done is certainly a case of when and not if now.

Jeremie Frimpong gets Liverpool fans excited by posting Florian Wirtz footage

Liverpool are still trying to thrash out a club-record transfer to bring Florian Wirtz to Anfield and Reds new boy Jeremie Frimpong has now set tongues wagging among fans Liverpool new boy Jeremie Frimpong has sparked a frenzy among Reds supporters by sharing footage of him and Florian Wirtz linking up for Bayer Leverkusen as talks over a blockbuster transfer for the Germany star continue. Frimpong, 24, became Liverpool 's first summer signing earlier this month after the newly minted Premier League champions triggered a £30million release clause in his contract. And Wirtz, 22, is seemingly poised to follow him after setting his heart on a switch to Anfield. ‌ Negotiations over what would be a British record transfer have been ongoing in recent weeks with Liverpool now the red-hot favourites to land the sought-after attacking midfielder. ‌ And with talks now at an advanced stage, fans have flocked to social media after Frimpong posted a clip of him setting Wirtz up for a goal in a Bayer Leverkusen shirt. One social media reshared the clip, saying: "Cannot wait to see what these lads cook up next season." Another social media user dubbed the right-back as "agent Frimpong", while another said: "Frimpong posting comps with Wirtz in. He knows." A well known Liverpool account added: "Frimpong on his Instagram. Looks like he's just as excited to see Wirtz at Liverpool as us," complete with the eyes emoji. Like Frimpong, Wirtz has caught the eye at Leverkusen over the last couple of years and is now widely regarded as one of Europe's most exciting talents. His capture would be regarded as a major coup for Liverpool, who are determined to build on their success in the Premier League under Arne Slot with a strong summer transfer window. ‌ Leverkusen are understood to value Wirtz at a monstrous €150m (£127m). A deal is likely to be made for a lower amount, though, with Liverpool offering €134m (£113m) to their Bundesliga counterparts last week. A breakthrough is expected soon with Wirtz making it clear he only desires a move to Liverpool despite rival interest from Bayern Munich. ‌ The Reds are offering a guaranteed £100m for Wirtz, with the total package now likely to exceed the £115m that Chelsea paid to acquire Moises Caicedo, the former Brighton midfielder who was also linked with Liverpool at the time. Talks regarding a deal for Milos Kerkez, the Bournemouth left-back, are also ongoing.
