Galaxy Z Fold7/Flip7, Watch8 series, OnePlus Nord 5/CE5 official, Week 28 in review

GSM Arenaa day ago
Samsung made the biggest splash this week with the unveiling of its new foldables and watches. The Galaxy Z Fold7 is the thinnest and lightest in the series, has the 200MP main camera of the Galaxy S25 Ultra, and finally brings a 21:9 cover display. The Galaxy Z Flip7 also brings a bigger cover screen at 4.1 inches. Both are now up for pre-order.
The Galaxy Watch8 and Watch8 Classic both ditch the round design for a squircle one. Both pack the same Exynos W1000 3nm SoC as the previous generation. The Galaxy Watch8 Classic has a smaller display than the Watch6 Classic, but adds the Galaxy Watch Ultra's Action button.
Fold7 is bigger, lighter and now comes with a flagship main camera.
Both watches use the "cushion" design that we saw on the Watch Ultra. Speaking of, there is no new Watch Ultra, only a new color for the original model.
It will be among the few upgrades compared to its predecessor.
Three new Galaxy foldables - possibly four if the tri-fold rumors are true - plus three new Galaxy watches are coming this Wednesday.
Onelus announced the Nord 5 and Nord CE5 this week. The Nord 5 has a massive 6,800mAh battery and a big 6.83-inch 144Hz AMOLED panel. It runs on a Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 with up to 12GB of RAM. The Nord CE5 has a 6.77-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, a Dimensity 8350 chipset, and an even bigger 7,100mAh battery. Both phones are now on sale
The Moto G96 also debuted with a 6.67-inch 144Hz OLED display, a Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 SoC, and a 5,500mAh battery. It's going on sale in India on July 16.
Nord CE5 brings the biggest battery ever fitted on a OnePlus phone.
Open sales in India are set to kick off on July 16.
Both feature six-core CPUs.
In the meantime, we unboxed the Tecno Spark 40 Pro+ and Nothing Phone (3) - check those out below!
Thin-and-lights are coming from everywhere.
Nothing struck a nice balance between different and functional.
It looks just like its predecessor.

There won't be a Samsung Galaxy S26+, new report claims

This year Samsung launched the Galaxy S25, S25+, and S25 Ultra in January and then the S25 Edge in May. Next year, the family (if we disregard the FE model) will only be made up of three members, according to a new report from Samsung's home of South Korea. So, expect to see the 6.27-inch Galaxy S26, the 6.66-inch Galaxy S26 Edge, and the 6.89-inch Galaxy S26 Ultra. That's right, there won't be a Galaxy S26+, that is, of course, if this report proves to be accurate. We can't say we're very surprised. After all, the Galaxy S25 Edge has the same screen size as the S25+, but it's thinner (with all the compromises arising from that - primarily we're talking one less camera and a far smaller battery). And with Apple long rumored to replace the iPhone 16 Plus with the iPhone 17 Air, Samsung is just following along. We assume that the Plus model of the Galaxy S series has been the lowest-selling one by far (it's the same case for Apple), and so letting it go makes sense, especially as the Edge will actually cater to those who specifically want the in-between screen size. For those who want the biggest screen and the most features, there's always the Ultra, and of course it helps Samsung's bottom line that it's the most expensive of the line - and that the Edge is more expensive than the Plus. Average selling price for the line will definitely go up, even if only by a little. The flip side is that those who really liked what the Plus had to offer and didn't need the extra bells and whistles of the Ultra will now have two flawed options to pick from: the Edge with the same size but slightly more expensive and with a smaller battery and presumably still one less camera, or the Ultra that's much more expensive, and bigger, and heavier. Amazon is now selling the supreme Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra at a $350 discount for all shoppers

You know that gigantic $365 Amazon Prime members were allowed to shave off the list prices of Samsung's Galaxy S25 Ultra in both 256 and 512GB storage variants last week? Well, you can now save... slightly less than that without meeting any special requirements whatsoever. Yes, Amazon is currently selling probably the best Android phone in the world for 350 bucks less than usual with 256 gigs of local digital hoarding room in a single Titanium Whitesilver paint job. And because this is not a Prime Day deal restricted to just a small group of the e-commerce giant's customers, there's clearly a good chance the S25 Ultra will go back up to its regular starting price of $1,299.99 (or at least closer to that mark) very soon. 5G, Unlocked, 256GB Storage, 12GB RAM, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Processor, 6.9-Inch Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X Display with 3120 x 1440 Pixel Resolution and 120Hz Refresh Rate Technology, Corning Gorilla Armor 2 Protection, 200 + 10 + 50 + 50MP Quad Rear-Facing Camera System, 12MP Front-Facing Camera, 5,000mAh Battery with 45W Wired and 15W Wireless Charging Support, Galaxy AI, S Pen Included, Whitesilver Color Buy at Amazon Naturally, $350 is the second-biggest discount offered by a major US retailer on this particular 6.9-inch powerhouse since its commercial debut almost six months ago, and I certainly wouldn't be surprised if Amazon doesn't match (let alone beat) this promotion until Black Friday in November. After all, you're looking at a nearly flawless product here, as highlighted by our comprehensive Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra review. The Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X screen with 120Hz refresh rate technology is a beaut, the titanium build makes the handset an absolute tank, the 200 + 10 + 50 + 50MP quad rear-facing camera system is about as competent and as versatile as it sounds, and the 5,000mAh battery is more than capable of keeping the ultra-high-end phone powered all day (and, if you're frugal, all night) long. At $350 off its normal price, the S25 Ultra (which, by the way, comes with a built-in S Pen as well) is a lot more affordable than Apple's iPhone 16 Pro Max while incredibly also undercutting something like Google's compact Pixel 9 Pro flagship, at least for the time being. While all the early signs are of course pointing at the Galaxy S26 Ultra bringing a bunch of key upgrades to the table in 2026, that's still about six months away... and about 12 months away from rivaling the S25 Ultra in terms of (relative) affordability. Not to mention the possible absence of the aforementioned built-in S Pen. In short, Amazon is making you an offer you simply cannot refuse right now if you happen to be in the market for a super-premium Android smartphone this summer. Report: Chinese Android makers are testing under-display selfie cameras with 3D facial recognition

3D facial recognition hardware is a luxury in today's smartphone market, with Apple being the only major player to offer Face ID on its iPhones persistently. According to a new report, several Chinese smartphone makers are internally testing devices with under-screen cameras and 3D face recognition. The report comes from tipster Digital Chat Station and suggests that we may soon see the first crop of devices with the 'invisible' selfie cameras for biometric authentication. No specific maker or model was mentioned for now. While iPhones have had 3D face recognition for a while, it is still a rarity on Android devices. Honor is one of the only makers to offer the feature, with the Magic7 Pro being the most recent example. We've also seen several Android devices with under-display (UD) selfie cameras, mainly from the ZTE nubia lineup - the Z70S Ultra being one recent example. What we haven't seen yet is a device that has both 3D face scanning and a UD camera, so it would be interesting to see how this tech develops and which brand will release the first device combining both features.
